I have an Atto 3 and have none of these issues. In fact this is the most negative review that I have heard about this car and I got the feeling that there was some bias going on here. In my opinion, BYD have designed and configured this car to feel and drive like a typical SUV and I absolutely love it. Comments like the dash and speed reading being too small surprise me. I find it is perfect. Some reviewers say driver displays are too big and are obstructed by the steering wheel and Tesla don't have them at all. Maybe I am missing something, very confused

I have the Atto and at almost 70 I still don't need glasses, yet I find the cruise info, and the like, a tad too small and the light green is wrong for the pale blue background. It makes it even harder to see. Better contrast on dark mode, but you can't switch without the big screen switching, and that's better on day mode.

I have a Model 3 LR (Ryzen); went for a quick drive in the Atto 3 yesterday as a friend got it. First of all the design is gorgeous, especially in that standard/ light grey colour. Second the inclusions are amazing for the price, and internal passenger room was excellent - with very comfortable seats. Not having one pedal drive ala Tesla was the biggest "woa" thing for me, but like with anything it's something to get used it. It would be on top of the request list for me as an owner though! Actual proper BLIS lights was awesome, that and rear cross alert are prime features missing from Tesla. Interior was quirky but functional; the white waves will pick up scuff marks far too readily, but overall something one gets used to. Sunroof with automatic shade was great. Extra display was handy I suppose but I'm so used to mine now I do personally (much) prefer the reduced clutter of the Tesla; to someone else, the buttons and extra screen would be a massive plus. Performance couldn't be compared to my AWD 3, but there's no mistaking that this is a proper electric car which is fantastic for families with big kids etc. It's also a very important car in that it brings big electric family cars at a relatively affordable price to the market. So I'm wishing them much success, and can't wait for EVs to one day outsell fossil even in Australia.

I have to say as an owner in UK I disagree with more or less everything he has said about it, the wheel is centre aligned, the tyres here are continental, no screen issues. There is a slight delay from a standing start, but that is due to wheel slip prevention which can happen. The steering wheel sensor is because the nimrod isn't driving the car correctly if you were to hold the wheel one handed at the bottom on your driving test here you would fail. Overall, I will say so far my experience has been very good, on the UK model, maybe he has an early version.

@ 0:30 - the unlock button prevents others in the car from inadvertently changing gear! Just back from hiring an Atto 3 in Perth for a week and literally never had it beep once at me. Free charging on Chargefox and the simplicity of driving an EV made this my best ever hire car experience on 4 continents. I admit to not understanding why some people want one pedal driving as I found the "high" regen setting uncomfortably quick to slow down once I lifted my foot off the accelerator, so opted for the normal setting. Also admit to not even noticing if the steering wheel was off centre, and actually loved the small screen on the column with the large digital speed indicator, as it is so superior to "dials." Only let down was slowness to pick up regulated speed signs and lots of false "warnings" for speeding when I was not. Never thought I would say an automatic open/close tailgate was a great feature, but having used it so many times on the holiday, it proved really handy. And finally, that overhead shot of the car on screen made parking so much easier than I have experienced, especially when close to kerbs, so no chance of rim damage.

This review is so biased most of the criticism is based on driving other manufacturers idea of what an electric car should be. Moving into our first EV this vehicle is built and designed to feel like driving our previous ICE vehicle so cudos to BYD .,

@@chrisvanderstockI have an Atto3 and I feel exactly the same as you. The accelerator delay is annoying and the lack of one pedal driving is also disappointing. Accelerator pedal delay and lack of one pedal driving is the only reason why we will never buy a BYD again and why we are considering selling our Atto3. If BYD added one pedal driving and fixed the accelerator delay we would keep the car. I hope they don't add it after we sell the car because we really like the car except for those two issues. We thought we would get used to it but it is difficult to accept after driving a car with better regen and better accelerator response. We had an MG ZS before and the accelerator response and regen was very nice.

I'm in the middle of a two-week long hire of an Atto 3. It's the first electric vehicle that I have driven, and I quite like it. Comfortable, reasonably responsive. And it was cheaper than hiring a Corolla and has free charging at Chargefox included (if you can find one - no public charging facilities close to where I am staying unfortunately). Hired from Sixt. Good review Chris.

This is a much better car than the review suggests but only when you replace those horrible Batman tyres. Most of the other comments are small stuff, especially the one pedal driving. Comparison with the MG4 is understandable but perhaps it is the Dolphin rather than the Atto3 in that space.

I love the way my ATTO3 regen works, If BYD changed it to one pedal I would be disappointed. I am a retired motor mechanic, driven more cars than I can remember on all types of tyres. I have not found a problem with the standard tyres as far as grip. Yes can spin them if I try, but they are fine.

Why does every electric vehicle have to be compared to a Tesla. It's in a completely different price category and the Atto 3 does what it should. Both vehicles have pros and cons. No driver's information screen, no opening sunroof, no vehicle to load, no Apple carplay or Android auto on the Tesla. No Frunk or one pedal driving on the Atto 3. People buy what they can afford. Let's be honest Chris the MG ZS Ev is a closer competitor to the Atto 3 than the Tesla and I wonder if you didn't now own a Tesla would you have made the constant comparison in the first place? We all know the BYD Seal sedan is more of a competitor with the Tesla model 3 and the BYD sea lion with the Tesla model Y.
@graememills7778
@graememills7778 11 месяцев назад
People compare to a Tesla because in a limited market you will compare to the standard and in this case Chris owns a Tesla, only natural to provide a perspective. No car is perfect and people will buy based on what they feel is appropriate and acceptable to them from a value standpoint. One thing is certain however, no manufacturer has invested or can come close to the holistic software development and application that Tesla has currently.

I guess you're referring to this article? www.whichcar.com.au/news/porsche-coasting-more-efficient-than-one-pedal-driving-evs. From my study of EVs & how permanent magnetic motors work, they use current to allow the motor to spin; alternating poles so that the unit can either accelerate, reverse, or coast. Physics 101: every energy transfer involves some loss of energy in an unusable form, so regen FTW
@geoffsemon7411
@geoffsemon7411 11 месяцев назад
Changing the tyres to Continental Sport Contact 7's made a big difference to the grip, especially in the wet. It also means that the speedo is accurate to about 1% compared to about 8-9% over reading speed with standard tyres
@larryevans6739
@larryevans6739 Год назад
One pedal driving is typically less efficient. Regen has more losses than coasting, as happens with all energy conversions. You are taking kinetic energy,, converting it to electricity, converting to DC, charging the battery, then discharging the battery, back through the inverter, to the motor to convert back to kinetic energy with losses at every step of the way. Coasting is maintaining kinetic energy. Both use just the motors for regenerative braking to decelerate at a moderate pace, just one does it on lift off and one when you partially depress the brake pedal. And both engage friction brakes to come to a complete stop. One-pedal does not provide a functional benefit, it is just a user interface preference. The more you are coasting and not engaging regen, the better the range, which gives the advantage to coast on lift over regen on lift.
@chrisvanderstock
@chrisvanderstock Год назад
Interesting ideas there, however it's counter to what we know about range and energy use. EVs have more range doing urban driving due to lots of stop/start driving, ergo regen. We know that brakes waste energy and sure, coasting requires no energy - but that's not how modern permanent magnetic electric motors work.
@larryevans6739
@larryevans6739 Год назад
@@chrisvanderstock there is no difference in how much Regen happens during slowing down. One just starts braking on liftoff. The other starts when you apply the brake pedal. There is absolutely no advantage to one pedal unless you brake heavily and it prevents you from doing so. In the city they do better because friction and aerodynamic losses go up exponentially with speed. Regenerative braking either during lift off or brake pedal application helps recuperate some of the energy during braking. But regenerative braking and reaccelerating for the same average speed will always use more energy than coasting. You can't get more energy back from all the energy conversions than by conserving momentum. If you have a different impression, you should brush up on your physics.
@jamesverdon1346
@jamesverdon1346 Год назад
@@chrisvanderstock Porsche have the same system as BYD. A Porsche engineer wrote an article explaining what @larryevans6739.explained. above. The braking system is manufactured by Bosch.
@larryevans6739
@larryevans6739 Год назад
@@jamesverdon1346 It isn't the exact same system, but the operation is similar. However, it shouldn't have to take a detailed study to prove that coasting is more efficient than multiple energy conversions associated with regenerative braking and re-acceleration back up to speed. Concepts like the conservation of momentum, conservation of energy and there being no perfect conversions of energy (no ideal machine) should be common knowledge. We really need to expand our understanding of science and engineering in the West. If you want to know why China is pulling ahead in technology, look at how many engineers they graduate each year.

@@chrisvanderstock Do you not understand that braking recovers to regen first in this car, this failure to understand this point is why most reviewers argue for higher levels of regen.

17:10 if you change the steering mode to sport, you will find that it's much better. I think it's because the comfort mode steering provides too much assistance and it make it harder for the car to detect if your hands are on the wheel. I agree, the Batman tyres are awful, changing to Continental 235's does make a significant difference to both ride, noise and handling (but remember to increase the tyre pressure to around 40psi as the tyres have increased internal volume due to them having a 20mm increase in cross section).

I've had my Atto3 for about 6 weeks and I'm quite happy with the braking. I find the regen acceptable and I'm ok with it increasing the regen by using the brake pedal. I don't mind the multiple options for the electronic park brake. I think having to press the unlock button is a good safety feature - avoiding possible accidental bumps to the selector. Also, I'm yet to have mine beep at me to hold the steering wheel.

@0:40 - the PARK BRAKE is different from the GEAR! Press down on the letter "P" on the GEAR lever to put the car into PARK. The binnacle shows you are in PARK mode. If you are in DRIVE mode and you pull up on the console's "P" lever you will engage the parking BRAKE. The binnacle will show you are still in "D" or DRIVE mode while the brake will remain engaged until you release it by again pulling on the console's lever. The concept is exactly the same as having a hand brake lever you can use.

The regen whilst different in Atto3 to Tesla it is smoother for passengers and closer to what you get in an ICE auto car. Makes the transition easier. Currently at $16.5k cheaper than the Tesla Model Y and getting an opening roof, sunblind and V2L included but not available on Tesla!

It is built to a price and is a family SUV, not a Tesla or a race car or a performance car. You are working excessively hard to find any type of anomaly you can find, then call it a fault. Is it perfect, no of course not. However your review really wants to hate this car, where in fact it does everything well, room for improvement certainly. Switchgear is what you would expect for this price. Tyres after nearly 7k of ownership are absolutely perfect for the way this car was designed to be driven. My brand new X trail screens do exactly the same as this when going through a small tunnel, most auto headlight cars do exactly the same thing.
