I was given a personal tour of the Marion facility. They made 49' and below boats. They made the Jeanneau right side by side the Beneteau on the same production line. Same workers. Same materials. I bet they regret closing that plant 6 months prior to Covid.

Funny, but I don't want Polar Seal or Sailing Beaver? Hmmm, they are fine Beneteau O40's, but...Nah! Hey, they CAN go downwind which is NOT over-rated! Hahaha (Comment for YT algorithm.) Chris- you killin' it wif content, brah. I can cheer for the 'Hometown Team' (USVI's) with thumbs & notes. It's cheaper than...well- anything!

The only bad part of this is the 393's at $100K or less are almost all over in Europe. The prices for these are much higher in North America. Some of those brokers are totally high asking only $20K less than new for a 20 year old boat. Absolutely insane what some of these guys are asking which is sad because they are nice boats and I would consider them more if they weren't so absurdly priced. But do the research, Give them an educated low ball offer and see if they bite. The worst they will do is say no. There are only 3 options they have, Say no, Say yes or counter offer. If they counter you have a chance at getting them to a reasonable price. That is the way with all boats really.

I know those modern boats are fine and I know a couple people that have them. But there so ugly. Just not my thing. I feel the same way about catamarans I appreciate what that can do also but I'm not interested. In any case I do appreciate what you are doing here. I'm a classic guy the best hull designs were between 1975-1985 in my opinion and there are many many old salt's with 10's of thousands of miles under there belt that would agree with me. I'd like to see you make content covering these older boats.

Unfortunately I'm like you and although I appreciate those vessels they are not for me, having over 200,000 nautical miles sailed I'm very specific in what I look for and what works for me. Now I wish sometimes I was a do it yourself guy and about 30 years younger as picking up and older vessel and spending a few years reffiting it might have been an option if I was just starting out

I have a SS38 Sparkman and Stevans 1982 Catalina. I feel your love of these boats. I have 4 shrouds on each side plus fore and aft stays. Thats 10 shroulds holding up that mast. But I love the new 40 Beneteau. My boat is tricked out and fully paid for ,hard to sell it an go bigger.

Usually 15 or less, occasionally you can find a bank to finance one that's 20 years old

Why are there so few motorsailers for sale in 40 foot range? Is it not a thing anymore, since these full time sailers are pretty capable to motor distance as needed? I am really on the fence about sail versus motor, but I really like the idea of harnessing the wind for power. That’s why I wonder about motorsailers and their viability?

So a motor sailor most would say is simply a powered vessel that happens to have a sail although often it's about useless.however with a sailboat your true power is harnessed from the wind while having a very capable motor as well

@@ChasingLatitudes seems like the shape of the 2000 plus sail boats have moved more towards a motorsailer shape with longer waterline (as you point out), a greater distance from the waterline to the deck, and a more squared off rear. These are more like a “boat” and less like a “spoon” as some older sailboats look like. Excuse my lack of terminology, but I have sailed before and truly enjoy it. Spent some time on the water In the Bahamas this winter and I can definitely see myself anchored out there somewhere. The other topic I consider joining your website for, I live in North Atlantic area and want to use the boat as a live aboard during winter months, perhaps pay for a slip somewhere between the Chesapeake and Florida, there seems like a massive shortage of a dock to leave the boat as a home away from home. It’s quite discouraging to consider buying a boat if there is no place to harbor it safely.

Motor sailors went out of fashion the same decade they came fashion in the 70's. If you are trying to reduce running costs a motor sailor is not going to do that for you. Their hulls are inefficient for sailing or motoring. And the "savings' you would think you will get from the extra drive of the sails with the motor never really materialized. They were a fad that happily died 30 years ago. But you can still find GulfStar motor sailors out there for sail if that is really your jam.
