FYI In the US 993’s are a lot more expensive than 964’s. They’ll keep on climbing since they’re the last of the air cooled cars. Regarding the driving experience if you drive the 911 3.2 it will feel more raw than a 964. At the end of the day, the 993 is overall a better car than the 964, it’s called evolution !! You can’t go wrong with either one !!

“Arena’” red. Came with 16” wheels as standard. 17” Cup 2 and 18” options... As for torque. I think you’ll find the non Vario’ is a bit more torque’y early on in the rev’ range. That car appears to have metallic paint, 18” wheels, Cruise, rear wiper and looks like the rare A/C option. Most 993’s were quite basically spec’d. You are very right about classic prices too. The bubble has definitely burst! Escort Cosworth owners in the clouds: Take note.

That’s my friend’s car. He sold it to your friend a few months ago. We went to many car shows with our 993s and had some great times. Mine was a polar silver 993 Carrera (1994 pre-Varioram). By the way, the Varioram mechanism can stick, affecting power, particularly at low revs. Worth looking at that first. I hear your friend has spent some serious money on it. Good to hear it’s continuing to be looked after as well as it was before. I have a manual 997 turbo now in meteor grey. My friend is still thinking about which 911 to get next!

A 997 C2s is on the top of my list but will be having a good look at 993 prices when the time comes as I didn't realise these were similar money of late. Good point about "good" vs "polluted" steering feel. I think what a lot of people mistake for steering feel is actually just vibrations from the engine being transmitted through the subframe and into the steering rack. With front wheel drive, forget about any sort of pure steering feel.

A 993 would be a perfect replacement for the 308. If you get a worn or tired one you can do a lot of work updating its parts to get the exact focus and driveability that you want giving you the 911 you want that responds how you want it to.

We had a pristine low mileage 96 993 about a decade ago, in turquoise with light grey leather , best looking car I’ve ever had and a cracking engine. But the offset driving position gave me backache after an hour and at stupid speeds the steering got very light. Wanted a 911 for 30 years at the time ,got rid after 18 months. Hello Jack. Another wonderful and tortured video. I had a 993 (1995 OBD1) and it was the best car I've ever owned...across the board...tracking it dead stock, wild midnight rides...more than any Alfa, more than my 308...my 993 was the best. And while the 964 had the "classic" 911 line, the 993 captures the entire history of Porsche...they are all there in the 993 lines, from the early 356 all the way to the 997. My 964 was an RS America...and to be honest it was a truck because it didn't have power steering. The Euro Carrera RS did, but the American version didn't because of differences in how they cut weight. The rear suspension of the 993 was the perfect solution to all the tail happy tales of the 911. The engine in my 95 993 was 272 hp vs 247 for the RS America. The 1996 993 you drove in this video is harder to get past emissions because of the OBD2 (at least that is what we have in the US). I'm very very happy with my 996.1 C4...but nothing will take the place of the 993. Yes it is heavier than the 996, and the 996 is cheaper to maintain, but the 993 is every so perfectly slightly smaller and purer in lines, and with no bean counter compromises. Mine was Riviera Blue and it came with the original 16" wheels. And they were the absolute best for real world roads, and it made the car more fun to fling around. Like an idiot trend follower I sold those and put on the 17" and they were better on the track...but for canyon carving and freeways and driving in the rain and everything else, Porsche had it right to go with the 16s. Today, everything gets overtired to absurd points. If I could have my 993 back, I'd never ever let it go again. And that is why you probably should not get one, at least if you need the turnover for your videos. But if you are looking for a real long term keeper that will make you smile every single time you drive it, in fact you'll smile every time you just look at it...then the 993 is the way to go. I love Alfas and Fredo is fun...and the V6 has an amazing sound...but it isn't a great car and the money could be better spent. The alternative to the 993 (in my opinion) is the early 1998/1999 996.1. You may have already considered and rejected them (as you once did the 993)...but they would truly be an affordable Porsche to tune and tweak and play with (with great performance). Sell Fredo, get a 996 (must be the 996.1) and ideally keep Influenzo until you truly feel finished with it. A joy watching your videos.

It’s two and a half years later and 993s got even much more expensive. I was looking at 993s this year here in Switzerland and the cheapest was 40k pounds that was crashed (was sold after 2 days on the market), next is 45k totally rusty example with 200k miles that needs 30-40k togeit into a decent conditin. A few weeks one extremely nice spec 993 4 for 50k came up I bought it the next day. It wouldn’t last long on the market, used car dealers would take immediately but the owner would luckily only sell to a private enthusiast. Those 993 in decent condition go now for minimum 60-70k and those with recent mechanical/engine restoration work for 80k+ I am talking about manual coupe only.

Hi Jack, I’d love a 993 to me they’re the most desirable. I really am in love with my TVR though, the mix of the soundtrack, rewarding handling and little reminders that it will kill you if you don’t pay it respect all add up to a great thrill to drive and an event every time you open up the garage door. Hello Jack, I think that by now you’ve probably scratched the air cooled itch pretty thoroughly. It would feel like going over old ground. Because the 993 is relatively refined some owners seem to want to beef them up changing the exhaust, the wheels, flywheel etc to have something more like an RS. Having said that I would love a more aggressive 993 and would love to see where you might take it as a project. You obviously love to get creative and knowing as much as you do about the breed, I think that the 993 would be a brilliant car to devlop.

The 993 looks very elegant, timeless and more anabolic than previous models. Best is a 993 4S with a manual ofcourse :D

I have had 911s, 964s, 993s, 996s & 997s.Personally I would not want an old 993 when a 996 or 997 is cheaper, much nicer inside, & more modern & reliable. Part of the reason that one was cheaper than most will be the burgundy paint & beige leather. Neither are as popular as normal colours. I wouldn't want either. But that is just personal choice.

Also on the idea of cars Jack maybe a z3 coupe ?? Something a bit different, you do see them come up there's a few on eBay now but quite rare on the road other than the body I'm pretty sure they are the same as a normal z3 so easy to sort bits

I’d like to see a 993 on the channel as a replacement for the Ferrari

Very engaging video Jack. I felt like I was in the passenger seat with you and wanted to ask for a go! I’d sell the Alfa before the Influenzo and I almost think you’d love the Ferrari with the Alfa’s ‘Busso’ engine transplanted into it. That would be sacrilege of course and probably technically a non starter!

Great car Jack. Would be interesting to see an even rarer Porsche from that era. Why not replace the Ferrari with a 968..?!

Tis the season to sell Motorbikes and Cabriolets ... I would guess that changes to 'buy Cabriolets' around March ... ?

Clasics comming down in value is always a good thing imho. I think the ev revolution will have a big influence on prices going forward as well. We will see how things go.

Totally agree with the wheels Jack. I have a black 993 which had original Turbo Twists. I really hated the way the left wheel spun one way while the right wheel spun the other way, due to the twist. I recently fitted a set a set of 18" Carrera II wheels, much better looking, especially with the big red brakes. I'm about to fit a set of Recaro Classic Pole Poitions, with the herringbone insert to brighten up the black interor. Tim (Sydney).

The 964 is a great car, but the 993, particularly that one, in red is amazing.

I saw my first 993 turbo in that colour and thought Porsche just can’t improve on that. I was right, they changed the whole evolution concept with the total redesign of the 996, which I hated when it first came out. I saw a turbo with a twin rear spoiler and it was the first time I liked the 996. But being water cooled, just didn’t seem like a 911.

I grew up with these and watching Bad Boys made me love this car as a kid. I hope they stay at a decent price range within the next 10 years.
