WHEN YOU FIND THE CAR YOU LIKE:
Before you even look at the car and start falling in love with it, make sure the title is clean and also make sure that the name of the person selling you the car matches the owner of the car.
You also need to know if the car was salvaged. The title will show an S if it was salvaged. Salvage or flooded cars could still be good, but check them thoroughly. Ask for the history of it.
Ask if they have maintenance records and/or check carfax.
WHEN YOU GO SEE THE CAR
Look at the car during the day. Never at night.
Look for the obvious. Damaged: panels, bumpers, wheels and roof.
Check if the air suspension holds. Wait as long as you can when looking at a car to see if the car goes down. Make sure the car sits even.
Check the edges of the panels to see if they have paint residue.
Make sure the gaps are even.
Check that the windshield has a Mercedes Benz engineer’s signature and the rest of the windows have the Mercedes logo and barcode. All of the windows should have the same numbers.
Original windshield has solar coating for UV protection and heat load reduction. It also has acoustic dampening technologies that reduce noise in the cabin.
Look for the MB name on headlights, rear lights and side mirror lights.
Check the inside of the wheels for damages or weld marks.
Look at the tires, they could be very expensive to replace. If they are wearing unevenly, they could have a balance or alignment issue or the car may need a suspension job. The car could have been in an accident.
WHEN YOU GO INSIDE:
Check the rubber around windows and doors for paint residue and that they are firmly in place.
Make sure you can see the rescue card on the driver side pillar (pillar B) and also on the gas door.
Check that the latches on the pillars and the bolts holding the doors are in place.
See if the door sills are worn evenly. If they are new, there is a possibility that it crashed on that side. Just ask why.
The doors have a code engraved on the bottom, look for extra paint and if they are even there.
Look under the mats and under the truck cover for moisture.
Connect the car to a scanner. Scanners are nowadays cheap. It is very important to run a test. The computer could have been reset just before you went to see the car.
If the car has the check engine light on, do not buy the car. Ask them to get it fixed then you can come back for it.
WHEN YOU OPEN THE HOOD:
Open the hood, look for oil on antifreeze leaks. Take the covers off. If the car is too clean, it may be suspicious. Check the wiring, mice like to chew on wires.
Check all fluids, make sure they look clean and at the correct levels.
If the engine is too clean, check the engine bay again after you went for a drive. Then look for leaks again. And also check for burning smells. Check the fluid levels again as well.
Check the oil cap, if it has a milky liquid, it means the coolant is getting into the oil side of the engine, so there is a coolant leak.
Look for coolant corrosion on the cooling system.
WHEN YOU DRIVE THE CAR:
Position everything for you, the mirrors, the seat, the steering wheel.
Make sure you are in a quiet place and nobody talks while you look at the car and turn things on. AC, heat, radio, navigation, seats, windows, sunroofs, every electronic there is in the car. With a used car there may be something that does not work, but you need to know.
Bring the suspension up and down.
Do not have the radio on while driving, and try not to have conversations while you are driving, stay focused.
When driving the car, check the brakes and make sure it drives straight and smooth.
Drive for at least 10 miles.
Make sure the autostop/start works. You could have a bad secondary and/or main battery.
Make sure cruise control works, with modern cars there could be a number of things that went wrong and it could get expensive.
AFTER YOU ARE SATISFIED WITH ALL THAT YOU HAVE CHECKED, If you can, take the car to a shop to get checked out by a professional. They will charge you for it, but it's worth it.

Thanks, Jose! Very detailed and accurate information for evaluating buying a used S Class where I've owned 4 different S class cars from W220, 221 and W222.

Hello Steve. Thank you so much for your comment. I’m glad you like the video. What can you share about your experience with your cars? Is there anything else we should look for?

@@josecitomarin Your videos on the sacrificial harnesses was extremely helpful where I replaced all 4 CPS, camshaft solenoid magnets and added the sacrificial harnesses to the CPS's and camshaft solenoid's. This is my 4th S class starting with the W220, W222 and the W221 I have now. I've experienced replacement of the Airmatic shocks on the W220 and W221 but that is about all the issues and I perform regular maintenace. I also have an '06 SLK55 AMG (R171) where I've done work on it.
