What does one bring to an actual Crab Rave for thousands of raving crabs? Something like the Sony XV900. Will Dan be impressed by the speaker's statue and booming sound or is this overwhelming hunk of plastic not much more than a status symbol?

If I understand well, the idea for it to support your existing TV setup sounds pretty useful. Main usecase would probably be someone who has a soundbar for their TV, but no subwoofer. With this thing, you get an okay subwoofer, which you can wheel out and use as a sound system when you throw a party in the garden. Any speaker system of this class takes up a lot of room, but if it acts as your subwoofer while you're not throwing a party it becomes a bit more tolerable to have around
@DanielJacksonisbiggerinside
...except that it's not actually a good subwoofer. Or a good party speaker.
@frankcooke1692
@frankcooke1692 Год назад
If you're stuck with a soundbar because you don't have the budget for decent stereo/surround speakers - spending $1000 on a boom-box probably wouldn't be a priority. It's a bit awkwardly sized to use as a sub for a TV. It also comes in at 26kgs - which is awkwardly sized to be portable. You can sort out a 12" sub/amp for your TV for just under a hundred bucks (you don't even need a fancy 2.1 system - just leech the stereo signal via split cables). And same for party speakers. You've seen those big bluetooth units that go for like $60 on Amazon? My friends bring those out to outdoor parties and they're enough to keep 50-60 people happy. There's usually an external battery or generator involved, but even those are pretty cheap.
@MartinRodrigue
@MartinRodrigue Год назад
As a speaker that gets wheeled around for corporate events, I could definitely see this. I've helped organise multiday training camps for new recruits and executives. Having a very nice battery in there for a day long run from guest speakers to mood music during the evening BBQ would've been amazing.

I remember living in an apartment I had just a regular small PC speaker setup with a 6" sub. I lived on the 1st floor and had a little old lady that lived right above me. She knocked on my door one day complaining about a thumping noise coming from below her LOL. I could not believe that little sub traveled that far. I swear it wasn't even 20/100 volume too. Apartments suck.
@Daphoid
@Daphoid Год назад
People always underestimate how well bass frequencies travel. This is precisely why I don't have a sub in my apartment. I've got some 8" studio monitors, but they sit on my desk on isolation stands. They have a pretty full sound stage, but I'm not rocking the floor with every note. I left my "eviction class" subwoofer at home (a 2x12" 900W SVS beast of a unit) for this very reason.

@@scotts1668 The day they filmed this Dan was wearing a Sony T-shirt. Normally you wouldn't have a brand name in a video (people may think it's shady advertisement, the company may not like what you say, it's just easier to not have any brands showing), so you cover them up or hide them. You ever see someone wearing an inside-out shirt in a sponsored video, that's why. But this video is about a Sony product, so they jokingly half-covered the Sony logo on his shirt, then wrote the product's brand name on the tape...which is Sony.

@blaness13
@blaness13 Год назад
I mean speakers and batteries are Heavy AF, and that has a lot of both, so there is no making that thing light, same thing with the idea of mono vs stereo, it has stereo mids and high range speakers and Bass is always mono, as low freqs don't benefit from L and R most of the time, and to top that part off, the only way to get a defined L/R is two speakers on your left and right side, and then battery life seems pretty good once you understand the physics of power draw as it related to subs/low freqs and volume in general, It sounds like is plenty loud to not be needed at full volume at a party, and at that would your really need to crank it at full volume for 4 hours or more? Small speakers will NEVER get you the low end of a large speaker, its pure physics, like most of your complaints, the root of it them are physics bound. I can see plenty of use cases for this speaker and even a couple for going big and getting two of them.

The main problem with these wireless setups is the delay you get if you use it for basic sound mixing. I mean, no troubles just letting it play a playlist untouched but as soon as you wanna do a transition from one song to another on a mixpult, the delay throws you off. So you need to go wired then and this kind of beats the purpose.

I have the SRS-XP700 slightly smaller and probably from the previous generation. I love it. it is super loud, has 25 hours of battery life. I personally have used it for 15 hours at medium volume before I needed to charge it. I would recommend this speaker instead of the new SRS-XV900. This is because you can buy the XP700 for around 400 dollars compared to the insane $900 for the XV 900 Even though it has less power and sound. It has amazing bass, great sound quality, awesome for outdoor use. I personally use this for pool parties (water resistant), sand volleyball (not sand resistant but is pretty good if you wipe it down afterwards), and ultimate. I love it probably the best Sony speaker I have owned. (I bought the previous 2 generations as well) The cons however of the xp700 is that the apps are not very good. this extends as well to all Sony speakers however. They need to update it and receive customer suggestions because if the supporting apps were improved these speakers would feel a lot better.

@michaelbeckerman7532 Год назад
Exactly. What Sony (and every other company that makes a similar speaker) should do is give these devices the ability/option to easily switch between a battery-powered mode and an AC-powered mode. No one wants to run a speaker like this on battery in their home and then have to keep on recharging it all the time. They ONLY want to do that when the speaker will be used where there is no option to plug it in. Also, a device this size should have an easy to swap out, user-replaceable battery as well. If you aren't going to give it the option to run on AC power, then you are going to be drawing down the useful life of that battery in relatively short order. Once that rechargeable battery is worn out/used up, you're going to have to likely take it to a service center or battery specialty shop to get it professionally replaced. That's going to take a considerable amount of time and effort, especially on a unit of this size. This is something important that Sony really should have factored into their design decision/product planning on this item, right from the very start.

I have a down-a-level but same-idea JBL equivalent as a wireless "amp" for my keytar (funny that they were the sponsor lol, but they're both really reputable brands for this kind of thing). I can confidently say that for people who want wireless keytar amps (all 3 of you), they work amazingly. Plus I have a great portable speaker that I can use while doing the dishes, or I can bring it out at parties for background music (or more than background music if the occasion arrives), or have a party by myself with the lights and bass, etc. It's like another bit of expensive equipment that you don't know you need until you have it.

Long time fan! I work as a full time dj and worked retail for pro audio equipment. For the price , you can get much better stuff from other brands that have more skin in the game that’s still accessible and cheaper than the Sony. Bose, EV, JBL, and a personal fav QSC are the brands to check out. There’s battery and wall powered options that would blow this out the water that’s way more portable for the same price if not cheaper.

A proper surround speaker at the same price would sound better. Rave speakers are not designed for sound quality, just volume. If it happens to sound okay at high volume levels, great, but they are always underwhelming at low listening levels.

this is for people with more money than basic knowledge...for the same price you can get a very nice full home 5.1 or 7.1 audio system off craigs list or kijiji a real sub and game etc and do all media interaction on premium quality sound....the recommendations to listen to things on headphone will seem ridiculous. and no you dont need to upset your neighbors in your getto tower apartment

So glad I grabbed a Sony RDH-GTK37iP back in 2014. The RDH when new cost was a third what the SRS is listed for. Sure it's AC power only, but it still kicks ass and returned the initial investment with one event.

Not sure it has a place in my life, but some younger folks that need a battery powered portable stereo/pa system are going to have fun with those.

Use case for this: it’s a busy Dominican restaurant or deli in Brooklyn, during the day they use it to call out orders and and make announcements, maybe some light karaoke for larger gatherings. After close they blast it while they clean up. I wanna start a series soon where I go through interesting use cases for bizarre audio solutions. Like, there’s so much eyebrow rasing gear out there but most of it seems to find it’s unique use case.

I own a Thump Go. We use it for karaoke (sometimes as an all-in-one, and sometimes as a floor monitor for the singers). It has real combi-jacks so you can use either XLR or quarter inch. I don't know why this Sony doesn't have XLR inputs.

The bass being super high when over in the TV area wasn't because of the wall but because you were standing right in front of the port on that side. The bass will always be much, much louder near or directly in front of the port.

I'll poke a possibility for this. You go outside in a park (or outside in your yard), you throw a party for your friend, you have food, drinks, the usual park activities, a dozen families there with kids running around and screaming and shouting and having fun. You don't necessarily put it at the highest volume, but you do have a lot of oomph, hours of battery time, and enough to make your booty shake. Plug in a microphone, you got a karaoke. Plug in a portable mixer, a few instruments, and you can have a live band playing. It's not in our culture to do fiestas like this, but they do exist, and such device makes it awesome all-in-ones.

I'm pretty sure I passed a dude on Bourbon Street in New Orleans who could appreciate these speakers, his bicycle was one giant wall of noise with an insane nest of plugs and portable batteries. But "Massive Portable Party Dude" is a rather small niche in the speaker market... And they seem rather resourceful already, better to keep 'em busy god knows what speaker monstrosity they'll make if we keep making this easier lol (god I can't wait to hear it from miles away hahahaha)

Regardless of it not being for everybody which is true but the support it have for your TV is interesting. That means that if a person buy it just for partying they can also use it as a theater sound support system. Control the RGB lights with your phone via Bluetooth is Kool. Using one device to serve multiple purposes such as this party box is useful.
