I bought a 1989 cbr600f1 last year for 350 euro, it was a mess, but the engine sounded good, it had not a lot of the fairings and was painted with a brush.. I found me some fairings online for 90 euro and the owner had an old motogp3 performance exhaust lying around. Rebuild the fuel pump, new brake pads and a disc, new oil and new fork seals. Rewired the wireloom, replaced wheelbearings. Sanded it down and spray painted it matt black because it was 3euros the can. Total cost 350 for the bike 250 for all the supplies I got myself a fun bike for 600euro. Most importantly, the repairs I learned and the experience of rebuilding a bike made it all priceless.

I bought a 1990 CBR600F1 as well, for $250.00 CAD. The registration was another $95.00 CAD, because I guess SNB felt it was worth $1600.00 or something. It was not running, had no fairings, no headlight, no mirrors, no front turn signals, and the remaining turn signals didn't work as the flasher relay was busted. The horn wires were also cut, among other wiring issues. The oil cooler was also damaged and leaking oil slightly. AKA lots of problems. I'm not going the fairing route right now, as I'm too cheap. I put another ~$110.00 CAD into supplies (so far) and have most of the missing pieces all here and ready to go. Already got it running, and fixed the oil issues with a replacement oil cooler. Headlight is on now too, along with new mirrors. Now I'm just slowly converting it into a naked/cafe/street-fighter style to make it street legal again. For real, just working on it has been a learning experience all on it's own. It's much better than buying a new bike that already works, for me at least. Painting the bike will be a future project, along with the fairings, but for now it runs and drives no problem. It's inspired my buddy to bring me on a trip to Halifax so he can buy another no-start bike for under $500.00 CAD, a 1983 CB550 Nighthawk this time. Should be a fun experience for him too. Glad I have another 600F1 brother keeping the old girls alive! Viva la Restorations hahaha

@@gloriouschannel3683 Hey man, I'm a complete noob with no training at all. I got myself a bike a year ago and learned to do a lot of work since, general maintenance and replacing the wear and tear parts (sprockets, drive chain), plus repairs in brakes, electrics, subframe, and identify and fix a small fault in the engine itself. I figure if I can get to this point with just google, you (with training and maybe access to professional tools and advice) can learn to do the whole entire bike from the ground up in way less than a year.

Bought my wife's first bike, a CM175 for $350. It was near perfect with slight chrome pitting. I taught her, my sister-in-law and a friend's wife how to ride on it (not at the same time). They dinged it up a bit but it worked her into a V-Star then it went on to teach even more new riders. They are out there.

It's funny this video popped up this morning for me. My friend of 25 years, his wife messaged me wanting to surprise him for his birthday this month. Yesterday she bought a 1980 Goldwing 1100 for 450 bucks. It was a 1 owner bike with a file of maintenance done to it. Has not been on the road since 06. I did post a video of the reveal, the video isn't the best since i wasn't trying to make it obvious that i was filming her giving the bike to him. We played it off as i bought another Goldwing. I bought a '91 Honda Nighthawk 750 a couple months ago for $200. The bike has 9,000 miles, but hadn't been started in two-years, or licensed since 2002. It had been lightly dropped on both sides, but the damage is just light cosmetic. I've already rebuilt the front brake caliper ($10), replaced a bent clutch lever ($5), and replaced the lost keys ($15). I still need to drain the tank, rebuild the carbs (the rebuild kit was $80), replace the battery ($50), and replace the turn signals ($40). Oh, and tax and title transfer was $68. I would love to keep it, but I plan to sell it for between $1500 and $1700, and use the money restore the interior of my '78 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible.

Instead of spraying gasoline into the intake I use propane. I use an old propane torch with the end removed and 3/8" hose slipped on and a hose clamp to secure it. The end of the hose is placed where the carbs can suck up the vapor when the torch valve is opened. Never turn on the propane before turning over the engine. It will displace the oxygen in the intake so the engine will not start. Simply hit the starter button, open the propane valve, and once started adjust the torch valve for best idle. Using propane from a small disposable bottle and modified torch is much safer and cleaner. No spilled gasoline or gasoline in a non approved container that could spill and ruin the inside of your vehicle. Propane is safe for the engine as well. It burns clean and has a higher octane rating than pump gas.

@BikesandBeards 5 лет назад
Wow that’s great info I m going to have to try that
@bandaddie
@bandaddie 5 лет назад
This is a great idea, however there are a few cautions; Propane engines require an ignition advance of 24 degrees from the gasoline setting. If there is any water in the gasoline, propane will freeze it in the jets as propane will drop to minus 40 F when vaporizing. Since you understand oxygen displacement, you have done your homework.
@dkruitz
@dkruitz 5 лет назад
@@BikesandBeards that trick can also be used to find vacuum leaks or intake manifold leaks. Move the propane hose around slowly, listen for the change in the idle and theres your leak.

Gotta correct you about the Kawasaki W650 it wasn't designed to look like a Triumph Bonneville it was actually a carbon copy of the BSA A10 Which was another British bike from the same period. The original W650 was manufactured and sold in the late60s/early70s by Kawasaki but was discontinued when the technology improved and the KZ or Z series of machines replaced it. The W650 was rereleased in late 90s/early 2000s when the retro machines became popular. The dates of the bikes may seem a bit vague but that is because of times of release in various Countries around the world.

Realistically, if you're a "beginner" or someone new to motorcycles, you will never find a good deal for below $1000 What I mean by that is, you're probably going to buy a bike that needs some sort of maintenance / know-how to get it to run. It's not like buying a new bike that will start up and go everytime. I mean, that much is a given, and you can say that you can "learn how"... but that also comes with IF you weren't ripped off in the first place... which you wouldn't know since again, you're new. Add the other layer of *GEAR* that you have to buy, the minimum of which is a helmet. Add another layer of motorcycling lessons etc. etc. it piles on. Still, overall, if you're city riding, then getting a scooter will probably save you not only on $ but also on headaches, since it has "simpler" specs... like it's prob a 1 cylinder, and insurance cost etc. However I will say, I do think overall you're probably going to afford riding a motorcycle first than you would riding a car. Granted a car is the better option for investment (like if you start a family etc, for groceries and so on) but that's another topic.

I picked up a 2002 1200 Bandit 6 years ago for $900. It had been down on both sides, but his insurance paid for all new bodywork. He hadn't installed it yet, but it all came with the bike. It ran good, but there was some clunking in the drivetrain which I attributed to the badly rusted chain. He thought it was the tranny and I didn't argue. A couple hours to install the brand new tank, bodywork, and new chain, and it looks and runs perfectly. These old Bandits are super reliable, run great, easy to hotrod if you want, and have cheap insurance because they're not a sportbike.

Bought an '82 Suzuki GS 1100EZ for $250 in about 1995. Drained the tank, cleaned the carbs and fired it up. Rode that thing for 3 years. It had a Yoshimura true 4 into 1 exhaust and it was an awesome sound. Not much for handling, but holy moly, it ripped in a straight line!

My first bike was a Rebel 250 that didn't run. Charged the battery because it was dead, took apart and cleaned the carb, drained the tank and put fresh gas, new plugs. Ran perfectly. Turned it to a bobber and made a grand on it after I sold it. Now I'm riding a 2022 Bonneville T100

Was doing electrical work in 2010 for a lady, noticed in her basement a 1999 super clean Honda Shadow Ace 750 with 6,500 miles on it. Also an old 1974 Indian ME 125 Enduro. Showed interest in the Shadow and the lady gave me both bikes for a Grand. The Shadow was bought in her name for her husband who ran off with another woman. Had been sitting there for 3 years. The Indian was his he had bought at an auction to restore with no title. Sold the Indian "as is" for $400.00 (only things that kept it from running were all hoses, fuel line needed to be replaced. I did manage to get it to start spraying gas into the intake for about 30 seconds, had no chain and missing front sprocket). The Shadow I replaced the fuel, and oil and I put 25,000 miles on it before I sold it cheap for $1,800 to my daughters BF.

May have already been mentioned but what a pity you pitched the backrest...you may not have cared for the look but the buyer should have the option. Especially if they're going to take a passenger or tour with the bike. I have an '81 Suzuki GS650GS and I wish I had a backrest with luggage rack so my pillions would be more comfy and I could strap a bag on the back. If nothing else it would have made good business sense to sell the thing on craigslist for $50. Just my humble opinion.

...they should not just be thrown out, but melted down & pounded into crash bars. Theres never been any accessory more counter to a bikes classic lines than a sissy bar. However. on many of the new bikes, it would fit right in.The aerodynamic, smooth flow look is out and the crushed look is in.

Owned an 82 CB750Custom with dealer installed Goldwing fairing and luggage boxes matching black with blue detailing. Had the sliding driver's backrest from KG. Beautiful bike which I rode for a decade or so and loved every minute of it. Best I ever owned. The early 80's bikes were awesome. Only downside was the charging system crapped out and was not cheap to fix. Ran 80k up on the motor with zero other issues. Still wish I kept her.

If you are looking to buy cheap from a dealer try Bert's Harley Davidson in Clearwater Florida. They sell bikes for what ever they gave for the trade in. I picked up a one owner low milage 98 FLSTF that had been stored since 2015 I paid $3.100.00 for it and Luckily the gas tank was drained before he stored it in a air conditioner building. I put new tires wheel bearing and did a service and it runs great. Deals are out there specially if you have cash. Fun video.
