Buying and fixing an international 4700 with transmission problems

In my video, I buy an international 4700 dump truck with transmission problems. I diagnose and fix the truck by pulling the 5 speed spicer es42-5d transmission, replacing all clutch components and then realize there is teeth missing on the counter-shaft drive gear. So I tear down the transmission and replace the gear, some bearings and seals.

Andrew has been doing this longer and he is the GOAT, but this video hit it out of the park, and you aren’t far behind. Having been through a series of Mother Nature catastrophes here in No Cal (huge fire, huge mudslide from floods off the fire, loss of seventy feet of 10” mainline on the side of a cliff above the slide, and a heavy snow that toppled hundreds of giant oak trees), the thought of adding the time and effort to video all of our battle against all of that is , well, daunting; and I appreciate more what you and Andrew are doing with your talents and efforts. It is really appreciated by those of us who love this stuff. Thanks to the both of you.

Great job. As a former Parts Counterman for a Navistar Dealership and a DIY Mechanic I can tell you have been around some Mechanics and a Shop before. Checking everything while it's open always helps prevent future problems. Good work on your Camera placement, lighting, and Narration. I'm sure we had a better view than you did most of the time and I did not envy you while lifting the Flywheel, Clutch, and other components in place. Nice to see Transmission was Safely secured to the Transmission Jack. Keep up the great work!

Fine job in past years did a good amount of that same gear replacement. A cowboy behind the wheel or a muddy foot that dropped the clutch, that with the combination of a bad pilot bearing shortened its life. But I was always happy finding this kinds of trucks. Easy repair and a quick turnaround on the money. In your case looks like you picked up a decent truck for the right money 💵. Great content 👍

We had an 89 with a hiab and an 18' deck. I loved the truck! Laid many miles of pipe with it. I remember being new and there was a main break. They asked if I knew how to drive stick. No problems getting to the scene, then tried shutting off the ignition. I couldn't figure out why it would not shut off. Decided just to stall it, then figured out what the chrome T handle was for.

When I do one where it has to be bolted a certain way, I either paint it where the bolt needs to go (like on a flywheel to torque converter on a Subaru) or use a center punch and center punch next to the "top" bolt hole... On a side note... I have an 1989 International S1600 26" Uhaul Box truck... None of that emissions crap on it... ;) I'm in the process of making it a "stealth camper" 11' living area in the front and a 15' complete metal and wood workshop in the back... So I can travel around the country and if I run low on cash, fix or make something... I tore a ligament in my forearm, couldn't even lift a cup of coffee let alone wrench on a big truck... so that has slowed me down... getting better though... Thinking about running it on used motor, transmission and veg oil... Need a centrifuge and filter setup with separation tanks and add another saddle tank to it.
@jmuller86
@jmuller86 4 года назад
with the way this world is going, the truck seems like a good idea. but better yet the waste oil/ veg oil is another failsafe. Thats why I will always have a few trucks without the emissions and electronics. When things hit the fan I can still drive those trucks. You can make oil out of algae too.

Nice truck you scored there. Good diagnostics and great repair. Seems to me thought that the noise goes away in fifth because you are not using the counter shaft for fifth. Come on, most stuff is over engineered anyway especially in those bulky old American trucks. This is real life stuff - if it breaks it will not harm anything but equipment and it is still good for many good work hours. And 120 bucks instead of 400 ... that is economic and is sustainable (less waste, and less CO2). It is good maybe not best practice but I love it and respect it, I am a engineer too.

Bought an 80 Malibu V8 once with a serious engine knock and a hard starting problem. My first suspicion was the timing was off and the engine having a broken crankshaft. Turns out the guy I bought it from had replaced an old bad engine with another used engine, didn't shim the starter which resulted in the binding of the starter gear against the transmission flexplate (flywheel) causing several cracks which made a lot of noise. Had to pull the trans, replace the flexplate and shim the starter. Ran fine after that.
