i think the best advice you can ever give anyone is buy from a reputable breeder, one that is willing to go out of their way to build a relationship with their client to ensure their snake has the best life. i almost made the mistake of picking up mine from a facility that houses tons of different breeds, imported, and shipped out. the more i read, the more i saw nothing but negative reviews on these people. i found a breeder that showed the snakes lineage, made sure i had all the proper equipment for setup, and refused to ship the snake out until the weather conditions were perfect. they answered the MILLIONS of questions i ended up having, questions i wouldn't even have thought of when i was shopping around. i am so grateful for these people. my snake has zero issue; his temperament is so chill, eats like a horse, never strikes at me, and gives perfect sheds.
I've mixed feelings about a breeder who I've come to strongly dislike after buying a snake, frozen mice, and some stuff for the enclosure from his store. First red flag: No individual pictures, especially not of the "boring" snakes and morphs. He states in the FAQ that request for pictures are denied, he has a business to run, he doesn't have time to take pictures all day of every single hatchling. In a dismissive tone. In a video, he listed questions like "when did the hatchling I bought shed/ate the last time?" as a "dumb question from reptile noobs" question. He also doesn't keep track on the hatch dates. I bought a snake anyway, knowing all that, a "boring" corn snake, wild morph because it happens to be my favourite (and not for the money, I willingly paid the "het scaleless tax" although I don't plan to breed) because I was slightly drunk and grieving the loss of my escaped first snake. So, yeah, the only info I got on that little guy is that he's born in 2019 and het scaleless. And yes, in 2-3 years it won't matter anymore but until then, it'd really be nice to know when he hatched, what he was fed etc to keep better track of his growth and in case a serious vet visit is necessary. Also, the frozen mice I ordered arrived thawed (I paid 20,- extra for appropriate shipping for frozen goods), complaint denied, and I was told to just throw the thawed mice as they were into a box and send it back. Yeah, no. I don't break the hygiene rules of shipping services for another person's fuck-up. There were problems with the rest of the order, too. As for the snake, he's been healthy since day one and been absolutely terrified of any human who was just in the same room. Not just cautious and the level of scared you expect, terrified. I couldn't be in the same room without him freaking out, shooting out of the hide and trying to get away, same when I changed the water. It took several sessions of handling that were no fun for either of us until he calmed down. And now he's a "cuddly" snake who seeks my company. But still darts away from any other human who comes too close. I love this little guy and do not regret having him. I do regret that he comes from an unpleasant breeder who I wanted to give a chance despite my gut feeling. I hate he earned money thanks to me. While I wouldn't trade either of my snakes (the escape artist reappeared after a five-week absence) for anything, I strongly advise newbies to not fall for the good feeling of "saving" an animal from breeders you don't feel good about, or to fall for the pretty pictures of the animal. Sure, the interaction is short and the animal will be your companion for years so it makes sense that you pick the one you really like. However, there are many, many breeders out there who treat all of their animals well and a basic amount of respect, even when they aren't the fanciest, most expensive morph. I'd suggest to rather take your time and find a breeder who deserves to earn a few bucks for their passion and effort and who offers an animal you fall in love with just from the picture.
I agree with you. I hate tire kickers, they ask questions even ask for more pictures. Then they have more questions, however they vanish or say I’m just looking. I like you love what I’m doing but I hate wasting time.
Exactly. I have no problem with all of that if people are trying to decide, but it's when you get 20 pics and a video in and they tell you they are not ready to buy for a few months it drives me crazy.

That's why they're called sweat shirts ;-) being unprepared don't keep any animal period! Plus research is a huge part of the fun, I love buying books and watching awesome content as this, so good job again man...
Great video man, I actually bought a hypo blood jungle about 3 weeks ago. I had seen non edited photos of him before the morph market photos got updated to ones that made him look redder than he is. The claim was the first set were while he was in shed and the new photos were right after he shed. But I had already saved the old photos to my phone and could compare the color of the table top. That said, I still wanted the snake so I got him. But that's definitely something to look out for. It might have even been your old video that made me think to compare the old photos to the new btw. Overall I feel like not having a human hand in the photo can indicate a higher chance of changing the color of the photo.
Unfortunately I don’t think they ship to Canada but they might! I occasionally have Canadian shipments of BCI, but it is usually fairly expensive of about $800 USD.
Great work. I have a hard time buying online, unless it's from a familiar breeder. I won't buy from reptile retail stores because it seems shady with all the farmed animals and it's not very transparent on CB, farmed or wild caught. Stay safe during these crazy times.
I get so much crap for buying a couple of my retics from NERD cuz of price but that's not what matters to me. I trust them the animals I have of theirs are great I couldn't ask for better. And if a person can't save an extra hundred bucks how do they expect to be able to keep up with their animal in the first place.... Anyway great vid as always man!
Thank you! And yes, they can be a little expensive but you're somewhat buying the name and also buying somewhat of an insurance policy that if something goes wrong they have a reputation to uphold. If you buy from Joe at the reptile show oh, he's gone the next day and you're out your money

Since it's birthing season, can you do a video about culling newborns. What are the issues that you would have to solve by culling? How do you justify your reaction for each of those issues. When do you decide to cull instead of trying to get the neonates to live? Thanks!
I've honestly done that very few times. I usually give everything a chance and if it goes on its own then it goes but you would be surprised at how well some of the snakes that are born with a little bit of a birth defect can do
100% I always tell people to build a reputation with cheaper snakes that people are willing to take a risk on. Mistake I see so often is that people go out and buy the most expensive thing they can afford then try to sell $4,000 snake and can't move them

I've been on eBay for over 20 years and am pushing 4700 positive feedback and my seller metrics are what most sellers wish they could achieve. I still have people constantly doubt me when I put "brand new & sealed" in the title of a listing.

Great video as usual I've purchased to snakes online, from pet shops, reptile shops, and traded in person.... I can tell you from all of these experiences if I ever get another I'll stick with online breeders of trusted reputation. If I ever want another boa I'll probably look you up! Here's 2 anecdotes related to your video. As a keeper. I mostly just had a love for snakes and just have a few as pets. I was never too concerned with what morph I had or getting one at a certain price. I only really cared about the species that interested me. So price only factored in how much a normal cost. So say something like my dumerils boas were the highest entry points as they're usually about $300 to start But for example ball pythons I just have a normal and a single gene banana. So when I finally decided to get my first boa it was the same thing. There were many beautiful morphs and localities. But I was just looking for a normal imperator. Just having the species was enough for me. So I was all set and ready to spend maybe $50-$100 depending on local prices. But when I got to the reptile shop the first one they put in my hands was a beautiful hypo motley boy. I was handling him the whole time they showed me every other boa they had. He was so curious and sweet that I just knew I couldn't walk out with any other snake that day. $300 was nothing to me to have him and he's to this day my most tolerant snake and I can't imagine having any other boa. My next story. Regarding people bombarding you with basic questions. I'm no expert but I had a high school kid from a Facebook group constantly messaging me about how to setup care for getting his first boa. It was sweet but getting a bit annoying. So... I know it sounds little crazy but one my concerns with buying online is I don’t actually get to hold and examine the animal and too see if it’s super defensive or nippy as I don’t breed mine or for pets . This was a great video though with great info
100% a valid concern. All snakes will calm down with time, but I try to work with people as best I can and can mess with a few they like to give an idea of temperament.
My feeling is that when you start asking even the most respected breeders in the business questions like they they will simply prefer to sell to someone else. I feel that if a reputable breeder encounters a snake that they feel wouldn't be suitable for a pet due to it's behavior then they wouldn't be selling it. No matter how any of my snakes started out once I got them they all have easily chilled out quickly with calm, confident & regular handling.
Yeah i was recommended from a well known utuber to a guy for some Suriname boas and when i spoke to him in a private message he would not even send me a pic of said boa he said unless i was serious about purchasing said snake. Well how can i before sure i want said snake or iam gonna be even interested if i cant even get a pic of the snake. Plus i mean unless he wasn't at home and wasnt around any snakes ok then i can understand. But either way when u get home i mean u can't send a pic shit bro if u breed these said snakes then u should just have a few pics on your phone. But refuses who does that u know. I have found that most of the people who arent really big on utube or FB or whatever other sociol media i can trust them more. And that sucks because alot of these guys get a channel or are FB famous and u just automatically want to trust them but they will screw u over faster than anyone. And they will get away with it because they have more followers and all them people will believe them over u in a sec. Which is sad. But i found someone who i think i can truly trust now who has quality animals. So i am happy but the thing is anymore when it comes to boas its hard to tell really what u are getting even if u do know the person because alot of these boas are so mixed up and there growths have been stunted over the years. Unless u go and get some true wild caught ones from the jungle u really dont know
Love your look into the common sense of any market. I, unfortunately, think the newer generation is geared this way...not meant to offend, but when we were kids, we had to research stuff when we wanted it bad. The new generation, has so much technology available, they dont have to go that far for info. That, I feel, is why you have to spend your time answering "dumb" questions, or ignorant inquiries. I answer all questions regardless, but I'm way smaller than you in this industry. Feel free to PM me privately, in case you dont wanna spoil a review...lol

Great video! My problem is, I'm not a collector/breeder. I have a few pets. Personality varies pretty extensively in snakes, in my limited experience. I have a burm and boa that are amazing, and a boa that is a complete asshole. Like you said, it's a 20 year commitment. My local reptile show is ok but limited, and most people don't want you going and holding all the snakes. I'm not a big morph guy anyway, so how do I shop for personality over looks?
Always go with a breeder that answers questions. Part of the customer service you receive is their job. I have asked about personalities in the past too, and almost all breeders have answered me truthfully. Bottom line, their reputation is on the line, and they want your interactions to be good. That’s not a dumb question. Now if you are asking questions about general care and husbandry...well...you should’ve already done your research before contacting a breeder. Hope that helps. 🙂

Side note, you gave me some advice about feeding my carpet pythons a while back and I appreciate your help. It took about five months, but both recently ate and what a relief! How often would you offer food to two adult carpets who were without food for months, WERE eating jumbo rats, but only just started on a small rat?

I appreciate a LOT your job, it is awesome. Your care with the animals, your work with genetics and all... Wish I could work with snakes as you do, sanitary, clean, with focus and responsability. Wish you the best always. I'm from Brazil, and here we have in our jungle the boas, even though here for keeping a boa as a pet you have to have a license from the government and pay a huge amout of money for one exemplar, that's why most people have illegal boas, not wild caught, captivity born, but illegals, just because don't have the license (that is EXTREMELY hard to get, to reproduce and keep these animals, much more than just for buying one, and that is already a huge amount of money, for reproducing them is much much more). I hope so much that one day we reach your country laws and permissions... You know we have the animal naturally here, in our jungles, the perfect climate, and have to get into a huge cost to just keep one as a pet... Keep the hard work, here we appreciate a lot your job and will always have ours good energy :)

Don't be lazy if ya are goin to have a reptile and are to lazy to learn on your own then why get it I try t9 spoil the heck out of my babies and it's not hard to learn about wich ever animal you get I enjoy researching the most out of my reptile
I just recently got a baby sand boa named Vinny who I'm housing for a friend until college. The little guy was being force fed and underfed, only getting food once every four weeks. He seems always scared, especially when seeing food. It's been two weeks having him, in his own tank in my room undisturbed until i try to feed him. He gets instantly stressed and tightens up when i bring him a mouse. What can I do? I'm worried that he's been abused with being force fed for months and I'm not experienced enough with snakes (Vinny is my first snake) to try and help him. What can i do? I don't want to give up on him.
Have you tried leaving him overnight with a pinky? My buddy puts his baby boa in a deli cup with his meal at night and leaves him alone. Checks him in the morning and *poof* pinky gone.
@@introverteddragon2247 Boo. I'm sorry, Last resort would probably be live pinkies. If that doesn't work I'd contact a breeder and get some advice or get him vet checked. Maybe previous force feedings damaged him somehow.

Heres what really sucks everyone is quick to bash someone else unless its there best friend. I have asked alot of boa breeders where im at hey i see u just got a badass sharp albino boa. And when i ask them can they point me i n the right direction for a sharp strain boa. Or do they know anyone who can help. And i have had everyone say nope sorry dont know anyone. But when i ask them well where did u get your female sharp from they all say oh from a friend i cant remember or they dont have any that was tyere only one or some bullshit. Because they haven't produced anything with there female sharp yet so they fucking lie. But yhey have kahl strains. Which that shit is real shady. But dont worry in about 10 years i will have some of the biggest albino sharp strain boas around.
I always try to direct people in the right way when I can. A lot of time I have no idea who is working with what so many times that's my answer as well, but If i know or know of someone who might I try to drop a few names.
Somewhat random question, but kind of on topic: do you know of anyone who focuses on selectively breeding non-morph boas? Or are boas all about morphs these days? (note: this is a curious question. I'm years out from getting a boa.)

(Or would you advise looking at BCC? I haven't seen you comment much on their reputation for being big, bitey snakes who will drop dead if they hear someone speaking about cold weather too loudly...)
