My bits of knowledge... 1) don't fall in love with a specific car... always be prepared to walk away if its not the right deal, 2) don't overspend/stay within your budget, 3) shop around for deals & financing, 4) be aware salespeople are paid (commissions) by getting you to pay as much as possible for your car, and 5) you are a transaction to them... they are nice to you because they want your money. They are not your friend or looking to get you the best deal... their goal is to sell cars at the highest price you can (or even cannot) afford.
@LionRunner
@LionRunner 2 года назад
@fortune eight sadly that was in the past. Now its like bidding. Customer ready to pay the market adjustment gets the car over the customer try to buy at MSRP.
@mrallan8063
@mrallan8063 2 года назад
One more thing... when they say you got a "great deal", it a big warning sign you are getting ripped off. They use flattery and compliments to close deals they want badly (big commissions because you are overpaying)... generally, the more they compliment, the worse deal you are getting.

DEFINITION OF CAR SALESPERSON: = A person that is smiling in your face and trying to make you feel like they are trying to invite you to the family reunion as a new member of the family while getting ready to back stab you and try to overcharge you or completely rip you off all the while smiling in your face. ☮

As a guy who used to sell cars I’ll share one tip that is a rather odd one but I always found to be useful. Check out the radio presets. If they are full of rock and roll/pop young people type music that may indicate that a younger clientele used to own the car and more than likely skipped out on maintenance and were maybe a little rougher on the car. However, if those presents are classic music/talk stations or even easy listening there is a good chance it was owned by an older person who typically take better take of their vehicles and are not as rough on them.

That is a good point as well as a car that has a lot of modifications on it.. That is usually typical of someone that is younger and is harder on a car.. I see videos of younger guys getting the new Honda Accord turbo and putting different types of air filters/air induction and mods to get better performance.. I don't want one of those cars if I was purchasing a pre-owned car as well.. Not even if it was one or two years old they could do a lot of damage in that time.
@stephenjones9153
@stephenjones9153 2 года назад
🤣😂🤣 In my experience I have always found heavy metal and rock and roll are usually owned by older more careful drivers who always do there own regular oil changes and maintenance but if its pop music then it's usually been thrashed and had no maintenance done on it as most youngsters don't even know what a dip stick or radiator is for. If you find 40s and 50s music then it's usually been serviced regularly by main dealer's or good reliable local mechanics. 😉👍👍

We once purchased a car from a sales person whom we ultimately didn't like. When we went back to buy another vehicle a few years later we asked to do business with a different sales person and were told we couldn't because we were in "the system" as one of his clients and that could not be changed without ruffling some feathers. So we ended up taking our business to a different dealership all together. Total nonsense!
@charlesjackson1700
@charlesjackson1700 2 года назад
That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard.. I would use whichever salesman I wanted.. That would be the same as buying a house from an agent that you did not care for... the same thing I encountered once.. I would never be coerced to use her again.. I would have some very choice words for them as well !!!

You cannot get the "best" price from a car sales person. You can only get that "best" price from the sales manager. The sales person is just a middle man between the customer and the sales manager. In any dealership, if you do not get the sales manager directly involved you did not get that "best" price. If you did not make that sales manager believe you are walking away you, more likely than not, did not get that "best" price.

I love how you emphasize the magnitude of the decision and putting in the corresponding effort to make the right decision. At one point, you mention getting a vehicle that you will live with for 15 years. At another point, you mention the amount of money that this involves and that it is not just buying a new mobile phone. You look at car buying just like I do since I keep my cars for 10+ years and it is critical that I get something I can live with longterm. I just wish I could find sales folks that thought of the process in the same way. Every single one of them is looking to make a sale that day (from my experience). They do not generally like folks who are analytical or put alot of thought into the process. They seem to recognize that their time is better spent with a gullible buyer that they can manipulate and make much higher profit with less time spent. Thanks for the interesting video - definitely some good advice in there.

As a previous car salesman, new cars, I can tell you the sales staff for most part want to make a good and honest sale. They want you happy so you send can people their way. referral sales are better than walk-up sales. Less headache. Again most sales people, there are a bunch of high strung idiot also 😂. But, as the saying goes Sh&t flows downhill. It's the senior management who pressure the sales staff to be that way, the pit them against each other, they threaten them, they abuse them verbally, they steal from their commission, and a lot more. The old guard in the tower big offices don't care, if you can't make it they got plenty of applicants.

I am in total agreement to building a relationship with a dealer and a particular sales person. I have purchased our last 7 cars from Tonkin Toyota in Portland OR, and 5 of those 7 cars from the same sales guy, (shout out to Justin Lemons). He has my complete trust and takes great care of my family. In fact, we moved 1000 miles away from that dealer a few months ago, and since we love working with Justin so much, we are going to be driving all the way back up there to buy a new RAV4 from him in a couple of weeks. It makes a huge difference building that relationship.... And props to AMD and Jeff in this video. You both are awesome. God bless!

I believe they would each become overwhelmed, to the point where the customer experience suffers. They are each great at what they do independently. Not everyone is comfortable with actually interacting with customers on a face-to-face basis in the same manner that a sales representative does. This would be a topic that I'd be curious to hear them address in a short video.

Well said. I ran into a pushy sales person and who wanted me to put down a deposit without even test driving the vehicle. She also tried to get me to buy a white car which is not our preferred color. Needless to say we walked. Went to a different dealer and ended up putting a deposit down on a new Rav4 hybrid.

The dealers in my area are large dealerships. When we went shopping for my wife's 18 RAV4 hybrid (new) we found out that some of the sales persons did not even know certain cars were on the lot. We wanted a hybrid so the sales person is driving around in the golf cart and he had 50 RAV4s at the time (pre Covid days) and one was a hybrid. All were parked in one row of course and he had no idea a hybrid was in the row of RAV4s. I found it by luck as he was driving and I was looking. I could have easily missed it. As it worked out it was an XLE with all the upgraded features we wanted. Perfect. The lesson, don't assume the sales person knows what cars are on the lot. From now on I will walk the lot without a sales person first.

My biggest advice for buying a new car besides the excellent video content. Always deal with the internet department aka fleet sales. Skip the sales person in the showroom. I have purchased over 15 new brand new vehicles, Toyotas ,Hondas and 1 Mazda this way, it will save you a lot of time and headaches. 1/2 of the time, I already negotiated on the price on the phone and spent 30 to 60 minutes at the dealership to sign and leave. Never, ever buy any vehicle based on monthly payments, buy it based on the price negotiated on the vehicle that want and you can afford. Don't expect a great deal when it comes to used cars these days from any dealerships.

Between 2005 and now, I bought six Toyota vehicles from 4 different Toyota dealerships. Can’t recommend the experience with any of them. The cars, for the most part are pretty good. Now its spring 2023 and I was interested in the new Prius. Reviews look great. When they finally started showing up here, the dealers were asking several 1000’s over MSRP. Well, with the government rebate, the Tesla 3 was cheaper and Tesla did not try to gouge me. Ordered the Tesla on line, all electronic agreements, good financing, good insurance, and no hard sell add-on junk. Pickup took 15 minutes for the Tesla rep to show us how to program our phones as keys and demonstrate car features. Best pick up experience ever with no surprises. Goodbye Toyota. Your dealer greed ran me off. And the Tesla is amazing.

Researched for 7 years, got a 21 Tacoma sr5 v6 dcsb last August made in S.A, TX. It was a good looking truck, but not perfect for me after 4k miles. Went to get a Highlander, Rav4 or what?, test drive and get a feel, the last one I tested? A 22' Camry LE in Ice Edge, Yep, uh huh...good stuff guys!. I would not have guessed this basic model with 17" alloys would be SO good, and handle like a go-kart lol! (And hit 39.7 mpg in the first 100 miles). Final result; went from a 21 Tacoma sr5 rwd to a 22 Camry LE, wow...very happy camper now! Weird but true, with good service at Valley Hi Toyota.

I'm a long time subscriber of both of you. Bravo, great video that is full of honest & informative stuff about the buying process. A certain dealership is very important, when I purchased my Rav4 XSE hybrid in August 2020 I chose an out of town dealership because he had the exact XSE hybrid with the technology package coming to their dealership in a couple weeks and it wasn't spoken for yet. All went well and I picked up my new Rav4 and when I got home 200 miles away I noticed that the dealership had installed an aftermarket trailer hitch without asking me if I wanted an aftermarket one (which I didn't like at all as I expected the Toyota hitch which was way better suited for the Rav than the cheap & awkward looking aftermarket one). I was not happy and expressed my disappointment to them & to Toyota Canada. Shame on me I guess for not catching that when I picked it up. It won't affect me not getting another Toyota as I love my Rav4 XSE but maybe the next time I'll deal with a different dealership that won't force something on me without my knowledge. Again, great video AMD & Jeff!

I hope Toyota pays you extra well because just the fact that you put it together convinced me to buy a new Toyota. So here is the value. I brought a used Toyota Corolla 2003 a few years ago. The purchase was for having a car for bad weather. Car looked nice, clean, no body damage, and it had 134k miles. The 134k miles was no biggie as we know Toyotas last many, many miles. I took it our for a test ride. It was a hot day so the A/C and of course the fan was on. Everything looked good, motor was tight, no rattles etc. So I purchased the car. The next day I picked up the car and on the way home, I found the windows would not work on both back doors and front passenger door. The driver door would operate the windows, only when the fan was on!!! The dealer wanted no part of it. So I had to figure it out myself. Someone tapped off the battery, ( glad they put a fuse inline) and they put a relay in. I went and got a wire diagram from another dealer and traced the wiring. I was able to correct what they did so now it is wired exactly like from factory. Needless to say, some dealer mechanics are not that bright. I have to pat myself on the back for this one.

I know people will call me crazy but I've never found buying a car to be all that difficult or stressful. First of all the dealer did not force me to come in and they can not force me to spend my money. People fuss about high pressure but there's never any pressure. If you don't like what's going on you just walk out to your car and drive away. It really is that simple. You don't have to be nasty or rude you just say let me think about it and leave and if they push more you just keep walking and leave. With a new car all the tools you need to get a good price are at your finger tips, it does help to have an actual computer and not just a phone to see all the information but a phone will work. The main thing sis to do your research and keep emotions out of the deal. It's a car, nothing more. It's not life saving medicine or the answer to world peace. The excitement will fade in a few weeks or months and you're left with payments, or maintenance, or both. Don't worry about what you friend said they paid for a new car unless you bought the same car at the same dealer on the same day. Otherwise too many factors are involved to be able to say you should have gotten the same price. And with used cars there are even more factors involved. Research what the prices are during the time frame you intend to buy and pick your number. Out the door, all fees and garbage included and when you get that number shake the man or woman's hand and drive away happy. Don't worry for a second that you could have saved an extra fifty dollars if only you had staged a fake nervous breakdown. If fifty bucks one time was really going to break you then you can't afford a car anyway. Yes, I've had my time wasted. Yes, I've had dealers try and pull typical dealership B.S. and I just left. On one occasion I actually asked to see the sales contract that wasn't even signed yet when I saw the numbers were different than we agreed to and tore it up in front of the sales manager and the sales lady. I drove and hour away where I'd already discussed the same deal with another dealer and this time the agreed to price stayed the same and they delivered the car for free to my door 70 miles away. There are good dealerships out there and if you know your stuff they recognize and respect that and don't try all the B.S. You got a price and if they can or are willing to meet it then they will. If not you move on to a dealer that will or reassess whether your price is reasonable. Because, believe it or not, there is a point at which a dealer can't sell a car without losing money and a lot of people adamantly believe there's thousand more to be had off the sticker even after they've reached true rock bottom.
@AcidFlash123

Another important thing that wasn't mentioned, DO NOT buy a new vehicle and pay over MSRP. Just take note which ones are gouging and scamming you by adding "market adjustments" and when things settle down buy your car from an honest dealer. Before COVID, if you even paid MSRP for a vehicle you weren't very astute. Don't be scammed and pay over. Make the dealers who are charging extra pay for their greed. Don't feed them.

I guess I’m the “odd” one, I definitely spend over 17hrs researching, case in point, I’m already figuring out what car I want to replace my 11 corolla with in about 2 years, gives me plenty of time to read the forums, watch videos, and get a grasp on the pricing today and where it should be once things level out... and when I was looking for my corolla 4 years ago, I looked at probably 15-20 used ones before settling on the one I have now. (I drive a ton so between New York winters/salt and the miles, I’ll have approx 200k on my corolla 2 years from now, and bought the car with under 100k on it, and the underbody/unibody is showing the salt with rust starting in some areas like on the pinch weld which is getting soft as a marshmallow in some areas) Far as buying new, like my last truck and now my current truck, I visited 3-4 dealers, test drive a bunch for my last one, but only drove my truck I bought in April as I couldn’t even get my hands on one to drive before I jumped for the truck I got due to the shortages. But that was even a 2 week process of driving around and getting a feel for what I was gonna buy. Research isn’t a bad thing to do, as more then likely you’ll be keeping it for a long time, so why buy a problem child when you can avoid it (unless in my case the forums were being “cleansed” of the problem as Chevy didn’t want everyone to know of the problems they are having with their motors, so the forum admins were deleting and banning people who posted anything negative about Chevy..., which is a rather sore subject currently with me) But one issue in my area is all the dealers are being bought up by one franchise which use to be good and where I bought a majority of my new cars and truck from.... now they have gotten so big they don’t deal, it’s “this is the price, take it or leave it” even before the pandemic, they were 2-3k above market then, and trying to tell me “we are selling this for less then we gave them on trade for it”. And the two other Toyota dealers in my area I wouldn’t send my worst enemy to, the one has a good service dept, which I’ll go to, but I’ve watched my share of people get up and walk away after their smoke and mirrors they pull. So if I want a new Toyota I’m literally going to be driving 150-200 miles away to find someone who might deal

These are 2 of my favourite Toyota people right here, love watching both Jeff and AMD's videos. Real genuine gentlemen right here. Plain and simple, now is not the time to buy a car. Unless you really absolutely have to have one for safety or reliability reasons just don't do it. Mark my words, when this is behind us, we are going to have a flood of used cars that people bought out of desperation and fear(kinds like toilet paper). Like Jeff said, if you want YOUR perfect car go to the dealer and order one and then wait. I know our lead time out for Toyota models is about 2-5 months depending on the vehicle. On our Ford lot, if you want a Bronco or a Maverick, 12-16 months. You want a Bronco off the lot, get ready to pay at least $25K over MSRP. It's not worth it, just wait. It's not las though every car is disappearing off the planet.

A few years back we were buying a new Toyota and we overheard a conversation, actually more like a shouting match in the cubicle next to us. A lady was alone trying to buy a used Dodge, and the salesperson actually did say to her: "This discount is only good for the next 20 minutes." Talk about pressure and just total lack of professionalism! She walked out on the guy. Fortunately, our sales guy was very nice and competent. Your salesperson really can make or break a deal. Be nice to each other. It's easier this way.

I agree, respect is key when dealing with a salesman. I’ve tried looking at cars alone and the salesman didn’t even bother to show me the car once he found out I had a family. He told me he’ll show me the car once I bring my wife with. Smh He lost that sale. I’ve also had another experience where the sales manager stopped out personally to just tell me, if you don’t buy it at this price, we’ll just sell it to auction at the price anyways so you’ll lose out on the car.

Every time you set foot in a dealership you are entering a high pressure/slick sales tactics environment. If the dealership has a non haggle policy then it is a lot less stressful. In Mexico all new car models have the same price at all dealerships in the country. You don't have to go to a different dealership to get a cheaper price because that same brand and model is the same price all over Mexico and the price includes all taxes. No haggling or high pressure salesmen/dealerships. You only have to decide what car you want. In the US even if you get a cheaper price at a different dealership you are still getting played one way or another, IMO.

My latest car buying experience was easy. I had a bought a used(16k miles) 2019 Avalon XLE(March 2020). This summer I decided I wanted the upgrade to a 'Limited' 2021. My dealership found the EXACT Blueprint/Black(V6)with all the options. Gave me 'good deal' on the trade in, and bought it on the spot. That was July, it now has 2100 miles on it. Leather/JBL/Sunroof/Ventilated Seats. Zero buyers remorse and it's still worth what I paid for it too.

First of all, it's not about size and features, that's salesman talk. It's about maintenance completed and maintenance due. When you buy a used vehicle it's about condition and history. In the 1970's my friends family purchased a two door Ford Maverick, they had 9 kids!!
@Toyotajeff
@Toyotajeff 2 года назад
hahaha well that wouldn't have been very practical at all for your friend's family. Everyone has different criteria when buying cars. It is important to match what a customer has listed as most important criteria for them and their family with what is available and what fits their budget. Plus clearly you want to know reliability and maintenance specs if available. Great insight Tony!

Once the research is done..and you pick a model for certain..then go try to rent that model for a day or two to actually try out that model.. also pack a lunch as spending 10hrs plus to negotiate a vehicle for 15% to 30% below msrp..negotiate for out the door price..not monthly payments or even offer a trade in..just the lowest out the door price 1st..only then think about a trade in..as most people actually give the stealership their trade in vehicle for free..as they always ask 1st if you have a trade in to set the vehicle price high enough to get your trade in for near free as possible..literally cut the msrp to 40% less as a starting point as you can inch up but never go back down in price..if it takes 12hrs but get 18k off msrp its worth it..of course this current market situation isn't going to work as many people are paying way over msrp which is incredibly insane..wait till the stealership is fully stocked with cars on the lot..don't buy in to the BS sales nonsense they push..I've gotten many vehicles way under msrp each time..

Advice only gets one so far when it comes to buying a car. I bought 13 cars in my life time over 5 years and all but one time I managed to screw something up. (Had a good experience with my 2020 Honda Fit) I overpaid for what I got, didn't have problems disclosed, ended up with junk that I was ultimately unhappy with. I definitely didn't go through with a handful of purchases that would have been nightmares, and I only regret one purchase I didn't make. This PYSCHO car market has me stuck, for better or for worse, with my current car, a 2012 Toyota Highlander that needed $5k worth of work within 3 months of buying it, and yes I paid full retail for it, $2k over what NADA said it was worth because it was what I wanted. It has been fantastic after getting it sorted out though. I feel like 92% of the car buying advice on the internet is just stuff that sounds nice but rarely works in reality and is just the bane of car salespeople's existence. This video was half decent.
