ABOUT LUDICROUS FEED
Ludicrous Feed is a Sydney-based RU-vid channel that started in 2018 after Tom purchased his Tesla Model S. He wanted to show the reality of Australian daily life with his family and an electric vehicle. Tom provides straightforward candid insights into key issues around EV adoption such as vehicle range, charging infrastructure and road trip planning. Thanks Tom and Joy for your insights, I agree if you live in a major city and you have access to a wall charger then all three vehicles are fit for purpose. If you carry a lot of gear need roof racks or tow then Y and Atto are good choices, if you require better ground clearance then Y and Atto are great choices if you want best efficiency with sports car acceleration and handling then model 3 is king. Don’t get hung up on Tesla charging system once you travel regionally you’ll be lining up with everyone else for unreliable regional fast DC charging systems. No fast or super chargers north of Sunshine Coast here in Qld. However if you have to bail to AC charging your Tesla will charge quicker than any Atto for sure. For most of us who do the occasional road trip I guess it boils down to how much money do you really want to invest in driving the kids around and doing the shopping. I reckon service goes to Tesla and warranty goes to Atto. Resale probably Tesla 😁👍

Hi Tom and Joy. Great to see what the missus has to say, a woman's perspective on any car is always different to a blokes. My wife just got the Atto3 and she loves everything about it. When she let's me drive I enjoy giving it a bit more 'stick'. I think it handles really well, that battery on a low centre of gravity gives it a feeling like she's on rails. All the range / charger anxiety isn't an issue with us, because we still have the ICE Pajero, which now seems so noisy and stinky, but good for longer, dirt roads when we go travelling. We use the Atto3 for everyday run arounds and typically no more than 40km/day. We've only recharged with the supplied 8 amp granny, whilst we're producing solar power from our 6kW PV array on the house. So, it's not cost us anything to recharge and we haven't used any coal. The price difference between BYD and Tesla is quite significant and that's why comparing the two makes is not really a good idea. Love all the reviews though, thanks.

Our first EV is gonna be an ATTO. We were considering a KIA Sportage or Seltos but for the trim we wanted n the price we decided it was time to give it a go. Still waiting for it to be delivered. The Chinese EVs are essential to make it more affordable for the average person, not everyone can stump up $50-70k for a vehicle. Though more investment in EV infrastructure is definitely needed esp rural areas. Australia is such a big country. An Atto could also be a good choice as a 2nd EV as well.

Great points. Indeed the Kia Sportage is similar in size, I posted a photo with it parked next to the Atto 3 and the size is comparable. Agreed that EVs from China will make it affordable to many.

@@LudicrousFeed we have a long way to go for mainstream EV adoption. A lot of other things to to consider: - end of life - Battery recycling - how the grid will cope as EVs are adopted - the adherrant limitations of charging for those in say apartment blocks, on street parking only properties etc - proper legislation in place - things like that Vic EV road tax received a lot of backlash. - instead of a subsidy why not put that into more infrastructure. Would be good to see more EV chargers at major service stations. Reliability as well, how to improve that.

Can you find out or do a video if Meriton is implementing EV charging for all property owners and if they’re providing enough off-street parking for residents and visitors? We completed a 7,000km trip thru Vic, NSW and QLD a few months ago in our M3 LR. No issues with charging as this was mostly done thru destination chargers at motels, Hotels etc. Used the Tesla super charger network a few times but the charging cost is higher so preferred to use other options where possible. Overall our charging cost was $40 for the entire trip. The model-3 is a very comfortable vehicle and happy we purchased this vehicle.

Recently had the free 3 month safety service BYD provides. Living 250 km away from the only Victorian service centre make it a pain, so glad I won't have another service for 10 months. Did an OTA on the Atto 3 yesterday...went smoothly, took about half an hour.

I have both m3 and atto. 2 points the power consumption for the atto i find is more 15 to 16 kwh per 100 kms and then there is a great sunroof and sunshade that has multiple settings of ventillation opening. Value for money the atto is remarkable

Great Video Tom! The one thing that buyers forget in their purchasing decision is purely sticker price NOT TCO which is what fleet managers look at over say 5yrs or even 10yrs depending on how long they keep vehicles generally. Where lower price ICE vehicles become more costly when TCO is taken into consideration. There is a 3rd party Frunk for the Atto 3 available, there may be more options now than there was originally. I think it comes down to budget in the end, for myself that's a $20k difference which I would rather have the $20k for travel or other things than into car payments.

My advise from America and a M3 owner. Buying a non-Tesla for home/city use is just fine. You will mostly charge from home and when your in the city you might out of convenience use a local charger. If that charger fails no worries because your close to home. Most people do one maybe two road trips a year. So buy the car that really fits your needs in your day to day life not so much for those one or two trips you might do in a year. If in your life you make trips out of town to a set location say like family, look to see what chargers are on route, how many per location and history of reliability for that network before buying a non-Tesla. Don't get sucked into buying a car just because it is electric. The market is maturing so buy a electric car that drives right for you and fits your needs. If it is not on the market yet then hold off instead of pushing a bad choice. My country's third party networks are really bad here in the States and I'm not even going into dealer price gouging. I bought my base M3 because of the LFP, direct sales (no stress) and Super Charger network. Even just doing a day trip to the next city/town up the motorway/highway for lunch or shopping it gives me piece of mind that nearby is a Super Charger to top up on the return trip. Can your Tesla's charge on third party networks with an adapter like we have in the States? If you do that is a game changer for Tesla and a buying point to have access to all networks.

Thanks Robert and I would reiterate that same advice. We’ve done a 890km Sydney to Melbourne road trip in the BYD and like it is in the US, Australia’s non-Tesla DC charger network leaves a lot to be desired currently. Hopefully things improve for all of us in this decade 🙏 PS yes, Model 3/Y can use (most) third party networks without an adaptor in Australia

@Andrew Palozzo When I bought my M3 it was just a tool for me and my family. I needed the super charger network. My fall back was resale value if I didn't like the car. I am happy to say that as just a car the driving dynamic is the best car I have ever own. The control I have over the car makes me feel safe at any speed and I just have the base model. Try and test drive a car and evaluate it as a car, ignore the software. I can guarantee you that she will sell you first on her dynamics. Good luck

Between 28th December and January 9th we took our Atto 3 all the way to Mackay stopping in Brisbane and Bundaberg on the way. On the way there and back found that the combination of QESH in QLD and Evie/Chargefox in NSW was more than enough to cover us for our trip 🎉

The extra speed, space and lower charging time plus Tesla supercharger network are why I'm very happy with our MY purchase... plus the potential for FSD in the hopefully not too distant future.

One year on since you made this as it’s still spot on. I am trying to determine what to buy between Model Y, Model 3 and Atto 3. I currently have the BYD in my garage as a hire car. I think this has confirmed Model 3 for me. Was very interested in the long distance space feedback on your trips. I assumed the Model 3 would have been the smaller than the Atto 3,but perhaps its boot is bigger than I thought. Thanks so much. 👍🏽

If you’re going to do long drives, save yourself the hassle and buy the Tesla. The current 2022/3 Atto 3 has incompatibility issues with V3/4 Tesla superchargers which are yet to be resolved by BYD

Interesting perception of the boot space of the M3 as its rated 425L front+back while Atto3 is rated 440L but it fits more? Upon my research into whether to get a MY or an Atto3 I've found the MY seems to be a tier higher than the Atto3 in build quality, size and performance. What i didn't like is the hard suspension. We usually use our car as a shopping cart not doing road trips the Atto3 fits our needs more than adequately, especially it's smaller and easier to fit in parking spaces for inner city living.

Hey Tom & Joy I have Model 3 LR delivered 23 Dec 2022 & loving it. On delivery I noticed a chip in the front bumper, booked a service straight away & had the bumper respirated in 4 day. Very impressed. As I had a loan M3 RWD it was interesting to note the differences. Audio system has no bass compared to premium systems but still OK. Had the power reduced a couple of times due to wheel slip which I haven’t experienced in AWD LR. Acceleration is no where as fast but acceptable but regen is reduced I guess as there’s only 1 motor recharging the batteries & I noticed the front dips during regen not noticed in the AWD. Not a fan of white, mine is black but overall the RWD did feel a cheaper car.

Very good review . You have never commented on panel fit and gaps and also paint quality. The BYD Atto 3 here is the clear winner on quality control but I suppose it is early days of production.

Slightly off topic, but, having just owned one of the budget, I mean, most affordable, EV’s in Australia, I can say the experience is still a nightmare, with a dealer and manufacturer not wanting to admit to the many faults of the vehicle. Which leads me onto the point of, cheaper does not mean better. What is the BYD going to look like after 5 years of driving? Australia is short on EV’s at the price point the masses need them, until then, Tesla is the most halfway suitable.

A little more discussion about the battery systems would be good in this comparison, as they are quite different. My understanding is that there are substantial benefits to lithium iron phosphate in general, and in the blade battery in particular. It was a big factor for me in choosing the Atto3. Battery life may also be much better, although time will eventually tell.

Another great review video guys!! Loving this channel. One thing that seems to be missed though is towing capability on EVs. What does the BYD and Tesla offer here? Or at least the ability to fit a tow bar for carrying bicycles, etc. Plus ground clearance can be a deciding factor on what EV you would choose, especially for those with steep driveways or just the confidence you're not going to scrub your front bumper in shopping centre carparks, etc.

Yup great points. EV Stealth Solutions offer after market solutions for EV towing in Australia. Tesla offer in-house tow kits for Model Y. Yes EVs generally have a lower ground clearance when compared to their ICE equivalents given their skateboard battery design

@@ptrsrrll Hi Peter. Interesting reading which MY you've bought. You're slightly more senior in age to me as I've just turned 65. I too have purchased a MY but only the RWD standard option in white. After reading about your purchase, I'm wondering if i should have gone for the same MY version. I feel as though I aspire to the car with all the bells and whistles but have ended up buying the version with all the plastic covers in place where the switches go on the top of the range model. A constant reminder that "I should have worked harder!"

To me that’s sounds like they don’t believe it will handle Aussie roads or is it an EV direct thing, apparently the Kiwis have a much better deal. I drove a number of EV’s before buying our BYD Atto 3 , 3 months ago. I have been absolutely blown away by the value for money of the Atto. We have had no problems with the car and will seriously consider a BYD Seal when they arrive. Our other car is a Mercedes GLC 300 Coupe. The EV I was expecting to buy for our city run around was the Mercedes EQA 250. I was shocked at the price compared to the Atto and the compromises in the EQA. I wonder how the Atto and EQA would would rank in a test even though one is at the cheap end and one is supposedly premium. Maybe you could do a comparison. I also drove both Tesla 3 and Y and seriously had my finger poised over the buy button a few times. What held me back mostly (so far anyway) was the feeling that they were not premium feeling for the premium price and the ride quality I could not live with in the performance variants.

I am buying Atto 3 because I think it’s narrower than either Tesla (my parking space is narrow). Tom, I think you said Model 3 is narrower but I saw a wider measurement for Model 3 (including wing mirrors).

Yes you're right, I had quoted without mirrors. Tesla website states 2088mm including mirrors; 1933mm with folded mirrors and 1849mm excluding mirrors. Whereas Atto 3 is 1875mm with mirrors. Good spot

Would be interesting if you can get a friend whose never driven, or considered an EV and get them to drive a few types and see what they think. The comparisons are interesting, but you’ll always have a biase and a range of personal experiences to fall back on, where that first time EV shopper may have nothing to fall back on and have to make a choice based on first impressions.

Great to see a comparison between the Atto 3 and the model 3/Y. The comparison is completely justified, but it’s a reflection of where we are at presently because the reason these are being compared is simply because they’re EVs. It’s unusual in the ICE market to see comparisons between cars with such a price variance.

I drive an Atto 3 here in China. Can anyone confirm that when the car is plugged and charging at a fast charger and you are inside the car with the engine on and the AC on there is a loud running noise comming from the front hood like an engine or something. I got the same noise when I start the AC remotely from the BYD app to cool down the car before I reach to it in the parking lot during hot days. When I drive the car normally I don't hear that sound. Also I noticed that when I increase the AC fan speed the noise is louder. Is it the heat pump? Why I don’t hear this noise when I drive the car normally with the AC on? Is this normal? Thanks!

Great comparison. Have been considering MY vs Atto 3 and test driven both. Some considerations not mentioned: - MY 40/20/40 split folding rear seats. This is quite important to me. Especially with baby seats in both rear seats and the desire to put something longer through the middle. - for people who care for audio, the sound system on the MY is way better - Atto 3 comes with portable granny charger for free Subjectively: - check seat comfort in both depending on body type - exterior aesthetic, I think the MY is not a nice looking car

There is an interesting article in today's Sun-Herald about driving a Polestar 2 from Sydney to Perth. It concurs with your comments about charging infrastructure. From what I can read, over the next 12 months or so there will be a reasonable choice of EVs for Australians to buy. All of which will be good - some even great. Personal preference will be the deciding factor. However, while it is improving, the availability and reliability of the DC charging infrastructure will be what determines the EV driving experience when not using just home charging. PS: was the cafe in St Ives Showground open?

Hi does the Atto3 auto hold on brakes ie literally hold the car when it comes to a stop automatically like my Tesla Model 3? that is the best bit about driving a Tesla as you never have to worry when slowing down at traffic lights etc as the car just holds itself. Good question. To clarify: 1. Atto 3 doesn't have one-pedal driving and will not come to a complete stop by itself 2. When you activate the Auto-Hold button: if you press the brakes hard enough, the car will hold itself at a stop. 3. You don't need to activate the auto-hold button each time. Once you do it, it will remember the setting even if you start a new drive Hope this helps

I have owned a model Y for almost a year now, and we need a new car. So I went for a Atto 3 test drive today with the intent of buying one as a 2nd car. We ended up getting another Tesla, here are the pros and cons I came up with as I tried to push myself into getting the cheaper Atto 3. CONS: No phone key, have to use a physical key (and you only get 1, $400 for an extra) Terrible tires (borderline unsafe in the wet) (decent tires are about $1800) No seat/wheel position memory No automatic driver profiles No support for multiple spotify (or any media) accounts Less power/performance Front wheel drive (feels worse to drive, you get torque steering when accelerating, less controllable) Worse lane centering/cruise control Much less storage No one pedal driving No semi-automatic indicators No always on dash cam (sentry mode) Barely any functionality from the phone app Requires actual servicing (I asked what they did, basically nothing + some filters) 80 kw p/h max charge speeds (Teslas are over 200 kw p/h) Doesn't handle as well when driving, a bit touchy and jumpy both in braking and accelerating. Can't limit the height of the auto open boot by location Infotainment system is balls, software is terrible in comparison More reliabity issues (still not too bad compared to other cars) Built in navigation is meh, satilite connection is spotty. Stuck using third party chargers, not able to use the Tesla charger network Speakers are meh Less real world range than a similar Tesla Can't change the volume of the indicators, they are stupidly loud. PROS: 25% cheaper than a new Tesla Android auto support Built in 240v powerpoint Has an OEM heads up display.

You don't need to use a key with the Atto 3. Put it in your pocket and you can unlock it. It's a proximity key. Same goes with starting. If the key is close just press start with foot on the brake. Fob never needs to leave your pocket. I don't notice the power difference between the Y and Atto 3. Who is going to stamp it above 100 kW?

Thanks for this review. I have a Atto 3 and have just ordered a MY. It's funny how the two vehicles external dimensions are so similar and yet the MY seems to be so much bigger, especially inside. The available load space in the rear of the MY is cavernous! The Model Y drive I thought superior to the Atto 3 and felt more firm but I really do enjoy the Atto 3 too. Both are wonderful EVs.

I still have a Model S 70D with a NMC chemistry. For many years I just charged to 80% for my daily use which was enough. If ever I needed more charge for the day, I would then slide it to a higher requirement as needed.

Looking forward to my Atto 3 delivery, finding it tricky to maintain patience... Already upgraded the home solar PV from 3 to 10kw, and gearing up to install level 2 home charging. As an electrician was swayed to the Atto 3 from Tesla option due to V2L, but was disappointed to discover the Atto 3 's V2L output is only 220V AC. This is too low for some applications/appliances and I think a deliberate choice by BYD to disable using it to run an off grid weekend cabin or time shifting electricity use in a custom V2H set up. It will run resistive loads, camping fridges, computers etc, but might struggle with portable induction cooktops. Can anyone try to test run a portable induction cooktop please? @@sparkytas 220V is a compliant level. Our DNSP's, are legally obliged to keep our voltage between 230V -6%, +15%. 216.2V is our minimum compliant voltage. Nearly every electrical product you buy will have a voltage range between 220-240V.

A very good review. I think you need to also take into account resale value. The true cost of the car is what you paid minus what you sell it for. I know the numbers are not available yet but I suspect the Tesla will have the better resale thus reducing the price difference. Tesla also has the big advantage of the supercharger network. I’m surprised they are opening it up as it’s their big advantage when purchasing.

I hear so much about the Supercharger network advantage, but in reality, most Tesla drivers now have an option and are choosing to not pay for Superchargers. Read the grumpy posts from EV drivers having to queue for public chargers full of Teslas while the Tesla superchargers down the road are empty. I have nothing against Tesla drivers using free or cheaper charging options, heck I would too if I were them, but I don’t think they are the selling point they were years ago. The only way to keep those tesla chargers serviceable and open is to unlock them so they can make money off everyone.

The only time you will see a big difference is when you are in an accident. I personally am very interested in collision tests for the BYD. In real life Testa proved that they made very safe cars, strong, light but very expensive to repair after you get into an accident.

Just one point though regarding your comment on the “heads up display” (HUD) at 15:33 I know I may be accused of pedantry Tom, but when you refer to the “heads up display” in the BYD, you are actually talking about the PHYSICAL driver’s instrument binnacle in front of the driver and behind the steering wheel. However, it is universally accepted in the motor industry that the term “heads up display” specifically refers to the projection on the WINDSCREEN of driving data such as speed, etc. I think it is very important to note the distinction between the two, because they are quite different.

I am currently shopping for my first EV. I decided the Model Y is just too long and wide as I will do almost exclusively city driving. This video is interesting to me because when looking at all the pros and cons, I also narrowed it down to the Model 3 and the Atto. I do feel the Model 3 is the better car overall, but it has several cons that keep the Atto in sight: - I have back problems and promised myself I wouldn't buy another car with a low entry. - the Tesla is much less comfortable (sporty, but do you need that when it's just a daily driver?) - the panoramic roof is nice but it's fixed and there's no screen either (hot in summer?). - more trunk space but accessibility is worse than the Atto. - still a bit longer than the Atto (worse for city driving). - minimalist is fine, but some ambience in the cabin would be appreciated. Now, considering these cons, if the price would be so much more in my country (Belgium) than you list here, I would just go with the Atto and be perfectly happy. But here the Atto costs 46740€, and the Model 3 is just 430€ more expensive, at 47170€. And when the price is the same, shouldn't I go for the better, more established car (with probably a better resale value)?

For your bad back the Tesla can automatically adjust the sear back and up for you to get in. Then press the memory button for your driving position. There is a shade available for the glass roof in summer. Enjoy your Tesla

The warranty with the Atto3 in AU was a EV Direct thing. Look at the warranty in NZ - leaps & bounds better just like the Tesla. I think once you leave the heavily travelled east cost of AU the superchargers do not exist in the same quantity/distance. So the charging monopoly debate starts to wear thin. Plus with the recently announced government grant, Tesla will need to open up their chargers to all EVs even if not at all the stalls at a site. I think the Seal will compete very well with the Tesla M3 when it arrives. It looks leaps & bounds better too. The BYD comes with a free UMC. While Tesla wants $550 for one unless your delivery is in Q1 2023. The other option is a wall charger with both cars. People buy the Tesla for the tech rather than anything else where it does excel at.

It all comes down to what you need your Ev for and the price. My Atto 3 is a city car it won't be going over any state borders on a long road trip If I need to cross state borders I fly and hire a car there if I need one, this is what I have done for the past 20 years, so there are some of us out there that don't do long road trips, so how fast its chargers is irrelevant and most smart people who do, would plan their charging times around rest breaks. It would be good Tom if you did some other Ev comparisons against the Tesla model 3 and Y with the MG ZS EV, Polestar and the MG 4 when it's available, so you just don't seem to be singling out the Atto 3. On a side note, my 2022 Atto 3 is $3,630 cheaper than the prices you quoted against the Tesla model 3 and Y as I could have ordered all 3 Evs in 2022.

I’m thankful to EV direct for loaning us the Atto 3 for an extended period of time hence I felt confident enough to be able to provide a fair comparison against the 3/Y. I’d be happy to do the same for the other brands should the same opportunity arise in the future

@Ludicrous Feed let's be honest Tom the Atto 3 is in a different vehicle category to both Tesla models. A more direct comparison would be between the BYD Seal sedan and the Tesla model 3 and the BYD Sealion if it gets sold here against the Tesla model Y.

Sandy Munro has done a lot reviews on teslas I’m not sure about the byds. But he mentioned how far ahead they are with there technology and engineering of motors and heat pumps compared to other EV manufacturers. In my view buying a tesla is a no brainer.

I do not think the value proposition to buy a new electric car is there even for these cars . For 50k you can get a good Tucson for example. It will depreciate much less and you would not have to worry on longer trips. Maintenance and fuel cost saving on EV are greatly offset by the depreciation, cost of insurance, extra cost for tyres. The value proposition is there only with a novated lease and incentives. This is why I got a model y but other than that I would carefully consider to go EV for a new car

After over 3 months Atto 3 ownership I can't say the tyres are an issue for "normal" driving. To get the tyres to slip I have had to push the car in a way I would not normally. If you are an aggressive driver, then change the tyres to something better, but otherwise most town car drivers could happily wait until they need replacing.

Why? are you going to be racing a BYD? I don't understand why people want to waste money on tyres all the time. They are fine if you drive to the conditions but if you think you are some kind of race driver then go ahead and waste money

I agree the tyres are fine ….”fit for purpose” So many bang on about the tyres & 99% of them have never driven on them. I’ve now done 8500km majority of it @ highway speeds (300km commute) each way & weekly in some atrocious wet weather & 38c some trips. I’ve not had a issue…if you drive it like you stole it then sure you’ll lose traction….most vehicles lose traction in the wet. But the vast majority don’t drive like that.

As some of you may know, we’ve driven from Sydney to Melbourne and back again on the Atlas Batman tyres (~1800km)
