Worse yet, for the last 30 years in the US, we've been building midrise (3-7 story) apartment buildings with wood framing. Before then, the structure would have been reinforced masonry. If an EV fire starts under one of these newer buildings, they'll burn more quickly and may even collapse.

I’ve done some maths here in New Zealand and without any cost allowed for recycling or other environmental disposal of solar or wind. I calculated that at today’s prices if our country was 100% renewable - wind and solar and battery predominantly then every New Zealand household would have to pay $2000 a year to continue the maintenance of the system, my figures did not include any updates or upgrades to the transmission system at self, nor any charge for the electricity itself!- Merely the price of replacing the hardware I allowed 15 years for wind turbines and 25 for solar. I also did not include any price for electric vehicle charging stations as that was quite a variable in terms of what number would potentially be required how many vehicles could be charged at home etc but of course that would be another significant expense that ultimately all users would have to pay for The unbelievable part is that it would appear. The government has not done the most basic calculations to figure this out for itself - not just in New Zealand but most of the western world.

We need to Keep on repeating, “how often something happens is not the deciding factor when accessing its hazard and the risk it presents”. ‘Risk Assessment’ is calculated by looking at the likelihood of something that can happen and multiplying it by the severity of the hazard that it can cause. Therefore Something trivial can happen all the time and still be low risk, because it is easily managed. whereas a hazard that is catastrophic only needs to happen just the once, so is deemed high risk.

The ICE fires compared to the EV fires seems like its not comparing like for like. An ICE fire is, i assume, likely to be mainly at the scene of a collision, or possibly as a result of spilled fuel contacting a source of ignition. So there is a viable way to anticipate potential fires. If your car hasnt been in a crash or isnt leaking fuel, it wont just burst into flames. EV fires though, from what I understand, can occur at literally any time. There seems to be no viable way to anticipate a fire. That to me, seems signifcantly more dangerous.

Combustion fires due to collision is usually fluids onto hot engine or components. A hose line rupturing or disconnecting and spraying in the engine bay while driving or an electrical fault is also common. EV fire in collision due to the battery rupturing is extremely rare as the batteries are extremely well protected and it would take a massive hit. Any fire once it starts is an issue regardless of what type of car it is. If a fuel tank ruptures and fire or a spark comes into contact then the ground around the car catches fire, runs down drains, goes into the bush etc. Heck, pulling over onto dry grass in your combustion car car cause a fire simply due to a hot exhaust. Something an EV could never do. Fire is bad no matter how it starts

I spent 23 years as an operational fireman in the UK (1988 - 2011) and went to many ICE vehicle fires. Since this EV grift started I've been thinking about how many of these incidents I attended where the cause of the fire was down to the collision or fault of the vehicle etc? I'll admit that this was obviously the case at times, however, and I guess my memory could be playing tricks on me here but, I'll suggest that the majority were caused intentionally - car thieves, fraudulent insurance claims, vehicles being close to another fire etc. Cars bursting into flames in collisions, or soon after, were pretty rare in my experience, they were also extinguished reasonably quickly. It would be interesting to hear other emergency service workers' opinion on attending these incidents - and to see if my somewhat shady recollection is correct or not haha. I also attended some vehicle fire incidents that were primarily caused by a fault with the electrical systems, oh the irony😁.

Next would be home battery chargers hooked up to the 12v in the garage overnight, then cars parking on the roadside in longish grass with a hot exhaust. Only been to a few fires caused by high impact collision, but again these are likely to have been fuel lines and hot engines being damaged at impact.

Correct. Many studies have shown a pro-rata difference of 30 times as many for ICE fires against BEV fires. Not just numbers but per million cars in each fleet. Of course an EV fire is harder to extinguish but in a car park sprinklers would prevent a spread to the entire area, even if they don't put the isolated fire out. And sprinklers would then enable fire fighters to deal with the original problem - whether ICE or EV.

@@tommyking626 You make a good point. But there are other distortions to also consider. Most ICE car fires are actually electrical faults. And they can develop at any time in a cars life. Also, the early EV battery chemistry was much more prone to issues and they have more recently been addressed so that today you can hammer nails through some battery packs without causing a fire. Over time, EVs will become much less likely to have fires caused by the battery pack and instead just revert to the fires from arson, and 12v electrical problems. Some distortion also caused by some authorities counting all lithium battery fires in one category so that scooters, electric bikes, and even skateboards are classified in the same count. So that whilst you are right to question the age of vehicles it may well develop into even less EV fires as the aged , more prone fleet are scrapped. Whilst the ICE fleet ages at the same rate of fires that have always been recorded. So that the pro-rata % figures widen even more than presently seen.

Have you seen about the car showroom fire in Bristol three days ago caused by an EV.

Simon, you have excelled here. The reaction from the fan boys is terrific. How dare you suggest that the core of an EV is not a benign gift from the gods. Many grabbing and twisting dubious and selective stats to support their beliefs. Keep it up as it will mean that they are all at home tapping away on the keys while their EV is charging in the garage and getting closer and closer to thermal runaway. There is much that is not included in vehicle fires reporting both ICE and EV that is not apparent in how they are presented. Remember that any quasi Government organisation or business that needs a good public profile will only report the minimum required by Legislation and only as much as needed to obtain the result that they want the public to see and believe.
