Always get a PPI when buying a Porsche, I recently purchased a 2005 Carrera with 20k on it. I purchased the car from Salt Lake City Utah over 2 thousand miles away from my home in Florida. The Carfax showed the car was always serviced at Salt Lake City Porsche. I called them and spoke to the service department and then had the car sent over to Morris Brothers Motors in Salt Lake City for my PPI ($250.00) Jaime was great, he did the PPI . Jaime sent me pics of all imperfections and checked everything all the way down to the date codes on the tires. fortunately for me the car only needed a cabin filter. The biggest concern with buying a 99-08 Porsche is the IMS issue and how hard the car was revved in its life. Definitely take your time when purchasing a 911, do your home work and educate yourself before purchasing. It took me over a year to find the right car for me.

Another great vid..! That reminds me when I went hunting for my 996 I finally bought a car without any Pre-Purchase inspection hoping to rely purely on my experience and ended up buying with my heart..! Anyway - despite of worn out clutch and steering rack leaks the car showed up to be pretty problem-free to the degree that friendly Porsche garage servicing my 993 on yearly basis asked if I would like to sell it one day..! The only thing I would add to your vid is the importance of service records - my car has a thick folder full of receipts going back to 1996 and certificate of authenticity issued by Porsche. I could trace every single part being replaced/repaired etc.. Regards!

@911Percent 6 лет назад
I agree, I completely omitted the service records point by mistake! I just assumed everyone will be looking at cars with records lol... But yes, big mistake! Also a paint meter test is important during the PPI, something not all shops can do and will let you know if any body panels were painted. Thank you so much for watching Thorwald!! Take care!

Nice set of steps for purchase! Just what we followed and we ended up with a nice car. Big plus for the Essential Companion. Great read! Might want to check out maintenance schedules so you know what to expect. Another thing is what mods have been done? Can you reverse anything you don't like and are they substantial or just a bunch of do-dads... Color is hard to wait for, but can be difficult to live with if you aren't happy... Enjoyable video as always. Good luck all who are out searching! F

Thanks for watching Franny! Yeah, I omitted a few specific details for sure...It's hard with these long winded videos; when I'm cutting them it feels like I'm rambling and I end up taking important details out!! I mentioned records in a few takes lmao! C'est la vie! Good point about mods. Also I should've mentioned a paint thickness test during the PPI would be a good idea too if you're concerned with paintwork... Again, thanks for tuning in and all the support!! Cheers!

Oh, there are like a million things to remember! That book was, for me, like the best thing ever. I learned a ton! There is another book called "The Used 911 Story" by Zimmermann, but he is a bit dark on the 993 but good to see the downside as well.. The Companion is really good (pricey though). Talking about the community is something you don't hear much and it is such a huge part! We have met just the nicest folks through the PCA and 356 groups. It can really alter the whole course of your life! Glad you got a little driving so far!
@911Percent
@911Percent 6 лет назад
Same here..Love Streather's book! I've read Zimmermann's book too, it's good, but what's awesome about The Companion is that I still use it to this day for a quick reference or a fact check! The community aspect is huge, and a big part of it for me. I know some owners like to be private, but what a shame; nothing beats a bright convoy of little Porsches and drivers with HUGE smiles :)

All your tips and tricks goes for any such investment, any car, or even a house. I really liked your tip #7. The previous owner tells you EVERYTHING you need to know. Also as Jay Leno puts it, buying from an original owner is the best deal ever. Then you can really gauge what you're getting into. if it's a second or third owner, it wont matter what they are like if the first one was a slob with the car. I just can't believe how many people treat their 911's as throwaways... as always, da noize, tunes and otherwise - excellent - please continue. Your weekly vids brings on that good vibe feeling.

Another thing that is important to consider when buying a 911 (especially if you are going to be driving it) is that even if the car looks great during the PPI, some minor issues will inevitably come up when you start driving it. This isn't to say that you got a bad deal or that these cars are unreliable, it just means that you might want to have a bit of money set aside for future issues and regular maintenance.
@911Percent
@911Percent 6 лет назад
DUDE, totally! That's a great point. I find people put a lot of pressure on shops and expect a black/white type of report from a 1-3hour inspection -- "There should obviously be nothing wrong with my 20 year old German sports car with 150k kms"...lol I think the sweet spot is a combined total of all these data points -- PPI, your own eyes, service records, owner profile, etc, that will tell the true story. Cheers man!
@maxmeier532
@maxmeier532 9 месяцев назад
well, base of the ppi should be a thorough examination and careful attention to the car's documented history (with comparison to experts' knowledge of known problems of the model). Hence a 150k km car may very well not have any soon upcoming issues, if it was diligently maintained. @@911Percent

Good video with great advice. That’s how i would go about it. I’ve been lurking on rennlist for over a year, probably 2. I hadn’t considered the book, tho. I get all my info from RU-vid and forums. PPI is absolutely a must. So is patience and perseverance. Definitely have to recognize that you will most likely have to compromise on somethings, but stand firm on others. Great video! Looking forward to the reveal video. Next week?

Hey, the wheels on my Boxster are almost identical to those BBS wheels, Gunmetal faces with stainless steel deep dish split rims they look best on black cars I think, certainly better than black wheels. I have 19” which fill the arches beautifully, the plastic bolt on rear arch guards and mud flaps (I don’t have side skirts) are narrower than the wheels so they appear wider which also helps the stance.

Very good points. My budget was a driver car and happy so that I can drive it and not care as much. I put a bunch of cash into mine to make sure everything was new to my mechanical ability. Now I have a great startung point. Only thing I hate is the rock chips on front bumper. Nothing a respray can't fix. Figure I will do that last then PPF the front.
@911Percent
@911Percent 6 лет назад
Sounds like we're in the same stage of ownership...Car's mechanics are up to snuff, but the front end needs a respray! They told me I need to paint up to the A pillars and windshield..ugh, that's almost half of the car!
@ftlaud911
@ftlaud911 6 лет назад
911Percent - same here! I knew going in so it doesn't upset me as much, but I am OCD about my car like you. This why I got a driver. I don't kid myself I would love a garage queen. Unfortunately I would cringe though every time I got a chip or scratch. I also need a windshield due to a small chip and some pitting. Porsche windshields are notorious for pitting. In the end though I can get in the car and drive it and not freak out as much which is the whole point of owning it.

Love the effort you put in regarding the visuals. However, apart from some Porsche forums, there was no useful information on 993-specific things, you know, stuff to look out for and such. Just general advice that would suite any used car. Since you've clearly put in the effort for your own hunt, sharing those pieces of information would have been much more appreciated.

Great tips and exactly the opposite of what I did when I bought mine. :) I didn't get a PPI because other parties were trying to buy it from under me and I took a gamble due to the service history. I sent a deposit before seeing the car (or even sitting in a 993!) and then I flew 1500 km to buy it and drive it home. Craziest thing I've ever done. I would have saved a lot of money by getting a PPI - or maybe even passed on it, but the car is amaranth violet and I'd searched for three years. And it was purple! I had to buy it. PS - Show us yer new wheels! :D
@911Percent
@911Percent 6 лет назад
That sounds like such an epic adventure!! Sometimes you have to roll with the punches, but sounds like you still did everything you could to make that non-PPI gamble easier! That's a great colour man, congrats!!! I would've done the same. ! I believe I've seen pics of your car on the RL thread! It's a C2 right? AMAZING!

Excellent advice! Funny comment on the tan interior. In my case - I bought a black car even though I knew better - I love it, but I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER BLACK CAR - EVER. They look amazing after a detail, but really show every bit of dirt and scratches. My advice - Hold out for your preferred color, it is worth the wait. That said, I do love my Carrera! I am looking forward to your wheel reveal!

James Eli agree on black cars. I had a Carbon Black e46 M3, and it looked good when washed. 30 minutes later you want to cry tho. I’ll never buy another black (or very dark car) unless I can afford to have a detailer on call. And my preferred color is Speed Yellow, but I’ll probably die before I find one of those on the market with the right boxes ticked.

I should've elaborated. The platforms are not as thriving as they used to be. I agree, lots of great info in forums - this is why I sent people there for information. Forums are my go-to when I have to solve a problem. The search-ability of articles and content that's great on forums. I did notice over the last 10 years that the sense of community has died on a lot of Porsche forums which is sad.
@K1dPhresh1

911Percent a lot of times the forums take a turn for the worse. When I was on One of the more popular M3 forums you could get all the info you ever needed about whatever you needed, but there was a growing crowd of knuckleheads who started to turn threads into something you might see in RU-vid comments on some channels. Active moderators and even forums members policing it up were important.

Dude, the 350Z is a spectacular sports car!! Congrats! I always loved the balance of that chassis. When I was shopping for my 993 few years back, 350Zs were the same price lol :P..anyway man, it's just a progression, work hard, keep loving cars and keep leveling-up the older you get until you finally get the dream car! Thanks for watching!
@PaulHindt
@PaulHindt 6 лет назад
I just sold my 350z after about 4 years of ownership and 40k miles. I agree that the chassis is incredibly balanced and holds the road very well. However the whole time I had the Z I kept feeling like it was still a bit too big and heavy on the road for me, and not quite raw and analog enough. Since then I've really been studying up on the 911 platform and I believe the 911SC or 3.2 Carrera is my ideal car. I hope I have the opportunity to drive one soon during my search for the right car.

Thank you for posting this, but one very important point missing in this video is the major differences between the 1995 cars and all the other years. The 1995 is OBD1, so it does not have to pass emissions and it does not throw a check engine light if the secondary air injection (SAI) ports get clogged, a common and recurring problem with OBD2 96-98 993's which can be very costly to fix. At the very least, one has to periodically clean the SAI, also not cheap, or time consuming if doing yourself, if one wants to pass emissions consistently. The 1995 also does not have the notorious immobilizer, which can be an annoyance as well. The main (arguable) downside of the 1995 is that it does not have the varioram. The gain in power (a little over 10HP) and mid-range responsiveness provided by the varioram are dependent upon proper tuning of the varioram, which is not exactly trivial. Personally, I have driven cars with and without varioram and could barely tell the difference, at least in normal street and highway driving. At the track it might be different. There are other differences as well - e.g. different thickness rear sway bar, 1995 is the only year with the so-called "basket handle' by the decklid, etc., but these are all changeable, if at all necessary. Perhaps because of the lack of varioram, the 1995 cars tend to be less expensive. For my money and no track use, I certainly prefer not having to deal with passing emissions with an air cooled engine, the immobilizer, or tuning the varioram. As you may have guessed, I have a 1995. It is a fantastic car.
@911Percent
@911Percent 6 лет назад
Yes, there are a lot of important details and model differences to know about these cars..but I think this is part of the research stage I was talking about and the importance of reading up and learning about the cars. I would think that someone seriously in the market would know that there is an engine difference between 94-95 and 96+ cars, SAI and emissions systems, and wonky immobilizers, etc.. and the pros-cons associated with them. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! Your points are very valid! :)

Very good points. The 95 model has one negative, but most are positive. If you get a LWFW you may deal with stalling more. Additionally there is not widebody option. All a give take, but overall the 95 seems to have less possible issues in my mind. Unfortunately, I was infatuated by the widebody hips. Best rear end 911 in my book, but we got the funky headlights so it offsets it. Personally love the 964 headlight cannons!
@993ninja
@993ninja 4 года назад
Key things with 1994 & 1995 993 is they are very close the the best 964 engine so can be upgraded a lot because many RS RSR Cup GT2 cars all this engine. I’ve got two 3.8. A C4 with a rare engine type that Adrian Streather was looking into for me & C2 RSR engined that’s just brutal. And best car I’ve driven. And is faster than a Turbo S 993. The 3.8 extra punch and high revving gives it the O-60 close to 3 seconds that even a copper said that’s the fasted car he has ever seen, much faster than his brothers 996 Turbo and much faster than a 997 Turbo a rolling road chap mentioned to me. Just finding the right garage, with all Porsche dealerships been clueless and hopeless. Where another garage I went to popular with Porsche fitted a new clutch and when I started the car I said it sounded funny, not right at all with less power, the owner of Tech9 motorsport. I took straight to a DYNO who told me two spark plugs weren’t connected. So learning the hard way garages are useless. Found a 2 guys now who know there business. So happy the 993s will be mint for life. Gotta sell one though.
