Last week, we explored a 1987 Mikelson 50 sailboat. Known for their luxurious teak woodwork, these Taiwanese boats have a rich history in the sailing world, and are loved by many. Only 18 were built in Taiwan for Mikelson in San Diego, and we were lucky enough to find out sitting in our back yard.
You told us to hold out, to not buy the boat, because it was too far gone and we could do better. We didn't listen and we put in an offer on the boat anyway. Today, we share with you that offer, and the outcome.

I have never heard of a bank spending money on a boat to get more money for it. They usually put it up for auction, sell it to the high bidder, and move on.

I agree. Yeah the guy still owes well over $100k on the boat and they left it in his name and started doing work on it for him. Lol 🤷‍♀️

We aren't lying and we aren't misinformed. Now I don't understand the inner workings of what the heck is going on between the "owner" and the bank who handled the loan, but the owner isn't putting money into it, and our brokerage (I'm a broker and our brokerage- a small brokerage at that) is dealing directly with the bank, and we moved the boat and have it sitting in a marina listed at $139k, though I know they will sell for less. I've NEVER heard of a bank putting money into a boat, but I can assure you that this one did. We convinced them to pay off the debt to the shipyard where it sat as well, and they opted to do some light work to the boat in order to try to recoup some money back. I agree that isn't normal, but it's what they did. I am NOT misinformed. and I am not lying. @Rovingdog628

If you’re willing to pay the price and do the work necessary, don’t let anyone tell you that it’s not worth it. I’m a boat builder and people think I’m crazy to put in so much time on a build when I can just go buy one already built. It’s my passion and when I’m done, I’m a part of that boat and not just the owner of a boat. 😊

The way I see it, when the boat is DONE (ok, “done” is a silly word to use on any boat but I did it) it’ll be pretty good to go on major things for a while and will be a very solid boat again for years to come. And we don’t care about the end value. The boat would be for us, and family and business and life…. It’s all for that. Thanks so much for watching!!!

Hey guys, I really don't understand the obsession we all have of owning some old William Garden designed boat out of Taiwan, I had a Formosa years ago, which is basically what the Mikelson 50 is, leaky teaky! No matter what background in DIY you have in restoring boats, building electrical or playing with epoxy and fiberglass, you must decide one very important part of your lives, and believe me this is very important, "Do you want to hang out like a load of other RU-vid content makers providing videos on DIY, or would you rather spend your perfect aged time sailing the world, like Erik Aanderaa of NBJS"? I get it, it seems cool, "been there done that", but you guys are definitely around 35 going on 40 years old, get a boat around $100K, with minimum DIY, and SAIL!! There are hundreds of them out there! Forget the '80's Formosa, Vagabond, Garden designed leaky teaky's, you'll be playing with powertools rather than pulling lines down in the French Polynesians! But, if you're goal is to build up a charter business down in the Florida Keys area, which is where I use to sail back in the early '80's, then go to a bank with your deposit money and get some new inexpensive marine plywood epoxy sailing boats to charter for the sunsets. In fact, the government would fund your project with a SBA loan since all the idiot Dem's are throwing out our tax money to every Joe Blow with an idea. Put together a Business Plan with a strong executive summary and submit it, they'll provably go for it., up to $5m. Sweating over that piece of crap isn't wroth your time!

You are not wrong my friend, but the heart wants what the heart wants. With a little love and a lot of bad words, blood, sweat, and tears we would have what we want. We want one boat for the rest of our lives. Chartering is just a way to stay upright with her. Every boat is a loss unless it makes you money.

Yeah we’re pretty settled on what we want, unfortunately, but also fortunately. This boat has it. I just look at it like this- once we put the money and time into the boat, we have a very lovely boat for many years to come. I’d rather hunker down now and do the work while we have the time and money than buy something we don’t want and then upgrade later and still end up with the same issues.

I am 77 and my project days are past, but one has to make their own decisions. My favorite RU-vid channel is "Project Atticus" They started with little money, bought a junk 32' boat for 5k about 6 years ago, spent well over a year making her seaworthy, then sailed the Caribbean seeing some of the most scenic places in Mexico, Cuba, and Central America. I and many others subscribed when they were searching for the right boat. Between working odd jobs in marinas, RU-vid, and Patreon, they made enough money to buy Atticus II a far better 40' boat. I don't remember the builders of either boat, but they interviewed some long time sailors, and experts before selecting the new boat. I have not missed an episode since the pandemic started.

I know what you mean about finding the right boat. My last boat was a raider 33. As I get "older" it got to big.l was looking for my last boat. I was looking for very simple small on trailer, and I found it. A precision 18.i had to go from Mississippi to Miami to get it but it's in my yard and very much happy with it. Thanks I will keep an eye out for yal because I still love to check out boats.

As a seasoned investor (of many things from Real Estate to cars, to antiques to boats, cars, motorcycles) I think after seeing your previous walk thru video, that your offer is absolutely fair. -- Don't take the "laughed at" personally. They'll come to a realization later on. Make the same offer after someone (from the bank?) checks it out OR take video and pictures (printed) and send it in with the offer along with a letter describing it's un-seaworthiness and estimated rehab cost. --- If it's turned down again, wait a couple of weeks and send in that SAME offer. MEANWHILE....keep searching as if you are still looking. Your "perfect for you boat" is out there and it will pop at you at the right time. Even if it's this one. Don't force anything. Thanks Nelson! Yeah we actually did that with the bank. It complicates matters slightly that I work for the brokerage that is dealing with that bank, so… I won’t get into that but it actually doesn’t help me. And honestly, we’ve been looking for a few years, so we haven’t just started. I know everyone keeps saying to wait and keep looking and that it’ll pop up at the “right time” but the truth is that we’re running out of time. This window of time we have is only so big, and we’ve already extended it. If we don’t have a boat ready to go by next year sometime, the lifelong dream and plan is off the table for us. That or we just don’t have kids. Either one is a big decision and majorly life changing. We’re backed into a corner now and the right boat better start showing itself or we don’t get one.

@@TheSirensLog Having dealt with brokerages in both the SE US and here in the BVI, having purchased 4 different cruisers over the past 10 years (my upgrade and the kids keep growing up and moving out onto their own) I think the same rule applies. Older cruising boats in solid but not pretty condition sell for 50% of the original asking price, and as a broker I'm sure you see that as well. There is also the "derelict" formula in the SE US - find an interesting boat, talk to the yard manager and offer the owner exactly the amount owing to the yard...you'll likely get it once the boat has been there more than two years. My examples, and all of these I simply cleaned and loaded and drove away with no significant work: Morgan 461 - asking 135k, paid 65 in BVI. Catalina 30 - ask 30k, paid 9k in Savannah,Ga Islander Freeport 38 - ask 75k, paid 38k, New Orleans another Islander Freeport 38 - ask 65k, paid 42k in Pensacola...BUT that included the owners pulling and doing a full engine rebuild as part of the deal. Yes, all of these have had significant work afterward to change them from bare cruisers to comfortable, but keep looking for those with solid glass hulls and decks, skeg hung rudders, engines easy to rebuild and a boat you're happy to be seen in. Rigging, canvas work, rewiring, replumbing, adding solar/lithium, electric galleys and watermakers, will keep you busy for years as you make your home a happy one. Just don't make the mistake of thinking what you sink into it to make it "perfect" for you will ever translate to a much bigger resale value. Boats are homes, happy travel places...not investments.

This is something we try to explain to people- that boats are not investments. I deal with it a lot as a broker with people expecting to buy a boat as an investment to use as an Airbnb or something, and even with sellers who want more for their boats because they’re adding up the maintenance they’ve had to do. It just doesn’t work that way and we know that well. Unfortunately with the yard, the bank is paying what they owe for the boat to sit there, even though it still belongs to the owner.

i live in Vancouver, but kept our power boat at Canoe Cove Marina north of Victoria. I often stayed weekends on the boat doing maintenance. William Garden was quite old at the time, but he lived in a small home on a very small island across a channel from my boat. I would sometimes see Mr Garden in his small boat coming across to get to a store for provisions. He was at that time a small man, but still with a huge reputation in the marine industry. I hope you can find one of his boats.

Your enthusiasm is infectious. I wouldn't be too concerned about a dodgy rudder repair. It dosen't matter too much if it fills with water as long as you eventually get on to it. To do it properly you should split it in half and check the condition of the metal inside then glue it back together. Preferably with it removed from the boat. Its a big job and the vendor is never going to do that. As long as it works it will be good for a year or so. The leaking rotting Coach House is possibly the biggest issue. If the Bank were to cost that out they may get quite a shock. It should be costed at shipwright rates. regardless of who actually does it . I do hope you get it but yes it is a big project. I have been looking at a similar boat in Australia, Formosa Peterson 46 but for me the renovation cost is going to be prohibitive and I don't have much free time . I will cool my heals for a while and watch you guys.

I wasn’t sure if I was right in thinking that way, but we’ve now had a few comments that make me think I could probably get away with that. Yeah, I really don’t think the bank has any idea what they’re looking at. But then they list it, they’ll start to see, I think.

Yep! I agree!! I need to go find which person made that comment. I mean, It’s not really a foreign concept- as a broker, we write up purchase sale agreements on every sale which is essentially that! Then after survey and sea trial there are negotiations. This would essentially be the same, but kinda in a different way. Should have thought of it myself.

I think the bank is going to be tough to convince (because the bank see’s $$ & not the boat how it truly is) of the realistic value of the boat given its’ systems, sails, fixtures, fittings, keel, hull, engine, generator, electrics, deck, stanchions, wheel-house, windows and lots more - are in the state they’re in - and so I think probably 1 of 2 things will happen; you’ll either (& not in order) 1) Find another boat which ticks the most if not all of your requirments boxes which is likely far closer to being “ready to go”, listed at a far more reasonable price, saving you $ and time in work over the Mickelson - or, 2) You’ll reach a somewhat comfortable/uncomfortable compromise agreement (as your heart is partly set) with the bank on the Mikelson which may be perhaps a little more than you want to pay to acquire it - which will take time, perseverance and effort in negotiations. In the long run, you’ll have a beautiful, asset of boat either way - but that’s my gut. By the way, if the boat was mine, the number one job I’d want doing - is the ridding those roaches!! Hate them!

I believe the designer was William Garden. He died a few years ago, but donated all his architectural drawings to the Mystic Seaport museum in Connecticut. If the drawings are there, they will print copies for a nominal fee. They had eight of the eleven drawings for my boat, a Truant 37 pilothouse. Good luck.

Thanks Paul! Yes, and the list of William Garden designs is online and easily accessible. Nice to know they will print them though. How cool. Big blueprint size and everything??? One spec sheet said WG was the designer, but one of the owners told us he wasn't. We will investigate.

Yes, you can get addicted to boats. Work hard for a couple of years, safe all your money, buy your tools for a restoration and after saving a 100.000 dollar come back. Never ever borrow money for a boat. Being independent from banks gives another dimension to life

I’m working through one of our other brokers so he has to be realistic about what he presents to the bank. It also doesn’t work in my favor that I work for the brokerage dealing with the bank.

In NZ a substantial refit of a vessel this size would set you back 300K in Materials, components, Yard fees, Professional Services etc (even on DIY projects its hard to do it all yourself) that would include the rig but not sails. its likely to be substantially cheaper in the US. One thing about this type of project is that the cost is spread over time and at the end of it you know the boat and its systems back to front.

Just for fun, there is a 1975 Boothbay Challenger, 58 feet long, in Maine listed at $109K. If you want to charter, it is a larger boat with a better layout - and it appears in much better condition. Made in the USA by craftsmen.

Yep as a broker I've dealt with bank owned boats and as you said some pencil pusher looks up values, i can't believe a surveyor put 130 on that. A good friend of mine bought a Katrina boat a Hudson force 50. I thought he bit off more than he could chew but he had worked in yards before and rebuilt it himself. Was very nice but still a little project till perfect. But he did sail it from New Orleans to Tacoma WA. My advice is look hard for a deal in New England boats are just so much nicer. Check in with Mass Maritime and other nautical training schools to find out about what they have as donated in inventory.

That’s true. We are half planning to go up north soon and poke around, we just have to be careful with that as well because we don’t want to spend all our money looking when we could be here working and saving it. Haha there’s a balance in there somewhere. We are lucky this one is at our home yard, so very convenient, and our brokerage is dealing with it which actually makes it more complicated. I know the boat is bad off, but I think it’s very doable and not nearly the project people are making it out to be. Thanks for the comment! We will likely offer more.

You offered a very good price. If the bank has a problem with that, turn around and move on. There are too many problems on this ship. If the bank contacts you after a certain time, just offer 10,000. Even that's a good price for the bank. Banks are rich and have endless money. You don't have infinite time. Keep looking. Someone mentioned a Bristol 45.5s I'd be interested in.

Great project, however, the first thing is the bottom has too many coats of paint on it and it may be covering up some problems hiding under it, if you are going to really renovate this boat, remove the bottom paint and put barrier coat on the bottom. good luck with your renovation going to be a long project but you are young!

That’s it! Hahah Yep. I think we’d put around $125k into it by the time we’re feeling good and settled in. Another $50k if we wanted to really make it amazing. Teak deck…. New mast… it’s all possible! That’s why we want the right boat. We don’t want to sell and upgrade later. We won’t. We need the right one now so we can do all that crazy work and make one boat ideal for us, and then keep that boat forever if we can.

Didn't I tell you that not less than 100k, well yes, that value is just that. You must rely on the offer for major repairs, engine, sails, rigging. the rest, including navigation instruments, today with a tablet and navionics and an AIS in radio communications TODAY, THE MISCELLANIA WILL ARRIVE. THE ISLAND TRADER'S OPTION IS ALSO GOOD AND I HAD ALREADY TAKEN A LOOK AT THAT BOAT. VERY GOOD

I noticed a full keel and full rudder. . . . . . . She looks like a Morgan . I like the stern line going around the frame of the stern . I epoxied our wood work 👍 Great wood work on both sides . She's worth it 👍 Your prop being protected by the full keel and rudder is protected 👍 We also made leather headboards for the bare bulkheads .

You'll notice that a boat that's made out of wood has a mast that goes all the way to its keel for leverage since it's the keel and the mast together that create that leverage that go leverage. Wood boats need water otherwise they die.

I just watched this video, on your channel. Boy, folks are 'tough' out there now a days! I enjoyed the video and actually it was your 'talking' that drew my interest. It is pretty difficult to explain your circumstances and backgrounds with out talking. I was offered a great deal on a Hudson Force 50 years ago in San Diego and always regretted not buying it. So I am very interested in watching your journey looking for that type of sailboat (not a power boat, sorry sir). Cheers and with your attitudes there is no way you will not succeed.

Thank you!!! Nice to see a positive comment every once on a while. Sorry to hear about you not getting the Hudson force! We don’t want regrets about it either and we’ve worked up to this point in life where we can buy the boat we really want, on a smaller budget than initially expected, but with the right boat an opportunity, we can get the boat and do a lot and continue work over the next year or two. This one is obviously a lot of work but it’s not the worst. The video after this shows a Formosa 51 in significantly worse condition. That boat was a lot more than we wanted to get into. We will be busy this year with some travels and looking at other boats and may put in another offer on this one next year.

Michael dropped a big oak tree on my boat as well. It destroyed a 22 Catalina next to mine but fortunately my 17 proline was laid up strong and it was all damaged that I could repair. The odd part is I’m in Virginia. The center of the storm got small and moved all the way from the gulf just to drop a tree on my boat.

I like your viewpoint and the way you view a project boat is refreshing. My wife and I have cruised from Pensacola to the Keys , and in the Bahamas down into the Exumas. We had boats from a Compac 16 up to a 34. All needed work and we loved knowing the boat systems stem to stern. I think that's what you are doing , and to have a well found boat to visit the world is a great thing! Keep at it!

We actually have another video after this one where I sailed it around to the marina and Hal put his foot down and doesn’t want it. I’m the one buying the boat- I sold my house to buy it- which was the loose plan for over a decade. BUT Hal is my mechanic so he needs to love whatever I buy and it’ll be our boat. We’ve contemplated circling back to the Mikelson, but we have some things to see first.

Another year or two and that boat is worth the cost of a big dumpster and the Sawzall to get it in the dumpster. 30k is generous. Bankers are not sailors. Send them a list of actual known needs with costs and a lists of what ifs. Sails and a repower 40-60k easy... hidden hull problems behind that new bottom paint? Oh well. Good luck!

Hi Guys, I think $30,000.00 is probably a fair market price for a boat that is 46 years old. You seem to be more than capable of doing the work yourselves. Please be very careful about falling madly for an old boat. The condition of that boat is quite poor. Banks know as much about boats as my left foot knows about Moon Landings so don't expect much in the way of compromise from a bank. The person that valued that boat at $130,000.00 was way out of whack. Good luck with your search. I am a former professional marine surveyor for two of the worlds largest Class Societies and have owned five boats of my own as well as being a ship master for over twenty years. The last sailboat I owned took me 3 years to find as I spent many hours traveling and inspecting some terrible boats despite numerous reports from so called surveyors and owners that professed the condition of boats that were just junk. I once drove six hours to inspect a prospective boat and when I saw the outside and general condition I spent 10 minutes on the boat and walked off discussed with the information I had been given. Just take your time and eventually the right boat will come along. Good luck

You are right, 30kUSD is a price adequate for the condition and market interest in this boat. Just ask the bank: And how many offers have you had? How many offers are you getting a week? Is there a higher one? You do realize that if you put the boat in the water, you're more likely to lower the price? The key is not to get emotionally attached to this boat. There are a lot of boats.

Come survey this thing!!! Hahaha I think the surveyor was throwing a number based on the assumption that everything works, which, I’m not sure how he can even do that. I know he did the original survey when the guy got the loan, so probably an effort there to cover his as s, which I understand, as it’s not his fault he can’t check everything on the hard. He is a master surveyor for sailboats in our area, but yeah- I think it’s just in a weird situation all around right now.

Buy a smaller or cheaper boat, and head to Grenada, Trinidad, Guatemala, and Panama, Sea of Cortez /Mexico, and San Andres Columbia, there are boats that aren´t even listed on the market. Due to extensive work, but comes with a bargain pricetag. So if you buy a sailboat around 20-30 grand. its a smalls step to take you to the destinations. Don´t take loans, if you cant afford it, dont buy it. Be self sustainable. As Sailing UMA said. "dont buy a coach". No loans, no debts. Thats one key before heading offshore or circumnavigating. If you need to finance a boat, by selling everything you own, then thats necessary to stay out of loans and debts.

There’s a couple sailboats at Dentons boat yard on bushy park rd in goose creek South Carolina. I work next door at that facility. I know one is listed for sale but there’s others that’s been there for a minute, I heard that that boat yard was closing down . Not sure. There’s two Dentons , one In Charleston and this one on bushy park rd. It’s on the Wando river.

Some one at the bank doesn’t understand he concept of “sunk cost” . Your doing the right thing with an offer that reflects reality. There will be the right boat out there , this time of year you should investigate boats in regions that have boats put on the hard and stored for the winter. People drop the asking price if they are tired if the boat and want to get out from under the cost of storage and yard fees . Many have to keep paying the slip fee at the marina to keep it for the next season too. These boats are often in nice shape as they don’t get the Southern sun baked look and because they are hauled every fall the bottoms are in good shape , many storage yards offer bottom work discounts to keep the core crew busy during winter to prep the bottom for anifouling before launch. Check the bug Great Lakes yacht centers for fresh water boats too , you may find some beautiful boats power and sail . Best wishes on your journey!

Long story, I got a really good herbal company herbs. In a few days all was gone and I haven’t had a problem since. I do get a head cold sometimes but I clear it up with this companies echinacea and Vitimans C. American owned and operated company In Utah. Natures sunshine products. I can even send you the phone number. It been selling herbs for years. In house production and quality control. About the only herbal product that is American made now days. Really dood vitamins and minerals also.

One thing to consider about older boats. They have what I would call a value ceiling no matter what condition they are in. A 1987 boat refit to new in all respects may sell for that value ceiling, but what it brings will not be anywhere near the cost of the refit. Consider that when looking. A boat like the one you are looking at likely is worth $150K-$175K for a perfect boat. One thing, there is a huge difference between owning and working on a small open boat and a 50' sailboat. From listening to your earlier video on this boat one thing that struck me was that you don't really know what you don't know about boats like this one. I say that as a person who has owned larger sailboats for 30+ years. Get a survey before making an offer on a boat like this and then get price estimates from yards for the work you can't do yourselves based on the survey. Any offer you make must include contingencies that allow you to back out of the offer if the survey shows major issues you were not aware of. I assume you have considered where you will keep the boat. It can be hard to find a slip for a 50' boat. Many marinas have wait lists. Don't buy a boat until you have a firm place to keep it because transient costs will kill your budget quickly. You mentioned Panama City. It was hard to find rates there for long term dockage, so I am guessing $1K up per month for a 50' boat. As far as the Island Trader trawler goes, the big issue is the engine(s). Repowering a 40' trawler is going to cost major money. A friend paid over $40K to replace one engine on his 35' Egg Harbor. Anything over 5,000-6,000 hours on the engine(s) would be a concern to me. If you are looking at a powerboat of that size you need an engine survey in addition to the standard survey.

350k would be the ceiling. Formosa 51s and Hudson Force 50s go for that now. Granted, not many of these boats have sold in the last 20 years because they only made 18. Some have been lost to storms, grounding and disrepair. Seeing as this boat is very similar to the Formosa and Hudson's, I think this is a very fair comparison. You have to think, A new boat this size would be a multi million dollar boat.

Yeah, we have great resources here. We know a lot of people, are good friends with the shipyards, I’m a local broker and know marina owners, etc. That certainly helps, and we know we always have the option to keep it on the hood if push ever came to shove. Florida has no anchorage laws. The Marine Trader is the trawler version of the island Trader. The Marine Trader we’d be looking at is one I know well it’s actually one of my listings and it’s absolutely gorgeous and it’s in almost completely original interior condition, very well preserved. Had a refit in 2021 so lots of new on the exterior all the way around. The boat has a lot going for it but with a price tag to match, at $150k. The engines are good to go and I have no concerns with them, plus a survey was just done on it and the owner is doing even more work to make her better. That boat is a dream. Honestly, I’m sure we won’t buy it because we do want sail, but it would be great to feature it on the channel. You’re right about the Mikelson. We’d have to get another survey done but I’m going to give them some time to sit on it a little while longer.

Siren and Captain Hal, This is a beautiful Vintage Motor Sailer. I am a very qualified Welder Mechanic ElectricalContractor a Ham Radio Operator and Pilot.,Pilot. I also have a Small Power boat,which I completely re built. This boat is a Huge amount of work and with the visable amount of water intursion it's a big risk! Looking at the Mast Mount into the bilge, all of the floor boards would need to be removed to see exactly what going on in the Bilge. That would expose all of the wiring and systems which you can not see with it like it is. A consevative Restoring Estimate would be well over $150,000 dollars,maybe more? I know your both very capable persons to restore this boat but with the time and work to do it,would your investment pay off in the long run? With water damage and rot that is a major concern, but again with the unknown factor of the systems and wiring and mechanical not being able to be tesed thats is a Big Gamble. What you will find in the Bilge is totally Unknown! I would NOT take a project on like this! I wish you the Best in finding a boat which is sea worthy and doesn't have these problems.

Just something to think about folks, the Great Lakes. The boating season is short so the boats tend not to get beat to death and they are in fresh water. That said, you would have to get it to Florida which will either be through the St. Lawrence or on a flat bed truck, if it can even be done due to height. Just something to think about. Excellent video guys. Really like your overview. Clearly you're both very qualified (more than most out there that are already sailing). Wonderful editing and overview of your journey so far. I hope the best for you guys on getting this boat. Agree with you 100% that the boat shouldn't go back into the water in the current condition. Have you considered a Catamaran to purchase. It's all about the room and being comfortable. As you know when living onboard, you spend about 80% of your time @ Anchor or tied to a pier. It's a beautiful boat, the master cabin is great size. Your offer of $30K, knowing what you know now was a fair offer. Most of the systems onboard are old and need to be replaced (so if the bank/owner are going on that for additional value l, it's pennies on the dollar) I would get back to the bank and tell them you're still interested and that you're also actively searching and ready to buy within the next 30 days (have you checked on insurance yet? I know I’m the picky one and it’s been my dream for literally decades, (of course so has buying property in Puerto rico and GBU seems to be a few steps ahead of us even though I’ve already been down to see property) but my dream may not be Hals dream. Apparently it kinda is, though, so that’s lucky, but I know there are some things he’d do different. Ultimately, I just want us to meet in the middle and feel good about whatever we buy because it may be our home for many years. If you don’t feel good about the boat, and you don’t love it, you don’t care for it the same. The boat needs to be loved. We have about $100k to work with at the moment. Can’t put the whole wad into the purchase, obviously, or we don’t have anything left for the shipyard or the work. It’s tough and tight! We have until spring to find something for us, so we’re not super desperate yet! Hahaha

When I hauled out I used a mallet and a couple of wide, shallow fishtailed gouges to scoop out the gel coat blisters almost entirely eliminating the need for grinding and sanding.

@TheSirensLog we changed the name of our boat 🥰 We have found that a lot of people change the name of their boat 👍 Serenity was the name of the Spaceship, it was a TV series and was amazing but unfortunately didn't take off until after they cancelled it. It has the actor from "Castle" and "The Rookie"

You two are doing what I planned to do twenty years ago. But like most plans , life happened. I’ve seen a few nice live aboards on Yachting World for less than a hundred grand but few of them are in the States. That boat needs way too much work to be worth much more than $30K In any case best wishes.

Yeah, I know the feeling of life happening as well. I had a long delay in my late twenties through basically this year, and I’m 36. No kids yet, but if we’re going to do this, we have to do it now. Pretty much forget about bank owned anything they get more on tax right offs by keeping it. Keep looking lots of boats on and coming on the market especially if you can do the work yourself. Awesome video!

The cruel reality is that the bank doesn't want to get rid of the boat like people think. Banks are not looking forward to lose money. They like to make money. If they have possession of the boat, it's probably because it was put as a guarantee for a loan and the bank won't let it go for nothing. It actually can't. It just can't get anything from the borrower and liquidate at insignificant prices to recuperate the loan. Their job is actually to get the most they can.

I am alreafy subscribed to too many sailing channels...but ok...one more. Subscribed....Shi is a lovely boat for sure, and can be restored. I never for a minute thought you would not be able to do the work, either. You are correct, it would be a lot of work, but worth doing if the starting price is right....which as a number is something only you would know for yourselves. The bank knows how to get hold of you...if it is meant to be your boat it will come back to you. I think you are onto a good thing...if they can prove everything works then it's worth more for sure. Keep looking.... Nice video...well done.

I'd disagree with the boat acronyms. If you don't maintain a house , it will fall to pieces just like a boat.

Not as fast. 2 years will destroy a boat. 2 years on a house its most likely fine. Saltwater is hell and gets into every nook and krany of a boat. You can never get it all out. I let a boat sit in a friends yard for 2 years and it needs a complete refit. The engine needed attention and took 3 days and a lot of money to get running again. The boat needs a full rewire. The only part of the boat that was sound was the hull. I let a house sit closed up for 10 years. It just need a new AC unit and some rodent entry points closed up.

Thank you Tom!! I agree. If you don’t love the boat you’re pouring all your money into, corners get cut and you don’t treat it the same. Gotta love it. We had the survey at the time of filming these episodes, but to make another offer later we’d absolutely have to have our own survey done. Their survey values the boat quite high.

If you are really set on this boat, or any used boat, you pay a professional surveyor to go over every inch of that boat, all systems inside and out. With the results you receive you won’t have to guess at the work, and dollars, needed to get this boat back in the water. If the owner(s) can’t certify the boat is seaworthy, you will not be able to insure the boat. And the value of the boat becomes the salvage value only, far cry from 130K. I’m not saying you can’t sail a boat that is not insured, but God forbid you have an accident where you are responsible, and you will lose everything. Use the survey for any boat to your advantage and good luck!

Liability insurance isn’t as difficult to get, and we do have a survey and did at the time of filming the video prior to this. Most of our findings in the boat were based off that survey that we went through extensively. However, the systems weren’t tested on the survey

Yeah, we’d love to find a deal, and we do have some good insider deals on the table, honestly, but it’s more about getting the right boat in a way we can afford it. The Mikelson would be a deal if we could get it cheap because of the systems we can likely get going again.
