The classic Gaggia with its art deco styling emphasised to me how industrial products used to be designed to be just as beautiful as they were functional, really enjoyed seeing these machines are kept alive and we get to see it

This was absolutely delightful. For some reason, I didn't expect that you would hook these up and actually prepare coffee from these machines! Not because of an inability to do so, but because of their preservation. But then I thought, what good is a vintage espresso machine that can't serve it's purpose?? So! When can we expect an "Ultimate Vintage Espresso Technique" video to drop? 😂

I agree with this. These machines were designed for commercial use and it would be a disservice to have them as display only machines. What would be really cool would be to make a museum of these machines in which you could have someone be able use each one. That would be coffee geeks dream.

Yes. The best way to honor great machinery is to use it. Vintage automobiles, for instance, have components designed for use. Same with vintage steam engines on trains. Plus, engineering and craftsmanship of these requires specific know-how and elevates human agency, which we're getting away from rapidly as computers and robots dominate today's assembly lines.

I feel the same about vintage cars and firearms. Yes, I want to preserve them, but using them is part of that preservation. Im not going to drag one through the mud, but it's nice to break one out in the right conditions.

Yea, my reaction too! It is the same with vintage cars & guitars! People love to dump money into them for the love of the project and the joy to use them after their “finished” (they are never finished!). I’m in love with old film cameras in a similar way.

Supply and demand. The demand for espresso machines is relatively low, and for vintage ones is even lower. Everyone wants a vintage guitar or car!

I have to agree. I’ve produced small scale videos like this, it can be chaotic and high pace and difficult to know what to capture and when, let alone capturing things correctly in various light conditions. It’s not easy to get a video to this level of polish. His team does a wonderful job! Edit: just to add, it really helps when you have someone as professional as James leading the way

That was my favourite too! That art deco look is just beautiful, and the little piece of coffee history of it being from Gaggia's first line of models that used the word "crema" for espresso is amazing. €4,000+ is probably more than I'll ever be able to justify spending on an espresso machine though. That said, I do have a pretty decent home workshop and some friends that do vintage car restorations, so Enrico's tales of finding these gorgeous machines forgotten in cellars is definitely making me think a road trip round Italy to go espresso machine hunting could be on the cards at some point...

I confess, I was quite surprised at how *little* he is asking for one of these restored machines. His prices are eminently reasonable. Personally, I've always loved the styling of the La Pavoni machines... here in DC, many older restaurants have one of those bigger models, with that eagle on top, usually off in a corner and I'd LOVE to see one of those beasts actually working. But in this video, I think that Gaggia is the one I most want to see.

considering that he has to put like 50 to 150 hours into these machines, that's a steal. If he would put 50 hours at 6000 Euro into a machine, that's just 120 Euro / Hour. But it's not. The machine is also worth something. So maybe just 60 euro / hour? Anyway, it's crazy how little he wants for these beautiful vintage coffee machines.

That classic Gaggia with the text “Crema Cafe Naturale” is stunning. I love the design and styling of that machine and the glow of the lights. It somehow reminds me of going to an old theater. These vintage espresso machines were designed to be both beautiful and functional. What’s striking to me is that attention was devoted to the way the machine presents both to the barista and the bar patron. I can’t imagine that many kitchen appliances today are designed to be beautiful from the front and the back - nor do many appliances seem built to last the way these machines were. I doubt it qualifies as a vintage machine, but I recently tuned up a copper and brass pre-millennium La Pavoni lever machine. It was gifted to me after it had been lying around unused for some time. I’m glad it wasn’t my first espresso machine. The learning curve has been steep, but as I become more skilled with it it’s very much fun to use. To have such a beautiful and functional object that I get to enjoy daily is a joy.

I bloody love this video, it’s like a cross of coffee and classic cars. Also a small win for the environment I love how these machines are being rescued and repaired or even re-manufactured and being kept by people who will love and cherish them. I can’t wait to see the final results and definitely will be thinking about a trip to London to see and taste for the finished product.

Yes! When they first started showing them I was struck by how so many of them reminded me of the front end of a car or the grill of a car etc. The Marzocco looked like the grill of a 1930's truck. All that Chrome. Very cool.

A series involving James travelling across Italy, and taking in the culture of each region would be killer. Stanley Tucci has just recently hosted a series on Italian cuisine and it's historical significance and attachment to the people of Naples, Florence etc. Wonder if there's scope for the to commission a series? Fantastic insights here and beautifully shot

Last month I bought a Special Edition 1998 Gaggia Classic, fully polished stainless everywhere with 24k gold plated group, portafilter, drip tray & top plate. It may not be in the same ‘vintage’ class as the machine you’ve just bought but it’s one of the most beautiful things I own. I fully understand your love for old things. They don’t make em like they used to.

It's nowhere near as expensive or old as the amazing and beautiful machines you got to see there, but I recently bought and refurbished a 30 year old La Pavoni Europiccola and absolutely love it! My mind was blown seeing all of those historic machines! That you got to pull a shot on the Gaggia made me really jealous! And that beautiful Faema! Maybe one day I'll make a trip to the UK and can enjoy a shot from that beautiful machine!

@@MadsMilkyton I would not recommend that model because it does not have a spring lever assist. A model with a spring assist just feels so nice and is easy to use. There are not very many models on the market so I recommend 2. My first machine was a PONTE VECCHIO. It is great for the money but is a 1 person machine. If you have multiple people drinking coffee it is not fun to have to refill and the group head is small and a bit odd. That machine now lives in my RV and is perfect there. I upgraded to the Profitec Pro 800 and I am still in shock everyday how great the shots taste. The $ for the machine and grinder was my entire tax return a few years back and I would do it again in a heartbeat. I go to shops around town and I have never tasted better espresso than my own (I also roast with a Behmore and Sweet Maria Beans). I am a person who believes that things you use your hands with should be supreme quality because you will enjoy it more. The Izzo and Bezzera are great too. Do yourself a huge favor and make the jump. Just manage your expectations. The levers are easy to use once your dialed in and the changes you can make on the fly with pre-infusion are fun and keeping your brain exploring. The softness and sweetness of the shots are unrivaled. Let me know what you choose.

This is by far one of my favorite episodes, James! I am a true fan of Italian espresso and it's history, so while I appreciate the popularity espresso style coffee has gained in the last few decades in the rest of the world, in my mind the true standard will always be Italian espresso, with all the good and bad that goes along with it. These are beautiful machines and the restoration work done by Enrico is not only exquisite, but clearly a labor of love. Gracie!

The closest I have ever got to a vintage espresso machine is a small Faema Family single boiler I bought myself about 40 years ago. I stopped using it about 7 years ago. Cracking video James, and looking forward to seeing your Faema all shiny and sparkling again.

Absolutely loved this one. Not only that it's amazing to have a 70 years old machine that is working, but I believe this style, the lever, the grandiosity should return. Pulling a shot of espresso should be manual, it should be something you do, own and perfect over time.

I love hearing stories about how, years ago, someone first had an affinity for a certain something...which then became a hobby...which then eventually turns into them becoming the world's foremost authority on that particular thing. This was a fascinating video. Just knowing all the hours of hand-forming that went into those machines, they weren't something you'd just get "hot off the press"....James, you're right, it may not make sense, but sometimes you just have to follow your heart. 💓 GO FOR IT! 💓

I do so love James' enthusiasm and sparkle in his eyes when talking about this passion for the art and the devotion to the coffee-making experience. Sprometheus made a video about replacing baristas with automatons, but nothing can replace this experience, this effect. Coffee culture is, by nature, social. And James is right, it's something to be shared, with joy. One of my first coffee shop/microroastery jobs was with a roaster who also collects and refurbishes old coffee machines, from royal balancing siphons to espresso machines, and many are art pieces around the store. I'm taken in by how they work, the engineering of it, and how those designs have changed (or not) over time. I can't wait to see James receive the finished restoration and get to play with it. When times are better, I'm long overdue to visit London. I'll be sure to try and get some coffee from this cool machine. Omotesando is also on my list. Awesome video, James!

James, I'm not asking you to comment on politics, i just want to speak my mind. Your calming and interesting videos help significantly with the anxiety related to the recent events in Eastern Europe. Many of my favorite RU-vidrs were effected directly by this event in Ukraine including Life of Boris, among others, and to find a channel un-changed is nice. It's nice to feel like nothing is different nowadays. Thanks for your content

I know what you mean about drinking coffee from something old. I have my grandmothers stove top Pyrex percolator from 1950. Its my day off coffee maker when I can sit down and enjoy it. I've had it for years now, but I still stand by the stove and watch it work every time I use it. I just love it!

Not an espresso machine, but my great-abuela's stovetop Espresso maker is kept near and dear by our family, the thing is 100+ years old. I don't believe we've even attempted to make anything in it during my life, it's just kept as a family treasure.

Dammit, Jim - now I want one! Talk about art deco beauty, and industrial innovation (for its time), all rolled into something that you can actually use daily if you're so inclined. This hits my coffee nerves in much the same way that Henry Catchpole's Carfection videos do my automotive ones. Gorgeous cinematography and editing, fascinating subject matter and people, and an outstanding expert presenter. I feel content like this outshines anything paid TV or streaming has to offer. Well done!

They seem quite cheap for what they are imho. 1st edition, rare, from the 50s, is truly a piece of history, an art piece, and also something that is functional, which costs 6,000 euros!

Unless they were way overestimating the shop hours needed to restore, the cost seems very cheap. I’m sure the pieces are sent out to a plater/chrome shop. The job seems very similar to restoring vintage soda machines in the U.S.

This is the first comment I believe that I have made on your postings James, as usually enjoy your comments on a tv that does not all ow me to comment. But this video compelled me to open the laptop and send you a message. YES, these vintage machines are magnificent. I have the pleasure of being in Seattle where a hotel, well prior to COVID, had a spring driven machine. I would arrive early in the mornings on the first commuter train available and walk the mile plus a bit to their cafe and enjoy a wonderfully pulled shot before hitting the office. Also, hidden away, down an indiscrete alley is a coffee roaster with shelves of machines that have been collected for over 50 years. Some are simply magnificent in design and items that are long lost to many. Lastly you asked about our favorite machine in the video. Mine was actually found in the background. A giant tubular machine with a brass eagle on top and multiple group heads across its round base. My favorite because I stopped in Cheyenne Wyoming this past summer for a coffee and sandwich and the shop had two of these. The coffee experience was enhanced by watching shot after shot being pulled from those magnificent machines. Thank you so very much for letting me relive that memory and remind me how so very fortunate I have been on my journey into coffee.

I bought and restored a LaMarzocco GS2 from 1980 over the last year, it was such a beautiful process, calming, inspiring, a great balance to work. It makes incredible espresso and the best part is I had every single screw in my hands and now it’s all back together working perfectly.
