Buying This 2008 Audi A8 L is a Really Terrible Idea - Review, Tour, and Test Drive By Bill

Car guys, and even non-car guys, sometimes get the idea that buying an older German flagship for the fraction of the original price is a great move. All too often, they are wrong. A perfect example is this very attractive Audi A8 L, a 2008 model with a pretty remarkable option package, that looks sleek, powerful, and beckons the buyer on a budget with it's tawdry wares.
Don't do it. Even though cars like this can be bought for a fraction of their original price, that cost is not the one you will be maintaining - you will be maintaining the $100K car.
Over engineered, over-complicated, and the joy of repair shop owners everywhere. Yes, driving them is rewarding and satisfying, but if you're unlucky, you could be very unlucky.
But, maybe... maybe this one is a good one.... maybe everything will be just fine....
2008 Audi A8 L. Review and test drive by Bill. It is for sale privately - if you dare - contact primportsnaples@gmail.com.

I own this car, im 32. This guy is way over reacting, it's a great car and no one should be scared of it. It's not a Camry because it's 100 times better, and you gotta pay to play. I just fix mine myself if needed, if this isn't an option just find a good independent shop that's not a dealer. This guy is making it seem like it's going to break daily, that's ridiculous. The engine and trans are great. My air suspension has 165k on it. I'd buy this car over a Merc, BMW, lexus any day

Pay to play???? That’s the most stupid thing you could ever say to excuse PI$$ Poor reliability. You pay once, and that’s when you buy it not keep on paying because it’s a piece of crap. Stick with the Lexus LS. It’s a MUCH BETTER CAR IN EVERY WAY. AND WITH BULLETPROOF RELIABILITY
@JDJD-mw9rr
@JDJD-mw9rr 2 года назад
@@Mabeylater293 Well I'm more informed on the subject since I've owned BOTH cars that we're talking about. The Lexus and the Audi. The Audi is a superior car, it drives better, it's faster, the interior is much nicer and has more features and tech. The reason I said what I said is because the Audi will cost more, but it's worth it. My Audi A8 has 180k and it's been very reliable. I'm actually a professional mechanic, so I know what I'm talking about. You have to pay to play, that's how the world works.

OMG you’re driving me nuts with this review! I used to drive one of these for a daily several years ago and if you know how it all works, you can relax a little while driving it. Lift mode is for driving in snow mainly or maybe sand where you are. Leave the climate control in “Auto”, dial in the temp and forget it. It’s fully capable of directing the cold and warm air where it’s needed to keep you comfortable. The other buttons you kept pushing are manual overrides in case you you feel the need to override all the computers and do it all yourself. Those big opening pockets in the back doors are for cigars fyi. The red button stops the auto adjusting seats from crushing you if you happen to have a second driver that’s only 5’ tall and grab the wrong key or push the wrong memory button. It DOES have power closing doors if you don’t slam it every time you get in and out of it. The top button on the door handle LOCKS the door. Simply touching the underside of the door handle UNLOCKS the car. The MMI allows you to select just the driver door or all of them with one touch. All air suspensions are cost prohibitive to maintain. A decent rebuilt one will cost you $1500 each! If they leak a lot, you’ll wear out the air pump which will cast another $2K to replace so figure $12K in parts alone to bring it up to date and give you another 100k miles. Carbon cleaning can be done for 500. So yes, like anything in this class, you’ll need deep pockets to keep it going properly.

I bought a 2008 A8L in 2017 with around 75k easy miles on it and have now driven it another 70k miles. No issues whatsoever except a couple of door lock actuators. The styling and quality of materials inside and out is fabulous. The look, the ride, and the rear legroom are all exceptional, huge trunk, and I could probably sell it for close to what I paid. And, here in Boston, it is fabulous in winter, and the aluminum body will not rust from the salted roads. Sorry if the OP got a lemon, these things do happen, but I love this car.

Yup. Bought a 2015 A8L TDI in 2020 for work as I sometimes need to do 5-7hr drives and it's been sublime. Can set the ACC at 80 and get around 700 miles per tank. Library quiet inside and the diesel engine has been amazingly reliable. Get the oil changed every 4k and put Mr. Marvels in the gas tank with every fill up. Have not had a single issue and am at 115k on the odometer. Bought it with 78k.

Not always easy to service and finding the actual problem can be a bit of a struggle because the car is quite complex, but nothing unexpected has broken apart in 9 years! I do everything myself, because I have a shop and the knowledge and equipment to do it. Repairs done: -Gearbox cooling thermostat stuck open, replaced 18€ 1h labor -Right rear brake caliper greased, was sticking 1h labor -Replaced driver door handle, keyless sensor was broken (160€) -Heater matrixes (2pc) replaced (250€) 2hour labor -PCV rubber flaps replaced (45€) 1hour labor -Front strut bellows replaced (2pc total 230€) 2h labor, not joking, it was as easy replacing steel springs! -Replacing of blower motor next (80€) 2h labor -2 rear park sensors, 20€ each (5min labor, could do it by just putting my hand inside the rear bumper) -AC compressor blew apart, 250€ + filling 100€ around 7h labor -Alternator bearings replaced around 20€ and 6h labor -2 front driveshaft INNER boots 15e each, 2h labor total -Replaced inner tie rod 30€ + 1h labor (aligned myself) Then just normal services: -Oil 12L and filter every year 150€ -Cabin filter every 2nd year 20€ -Fuel filter 18€ -Spark plugs 12€ each 144€ 2h labor -Air filters 2x30€ every 60000km -Replaced coolant 19L so like 60€ -Replaced transmission oil twice 6L and a filter around 150€ total -Brake pads front 60€, rear 35€ (have ceramic brakes)

I have the 2011 model year, and it has been very reliable. Some rubber suspension bits wore out way too soon (it was an Arizona car) so the rubber dried up prematurely. I bought it with 32,000 miles 4 years ago and paid $32K. MSRP was over $90K new. Since then, 1 set of tires, 4-5 oil changes at home, 1 ea.55K Service @$700.00, and $1100.00 in suspension R/R. I guess I have been lucky it was worth the gamble.

Trust me, you’re not gonna be lucky for long. Here’s the thing about modern German cars from the big three; you can usually get (at least) 100k miles out of them before there’s a major failure. But once you go past that, expect to start lighting money on fire, assuming you want to keep the thing. The standard for car reliability needs to be more than just getting 100k miles without a major problem. Classic Mercedes (up until about the W124/W126) had effectively no expiration date, and could be infinitely serviced and maintained whilst offering most (if not all) features of a modern car, without any of the gimmicky excess. Similar thing for Lexus and Acura, at least ones from the 90’s/00’s/10’s.

the 2004 to 2010 are way more reliable than the 2011 2019
@Veikra
@Veikra 5 месяцев назад
Still the best in terms of reliability. the 2011 has the rust problem of the subframe in canada, the coolant crossover and the thermostat. No other big issues to 200k. And if you go to older 2004 to 2006 you have a toyota as long as you do timingbelts

Those Firehawk Indy tires are one of the best kept tire secrets on the market. They handle great in rain or shine and look so good that random woman have told me they like my tires. The price used to be cheaper but that goes for everything nowadays.

The buyer who bought new had the warranty coverage. Ever notice how those that can afford never own these cars past warranty? Back in 2008 most BMWs in USA were leased.

Last I heard, at least 70 prevent if the European luxury brand cars are leased in the US. Value decline on these cars is like watching the Hindenburg landing in New Jersey. Only the very committed or very foolish buy these cars after the warranties have expired.

Great video and your a funny guy. I own the exact same car 2010 though. Its expensive to maintain. The big problem with them is the drains getting clogged and water taking out the modules under the seat. But the car is amazing otherwise. Once you have the tools to repair such as VCDS and interface cable you can do everything yourself.

Brilliant! You've reminded me of a bullet dodged. At one point, a used A8 was among the cars I was considering buying. I looked at that screen and thought, "One of my co-workers will fiddle with that damn thing and break it...". I ultimately bought a G8 GT.

NBC Dateline did the hit job on GM pickups, both had to come back and offer retractions in their stories also. NBC admitted to placing explosives on GM trucks, 60 Minutes had to say after extensive studies it was driver error a bad design. I owned a Audi Fox 2 door coupe and never once mistook gas pedal for brake pedal.

Poor reliability isn’t entirely a deal breaker. If it were, nobody would buy Audis at all. I bought a BMW E39 540i manual transmission knowing it had coolant issues. The coolant issues inevitably cropped up, I fixed them and I kept the car for nearly 10 years. Paid $12k for the car and about $10k in parts and maintenance. In total, it only cost $22k USD. No regrets.

Years ago, I had an Audi based passat. As soon as the warranty was over, it started calling apart. Plastic got brittle and cracked at the lightest touch. I parked until the lease was over and got a new car to drive so I would not get hit with lease return charges. That was my last volkswagen/audi.

I’m on my second Audi in 12 yrs and all I’ve ever done is change the oil and new tires. My first was an A6 and at the moment I have an A7 my husband drives an A4 again basically trouble free. Now there are cars with gremlins no doubt. But can be any car maker.
