I’m really glad you bought this lovely Jag. To be honest your comment of “ a lot of car for the money” is a massive understatement ! It’s none of our business what you paid for it but even at the asking price it would have been a great buy. You seem to have the knack of finding and buying some real gems, your Pilot is a cracker and fingers crossed you’ve done it again with the XJ8.. I’m looking forward to seeing this beauty blossoming under your ownership. Great stuff😊
So glad it went to a great new owner. As I have commented before I knew the gentleman who owned it and it was his pride and joy. I did wonder if it would end up in the scrapyard. Hope you enjoy 👍
Thanks, if you have any info/photos of it back then could you email it to me please, anything to add to the file etc etc. I do wonder how long it would have been left there at the garage, as the space was needed for other things.
What a car nice to see the bumper touch up and wash and polish up I got to say I love the colour and also what lovely colour your dad's car cannot wait to see more videos road trips in
Useful and competent as the Jeep is, I'd rather have the Jag! I was hoping you'd buy it. It looks like it'll scrub up very well indeed. Looking forward to seeing how it comes round when it's cleaned.
Definitely keep up the information and progress on your “New” Jaguar. My current Jaguar is An S type 2006. I am delighted with its comfort and performance. This car follows many Jaguars including An E Type a 3.8 Mk 2 and several XJ’s. I love your channel Rick best wishes Alan
Time will tell if it was a good buy but as I said in reply to someone else, it cost the equivalent of just a few monthly repayments on some anonymous modern car.
Congratulations on your latest purchase. I am a big fan of any English "classy" cars and any Jaguar definitely qualifies. I would love to see more videos featuring this beauty.
I am a long time Jaguar owner. I have had an x300, an x308, 2 S-types and 2 XEs. Currently drive an S type and an XE. The only troublesome one was the X308 which developed the fatal nikalsil problem - so it was ditched in favour of the X300 which I owned for many years. They are without doubt the cars to have. I wish you well with it and will follow your journey with interest.
I have a X308 a lovely car. Could you please tell me what the 'Nikalsil' problem is? I've not heard, I would be delighted if you could briefly explain. 🎉
@@helenlloyd6564 Yes, no problem, When the X308 was first introduced, the bores of the engine were lined with nikasil. Unfortunately, if these cars were used on short journeys the bores were flushed with petrol which dissolved the linings and led to a lack of compression. The only cure was a replacement engine but it cost Jaguar a great deal of money. The problem was resolved with the use of steel liners and all cars built after 1999 were fitted with the later engine. The XK8 and some S types were also affected. I believe BMW had a similar problem at the same time. Hope this is helpful but if you want more, there is a great deal of information available.
@@helenlloyd6564 I wouldn't worry about the Nikalsil problem now, I own an X308 Daimler (non supercharged). It was a material used to line the cylinder bores instead of steel, sadly it broke down due to the sulphur content in the petrol back when the cars were new. Most engines were changed under warranty wither they broke down or under recall. If your car somehow still has a Nikalsil engine most people say not to worry about it now, due to the lower sulphur content in petrol now.
Any day is a good day to pick up a Jag. well done, so glad you got this, the long trips to shows will be done in style and comfort.Looking forward to incomming Jag videos.
Yippee! A car of character and looks that sadly, god as they are, the Jeep does not match. Well done - I really look forward to Friday! Rob Ah did not realise Friday was part of the video, and in a proper Jag! Lol Rob
Agreed, it actually feels a lot more relaxing to drive than the XJR I had, the latter always felt like it was straining at the leash to barrel along at warp factor 8. This one is more of an adequately-brisk wafter, which still steers and handles excellently.
I must say these jaguars are a favourite of mine. Also more in keeping with the fleet plus lots of fun to be had with the clean and recommissioning.well done enjoy the new addition.
My man had one of those in that colour many years back. Still to this day she still says it is one of the nicest cars to drive. Would love to see more content with the XJ and enjoy your latest purchase, it looks great
You have found a real gem of a car. Here in Canada leaving a car this old outside would mean certain death for this poor thing. The rust would have been eating it all by now. A good call looks great and low mileage also. Nice video Sir.
Congrats. Rick. I think you have a goodun there. I’m certainly interested in following how you go with it. I also certainly agree with your preamble. Get the best example you can even if it’s not quite the model or colour you might prefer. Full service with fluid changes and a deep clean detail and we won’t recognise it. 😆 I notice Dad has an Institute of advanced Motorists badge on his car. Good on him. 👍
If I felt bad for taking the "modern" MX-5 to a few events, how will it be in this young upstart!?!? I'll have to park in the bushes somewhere out of the way :)
Congratulations on your new purchase. From the brief information you gave us about the car I think you have a good example. I agree with you on the condition being more important than perhaps the 'ideal' specification I don't think it is a compromise in this case. I will be looking forward to 'the first wash' video coming soon, I hope. Harley can earn some money to put in the 'piggy bank' for his MG! Another suggestion I have is he can produce an advertisement for the Jeep that would also earn him some 'brownie points' for his desired purchase! I know it is a few years away yet before he will be able to take his test but there's nothing like starting early.. I hope you don't mind my suggestions re; Harley and if not I wont be offended if you just ignore them. Thanks Rick for taking us along and thanks to all who helped ease the purchase. 👍👍
Thanks, yes I think it'll be a good starting point although I fully expect there'll be a few jobs to do once it sees a bit of use. Same with the Jeep I had before, and the Discovery before that!
Looks a good car😊 Will be amazing when cleaned and valeted And it’s going to be used all the best with it Is it going to be Harleys first car dad can pay the insurance😳😳🙂!!!!
The X308 is total magic, my daily driver. Look after it. One thing, check how old the tyres are, people often leave old tyres on low mileage cars because the tread id still legal, but the rubber gets petrified and loses grip. The 3.2 is fine, not slow as the Mk2 2.4.
Yes, videos please on the Jag's wash and brush up, and what you find on close inspection of the car and its documents. I trust you will use the spruced-up Jag to 'waft' Mrs OCC along to the nearest handbag shop as compensation for your purchase. Mind you, some handbags have a price tag far exceeding that of the Jag! And I dare say the youthful assistant can't wait to get behind the wheel to 'burble' up and down the drive!
the volvo has been on the road and registered all of its 26 years. It has been kept in a shed all its life. There is a big folder with every thing and service that has been done. There is also a box full of new bits just in case. When I get it home I will send a couple of photos. Good luck with the jag
It's always good to have the "new" car safely home. I for one would definitely like to see the transformation and hear some of the history of the Jag. It's not exactly a sow's ear, but should clean up to be a silk purse.
Great choice, XJ’s are really growing on me. Would make a nice stable mate for my daily driver F Pace which the longer I own the more I like. It seems Jags start to get under your skin over time.
I would agree that condition/maintenance are the important criteria. I have owned a total of 5 jags over 20 years. 2 x Series 3 V12, XJR6, XJR8, and currently XJ8 Sov LWB 4L which I have run fo 12 years and now showing 236K miles. It has been reliable ("touch-wood"!). On 2nd Autobox and due another s/h refurb box (torque converter on way out!). Engine very strong and revs like a dream better than my XJR8 albeit ultimately a slower vehicle. In my long experience of Jags constant maintenance is crucial. Engine wise ensure keep air filter, MAF, inlet tract, throttle body meticulously clean. Every 3 months use proprietary inlet spray to minimise carbon build-up. Only use E5 petrol of 97/99 octance, ideally Shell, but Tesco 99 octane also v.good. I reside Urban London so occasionally add Redex with the fuel. Car is April 2002 and is ULEZ compliant. Would also recommend ZX1 additive for engine. Have used this product for years with no adverse effects to Jags. Definitely smooths out engine and revs better!! Also, I had a "squeak" (rather like a mouse from power steering) on current car and previous XJR8. I put a capful in the power steering resevoir and "squeak" disappeared, and not returned! Essential car serviced every 6 months and checked over meticulously by a reputable Jaguar Specialist. Change the oil and filter every 6 months. Rust wise I have had lower wings (f & r) sections done twice, front chassis-leg (n/s), front bulkhead & floor section (o/s). I may require rear suspension floor connections welding in next year. Also, when you have your Jaguar sorted stick with it....a change brings with it a new set of problems. Others may not have meticulously maintained their cars!!!
Some useful info in there, thanks, it was handy being able to have a look underneath mine before committing to buy it. I do wonder whether it's had new front wings at some point
Looks good to me Rick I love Jags I own a 1995 XJS Convertible straight 6 4.0 Litre ! 147,000 miles I have spent quite a bit on it all the mechanicals have been done brakes suspension bushes ect anyway I think you will be very happy with yours just keep a eye on the timing chains best regards Andy Allen
I have been a Jaguar fan all my life. My dream would be a MK 10 420 pre XJ6. Apart from being a Jaguar fan I love British classic cars. I own an XJ8 year 2000 "W" reg, also a Bentley T1 1970. I travelled 200 miles 400 round trip to buy mine. One previous owner 44k miles. I have only done 3k in 4 years now showing 47k. They are a brill car to own and drive. Mine is the same Navy blue as the one behind the Austin 1300 entering the show.
Nice, not so old Jag. I think Jags of this vintage get a special exemption to be included as a classic car that others (like say BMWs of the same vintage) wouldn’t get. More videos as it evolves, please.
This is going to be an interesting journey methinks. The dark blue one for £2,495 seems a snip. I have no doubt HJ will be recruited to assist with the cleaning of the new acquisition. I have always liked the styling of this model of XJ's and I feel Jaguar have lost their distinctive class recently. My grandson has just bought a new F Pace which has zero style or class in my humble opinion. Let's hope you don't find any hidden gremlins but you appear to have made a great purchase there RJ
I agree, modern Jaguars look like any Audi, Hyundai, KIA or VW SUV that you care to mention. I much prefer the swoopy lines of these old XJs even if it means they're a bit cosy (cramped) inside :)
Looks like a great car. I had this very model and it never seemed under powered to me. Apparently ,the sport has slightly stiffer suspension compared with the so called “base” and Executive versions it I never found the Sport to have a harsh ride at all, just the right level of waftiness. My Mrs is an eco warrior and hates all my cars and initially wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole but I knew the day would come when she’d need to borrow it when hers was up on bricks so to speak.Low and behold that day came.My phone rang half an hour into her journey and I expected the worst and I thought I’d get a right earful. She’d felt it necessary to stop and tell me how fantastic it was and how much she loved it. High praise indeed ,couldn’t get the keys off her after that.
Should be more news on it soon, I'm conscious though that it's more modern than the stuff I typically post about here so I'll try and keep a sensible balance of old stuff vs slightly old/retro stuff.
Hi. Well aren't we going upmarket. A Jaguar , how posh. Ha !. It doesn't look to be in to bad a shape. You don't want a lemon. I'm getting old now and these cars don't look very old to me. For example , a car made in 1974 doesn't seem that old to me , but to someone as Harleys age it does. Well done. From Carl in NZ.
Great purchase I'd buy one but I don't have the space. I would be interested in watching you recommission it and bring it back to a gleaming classy vehicle. I hope you're not going to do an oily rag approach as this car needs to shine and gleam. Since it's replacing the Jeep will you be adding a towbar? Best of luck.
Oily rag is great for a pre-war car, or an old lorry, but doesn't really work on recent stuff like this :-) No I'll try and keep it clean! I did wonder about a towbar but with the long overhang rear of the axle, I'm not sure it'd work too well.
Hi that an extraordinary good car on the face of it however a risky buy if it goes wrong , plus high insurance running costs etc. but for someone like yourself ideal I’m jealous good luck with it
Wellll there's lots of advice around, insurance is minimal (no more than the Jeep), tax not bad either and I don't do much mileage so fuel isn't much of an issue. But yes they can be fairly complex and fiddly to fix, a bit like anything of its type and age I suspect. I fully expect a few gremlins before long.
Hi Richard . Must say that other Jaguar looked spanking for £2495 . I guess you paid under £2k for yours ? Will you clean it yourself or take it to a professional valet? 😊
I would have spent money on your beloved Austin A40. And I say that with love in my voice 😊 Why not go for the jag estate as it would be more practical. What year did jaguar introduce their first estate car? Can someone enlighten me please cheers all 🍻
In the end it'll be a straight swap for the Jeep £wise, and I do need something for distances. The only factory Jaguar estates of the era are the X-Types (the XF was later) and I'm not that keen on them (not compared to the XJ anyway).
Welllll I'll just concentrate on prepping it for reliability to begin with, I don't want to be too hung up on keeping it immaculate with it living outside
RIP out the Parrot phone kit.Absolute piece of crap . I splashed out two hundred quid on one of these for a Range Rover and it only ever worked about 20% of the time. Their advertising for this product was over ambitious to say the least
I would class any car over 20 years old a classic, Pity the DVSA and so the anti car LEZ zealots don't meaning many a great car now prematurely go off to the great scrapyard in the sky 😥😥
@@oldclassiccarUK I would go the opposite way of giving a sweetener to car hating politicians that NO vehicle is VED exempt (they love taxing us) and all vehicles must have an MOT but there is a classic class of vehicle say over 20 years old that by law are exempt from LEZ etc thus saving future classics.
