Can't say that I agree with Aang not having a character arc. I always saw the whole show as being about Aang having to grow up and face his responsibilities as the Avatar instead of running away from them.

@avereynakama9854

On top of that, his entire worldview have to change just to be the avatar. Sure, he had an easy time learning to bend water, but earth was a literal wall for him. Toph called him out on it and said that he had to meet challenges head on instead of going around them like water does and air has to. Learning to bend fire presented a similar challenge. The method to truly be a fire bender was more complex than even Zuko realized, seeing as he needed to relearn how to do it as well. Once he saw everything he was capable of, then he could choose how to use his abilities in HIS unique way, that of a pacifist.
@Scouthedog1

Exactly, In book 1 he's a goofy kid who doesn't want to take responsibility of being the avatar but by book 3 he's a lot more serious and ready to take up that responsibility whilst never losing his goofy side it's just a little more subdued now with the weight of the world on his shoulders.

Definitely one of my favorite _little_ things about Toy Story is Pixar realizing that any animated characters are going to look like they're made of plastic, so they had the GENIUS idea of making a movie about plastic toys-it both keeps the film (mostly) out of the uncanny valley, and gives it a timeless look.

@TheSmart-CasualGamer
@TheSmart-CasualGamer 8 месяцев назад
That's why the first half of Pixar's filmography is so much more interesting to me. You can see the progression. Wall-E sort of acts as a technological climax, as it's absolutely GORGEOUS and hasn't aged a day. But to get to Wall-E, they had to do Finding Nemo first to get water down, so they'd know how to do space. They had to do Cars for large crowd scenes, Incredibles for Humans (Although the '50s and '60s comic book look allows some leeway with the realism)... It's like they had a checklist. Once Wall-E was done, the technology doesn't have any giant leaps, it's just improvements and refinements.

I saw a theory about this once that made me feel better about this choice, Woody is seen in the movie using his voice box to speak without moving his mouth, basically controlling his literal “inner voice”, and that Buzz is doing that as well, but doesn’t fully realize or accept it, and his thoughts are manifesting as voice clips. It would also explain why there’s all these clips that we haven’t heard somehow until this movie

Personally I've long held the belief that part of the reason Buzz Lightyear branded toys within Toy Story tend to come out of the box delusionally believing they're the real character while basically no other toy suffers from this comes down largely to the packaging. The packaging of other characters makes it clear somewhere on the box that they're toys, while Buzz, Zurg, etc. have their characters giving rousing in-character speeches on the back of the box. Note how Woody couldn't just point out small text about manufacturing details on the underside of Buzz's "spaceship" he was packaged in.

It's most likely wrapped up in legal red tape. It was originally made to air on UPN and ABC's Disney block. In this case The CW and ABC both have claim to being the service to stream it alongside Disney+. Until it gets straightened out I doubt it will air on anything. Same this happened with Recess. It was made to air on the ABC Disney block meaning Disney and ABC had contractual claim to the show, this meant it couldn't be streamed on things like Netflix or Hulu. The Recess movie could be streamed as that was all Disney but the show was stuck in limbo till Disney+ came out and Disney only had to talk to ABC about getting it back.

Are we sure Aang didn’t have a true character arc? Maybe the wrong thing to focus on, but I do feel like maybe he did change a little bit by the end, by becoming more grown up and responsible instead of a goofy kid that ran from his responsibilities. He was still very much a kind and good person with a sense of humor, but he didn’t really run from his destiny anymore.
@williamsapong81
@williamsapong81 2 года назад
Yeah. It just was a lot more subtle and didn’t receive as much direct focus as, say, Zuko’s chapter arc. We got to see first hand how both characters changed over time, but while a ton of time was dedicated to showing every little bit of Zuko’s story, Aang’s arc sorta felt left on the backburner.
@1sdani
@1sdani 2 года назад
@@williamsapong81 Aang's arc took all three seasons, with him going from an airbender's mentality of avoiding his problems to learning the waterbender's mentality of adapting to change, to learning the earthbender's mentality of standing firm against opposition, to learning the firebender's mentality of pushing for what he believes is right. Aang may not have an arc in the finale, but that's because the finale is the final test of everything he has learned up to that point, like an earthbender he stands firm by his airbender mentality of pacifism even as the entire world tells him he's wrong and like a firebender actively searches near and far for a way to adapt like a waterbender to a seemingly unwinnable scenario. In the final clash of spirits, he takes the initiative like a firebender to impress his will upon his enemy, and though Ozai's spirit is more forceful, Aang's is able to turn Ozai's momentum against him as a waterbender would, allowing Aang to succeed in maintaining his airbender beliefs through a power that requires his spirit to be, like an earthbender's, unbreakable and uncompromising.

My biggest problem with Toy Story 4 is that Buzz is too stupid. The scene I hate the most is the one where Buzz DOESN'T go after Woody because his inner voice convinces him not to. Woody literally talks about loyalty and apparently Buzz is either too stupid or his loyalty is too weak for him to realise that his inner voice is wrong and he needs to be there for Woody. Seeing Buzz go on one last adventure with Woody and staying with him throughout would not only stick to the line at the end of the second film where Woody says "in the end, I'll have old Buzz Lightyear to keep me company" but also it would make the ending even more bittersweet because you'd know how hard it was for Buzz to let go of Woody.

Or you could do a story about toys in a toy store waiting to get bought but also not separated. Or what its like to be sold at a yard sale and adapt to new surroundings to accept that you can't go home again. There's lots of ideas they can do.

Toy Story 2 was probably the one instance where Buzz was actually intelligent for the entire movie - TS1 Buzz has that character-delusion for about 70% of the movie, and that other 30% is him being broken/depressed, with minor instances of being neither - TS2 Buzz (Andy’s) is genuinely smart and doesn’t suffer from C-D. The other Buzz (Al’s Barn) is basically just TS1 Buzz - TS3 Buzz does have about 15% from the start and 15% from the end to be intelligent, while the 70% in the middle is, yet again, TS1 Buzz but done differently (as an antagonist for about 70% of that 70%, then the other 30% is Spanish Buzz) - TS4 doesn’t have any semblance of TS1 Buzz, but neither is he the same intelligent buzz from TS2 and part of TS3. In fact, he isn’t even that intelligent anymore. His characterisation here was just stupid, both figuratively and literally. That’s sad For me, I like TS1 Buzz. TS2 Buzz is my favourite. TS3 Buzz is great, though I don’t care for Spanish Buzz. TS4 Buzz I hate with a burning passion (along with Forky, as while he’s a neat concept, he’s absurdly annoying even if that’s the point).

@@ewanb1086 eh, I’m sort of on the fence with the notion that all modern Disney sequels are garbage. - I think TS4 was alright and the ending was great, but I am one of those people that think the movie’s existence really wasn’t necessary. - Cars 3 I’m fine with considering how Cars 2 pretty much doomed the series altogether. The fact that they were allowed to produce Cars 3 in the first place is nothing short of a miracle. Without the existence of Cars 2, Cars 3 is great. - Incredibles 2 is an awkward case. On the one hand, I can definitely see where they went wrong with this movie (and there’s a lot that went wrong). However, I think people’s expectations of it upon release were a bit too high. It had been around 15 years since the first, so people were really hyped to see The Incredibles return, so I tend to cut it some slack - The Disney Star Wars sequels are a whole different story that I do not want to go into. I’d be sitting here for days conveying my opinion on them. Other sequels like Finding Dory and Frozen 2 are fine. They’re not anything groundbreaking neither are they complete dumpster fires. They’re just there. Additionally, while they may not relate to these sequels at all, the Live Action Remakes are also total garbage (except maybe Aladdin, but only because Will Smith pretty much carries the movie) and no doubt at least one of them will get a sequel/s which will be as equally bad

Okay about 95% and maybe a bit more of this video I agree with but... Aang most certainly did have a character arc in Avatar the Last Airbender. Because his whole character arc was about finally accepting the responsibility of BEING the Avatar and not running away from having to do the right thing. Sure in the finale he was able to find a way to stop Ozai without killing him but willing to chance his own life and stepping up so a tyrant wouldn't reign over others was not something Aang could of done at the start of his journey and something he had to grow into in order to be that person. Flat arcs obviously are a thing and yeah ones like Paddington or Marty McFly (James Bond also technically has character arcs in SOME of his movies especially some of the latest ones but certianly not in the Connery era) that's true for but Aang was a bad example to use and a real mis step of obviously a really solid video otherwise talking about Buzz throughout the toy story movies.
@eddache
@eddache 2 года назад
To me it was more about how Aang is a monk at heart and sworn not to kill, and throughout his journey he's been duty bound to doing the right thing, whether he wanted to or not, but then when his ideals are challenged, to take a life to save the world, he cannot face it. Aang has always felt like a pure optimist with his youthful energy, something that makes the moments like going Avatar when Appa is taken all the more impactful. So when faced with Ozai, with everyone telling him what to do, he finds a solution, an optimist one, that deals with the problem without betraying his ideals. His internal conflict and in turn the external conflict is solved by Aang being true to himself. Aang is a lot more complex to have thrown in as a throwaway example, but I feel like the bubbly boy in the iceberg managed to remain true to himself all the way to the end.
@1sdani
@1sdani 2 года назад
@@eddache That's his arc in the finale, which is itself a final test of everything he learned throughout the series. He would have never learned spirit bending, let alone be able to successfully use it against Ozai without everything he learned over the course of his character arc. Aang not having an arc in the climax of the series is like Woody not having an arc from Sid's Backyard onwards. Woody had already learned what he's needed to, and now he is tested on whether he has truly internalized it. If a character had an arc in a climax, they either haven't internalized what they needed to learn, or what they needed to learn wasn't enough to succeed, neither of which describe Woody nor Aang.
@DianaGohan
@DianaGohan 2 года назад
@@eddache Yeah but Aang refusing not to kill and being true to finding another root is only a part of his character. He still grew a lot over the course of the last 3 seasons and again the boy who ran away just finding out he was the Avatar and could no longer be with Gyatso is not the same guy who went into battle against Ozai even with the knowledge of knowing there was a different route then offing his life. And IMHO a flat character arc really only works if you're talking about a character who stays flat through most of their run time. With 3 of 4 movies that makes sense for Buzz Lightyear or examples like Paddington or James Bond but just felt wrong giving to Aang honestly.

I like the fact that Buzz Lightyear's character didn't change that much in the Toy Story sequels after the first movie, because like you said, there was no reason for him to change his character if he had already gone through a major change from him thinking he was a Space Ranger, to being Woody's buddy back when he was introduced in the first Toy Story movie. All Buzz really did in the second and third films was just switch back and forth between the two iterations of the character, but the less said about Buzz's character in the 4th movie the better.

I love what they did with Buzz in Toy Story 4 because it worked as a subtle clue to Woody leaving at the end, in the sense that one day Buzz will be on his own and he can't just turn to his commanding officer for guidance, so the only thing he can turn to is his consciousness, which is something he probably never understood in his life. Yes he was able to save Woody in Toy Story 2, but that was only because he had some shit to help him track Al's Toy Barn. In Toy Story 4, he doesn't have anything to help him get to the highway so it's the first time that he has to properly think on his feet. Without Woody, he's basically a lost soldier without the boss' orders. So when he finally learns what it actually means to have agency in his life, he's ready to face adversity without Woody's guidance as he has to stand on his own two feet.

Taking this into account, the original draft for the third movie makes even more sense as to why they changed it. The Toy Story movies really are Woody's character arc and in the original draft it was Buzz's story as he was sent back to Taiwan to be fixed after a malfunction. Of course on a personal note I believe that even though Buzz remains steadfast through most of the movies (and other toy story media) he still always receives the short end of the stick. Whether it be through getting replaced by another version of him, literally being brainwashed and manipulated to fight and imprison his family, whatever the hell happened in Kingdom Hearts Three, he never does seem to catch a break. Seems a little traumatizing for him tbh.

Hearing made me realize how Toy Story 4 could've been a lot better, and that would be if Buzz was with Woody for more of the film. If he had him jump out with Woody to bring back Forky and was then with him for much of that point onward, he could serve a role beyond the unneeded 'inner voice'. He could be the "shoulder angel/devil" to Woody along with Bo, with Buzz trying to convince him to stay so he can be there for Bonnie and them while Bo tries to convince him to follow his own heart. Then you could make it so Buzz learns the lesson that Bonnie will be ok and that Woody is doing what is right for him, and you could do that by replacing his B-plot with one about Jessie learning to take up Woody's role as the leader of Bonnie's toys with Dolly, which she seems to do in the actual movie offscreen, maybe even still have him meet up with Ducky and Bunny during that time which help him realize that. That way Woody, Buzz, and Jessie all grow in some way as characters, and leave something for Buzz to do in a possible Toy Story 5.

I heard somewhere through the grapevine that Lightyear is not only canon the world of Toy Story, but it was the movie that inspired the Buzz Lightyear Of Star Command animated series, which in turn inspired the toy version of Buzz. It’s basically similar to Batman The Animated Series being based on the 1989 movie.

This was a video I seriously appreciated as I'm reading books on storytelling! Out of them all, the steadfast/flat arc idea that "not all characters need to always have a fundamentally personality-altering arc" came up solely in just one book. I would say it is a very subtle but very interesting and frankly inspiring distinction -- as illustrated by the comment section getting particularly hung up on the statement about Aang having a flat arc "because he stopped running away from being the avatar." The thing is, at least I would argue, that external change no longer running from that responsibility was predicated not on him changing his core belief of pacifism (a defining part of Aang's personality) but rather changing what I would argue is a less personality-linked belief: that the Avatar cannot always be an ideal pacifist when faced with a balance threatening monster. To me this is the same as the Paddington example, or say Luffy in One Piece -- it isn't that a steadfast character arc fails to mature. It's that the core personality traits remain, well, steadfast! Even in the face of a conflict that seems to make them impossible to continue holding onto that personal worldview. A flat arc is still a character arc, but it is definitely not as common in contemporary character writing (esp. for a main protagonist, which is why I think Buzz is the steadfast arc after TS1 but Woody continues overlapping/related core-belief-redefining arcs) and perhaps because of that seems rather elusive to pin down as the Aang example shows. I also believe it isn't as binary as one arc type versus another, but instead simply one tends to receive greater focus -- how much external factors change you internally (and how fundamentally!) vs. how much your internal view reflected in your external actions changes the world and people around you. Personally, I was happy to learn not every character has to be tied down to the single structure of character arc across every piece of media--that always rubbed me the wrong way creatively.

Ngl I think Toph is a better example of a character with a flat arc than Aang. She didn’t really go through anything life-changing or epiphany-bringing like the rest of the Gaang. The show even acknowledges this when it points out she’s the only one that has yet to have a life changing trip with Zuko. Even by Korra’s era where she’s in her old age, she’s still the same short-tempered independent person she’s always been.

1:04 that’s my issue with the whole premise of ‘he’s the guy the toy is based on’ because the technology in the lightyear trailer looks way more advanced than 90’s Toy Story and the timeline doesn’t make sense, However, I’ll have to wait and see how they handle it when the movie comes out and it can still be a great movie even if the premise is a bit silly.

Thinking about it, wasn't it stated in Toy Story 2 that Woody was a hand-me-down from his father or mother? If so that may explain why Woody had such an ego in the original, because he was so well loved and probably his mother/father's favorite toy as well. So when Buzz shows up and Andy starts showing him more love instead, this gives him the impression that something isn't right and he feels the need to correct it.

The concept of toys coming to life isn't exclusive to Toy Story, in fact I think it existed before Toy Story even existed. There's this movie I believe called 'The Magic Wardrobe'. It's one of my favourite childhood movies. It's about this mini wooden toy wardrobe that has the power to bring anything put inside alive. But instead of it being a solely toy centred movie, the kid who owns the wardrobe finds this magic out himself and has fun with it. In one scene he put in his action figures in it such as Star Wars toys and dinosaurs. When he brought them to life they all immediately started fighting each other. It's quite funny. I don't remember much more besides the native American toy having plot relevance.

One Disney movie that would benefit from a sequel would be Zootopia. Despite how the first movie ends, society is still "broken", just removing Bellwether didn't make the systemic problems of Zootopia disappear. More like baby steps. Just because Zootopia is willing to accept a Bunny and a Fox as Cops...Doesn't mean those stereotypes go away. We know from our world that Cops have their own negative stereotypes and many people (especially in disadvantaged groups) don't trust the cops. Nick would still face Fox discrimination much as Judy would still face Bunny discrimination. So the plot could be about trying to affect more change in Zootopia...And that's not even getting into the hurdles their implied romance would face. We know from real life alot of people still won't accept mixed culture/race couples.

1:35 Well, many days ago on the Makeship website, the Eddache plush isn't available anymore due to nobody buying it and helping the channel's career. But he's still cute though, also he's my favourite RU-vid plushie, gotta love him! Well, next time if the Eddache plush came back, I'll get myself a little Eddie. And nickname it Plushache (Plush + Eddache + Headache), pronouced: "plush-ayk", and I'm guessing he will have similar personality and based on Bot, the robot version of Bow from season 3 of Inanimate Insanity. Here's the personality and information of Plushache on my channel's series: Unlike Eddache himself, Plushache is the only character that can only smile all the time, but sometimes curious of the words of his real self's death that he can't understand, and can cause his eyes to slowly glitch, causing him to never hear the words altogether. When he's falling or scared, he never screams so hard, he only screams in his normal state. He was created by Puffy the Jigglypuff and Spark the Pikachu due to how many times Eddache dies in some of the ending gags, that made them very uncomfortable.
