Today on Driftin' Donuts I did something a bit crazy and went out and bought a Porsche 356. These cars are special to me and hopefully, I can make some good videos as I restore this car.
my dream car is a 356.. i have a nov 65/912.. i love the long back roads.. oh to be young again.. no need to wish you luck, i know you will knock it out of the ballpark.. all the best..
I can absolutely relate to most of the things that you said. My father is an attorney and he cannot fathom why I like building pre-war cars. When I was in High school I had a 1967 911that I pulled out of a scrapyard. I then proceeded to rebuild what I had time to at my school that was known for graduates going to Georgetown and Harvard and not building cars . We did have a huge machine shop that was completely decimated when the machine shop teacher died. I kept going in school until I achieved a PhD in Metallurgical Chemical engineering. I never lost my love for building cars and have done a few Porsches and Kharmann Ghias. I was run over on my 1957 Harley during the plandemic and I rethought what I was doing. I have a Porsche on a trailer in the barn and a 1928 Morgan that I am going to start my RU-vid channel with. I found a great lathe and milling machine and plan on making all my own parts. Good luck and keep up the great work!!
Looking forward to your videos. I remember seeing a 356 in a two-line ad in the classified section of my local paper when I was in high school. I called the phone number and drove to a farm about an hour away. Car was similar - no drivetrain, no interior - but worse: lots more rust on this Canadian car. And this was in the late 1970s - no Internet, no forums, no RU-vid. Was way beyond my capabilities, so looking forward to learning how it’s done.
My father built a 1960 356 b his was worse than yours but he had it completely restored and I also witnessed this tedious process. Which will help us both rebuilding these cars.
I almost bought that car. I bought the one in front of it. The guy from Newport Beach . He had one cheaper than the one you bought. I like cars that no one else wants. Thanks
@@driftindonuts Thank God your dad had some parts for it. I didn’t have anything. When I saw it I saw it like you did. Finished. It took a lot of haggling to get mine to the price I wanted, still a bit more than I wanted to pay. If the car had the doors I would have bought it. Thanks
Subscribed, can’t wait to see this series! I have a 63 T6 in the process of being restored at the moment. Mine was a complete barn find with no rust so it’s mostly just a cosmetic rebuild. I didn’t want to screw it up so I took it to a specialist on the east coast.
Kind of advantageous to have it already in pieces in this case. You're pulling it all apart anyway, and you could see what you're buying. In the '90s I was seeing 356s for sale for 25 grand. I should have taken out a loan and bought one, it would have been better than my portfolio today.
Your Dad sounds pretty capable, but just in case, good friend of mine used to work at European Collectibles, has done several 356s of each version, and has even restored a few Mercedes Gullwings. He loves the old stuff! Feel free to reach out to get his contact info
