China's EV giant, BYD, makes more electric vehicles than any of its competitors and sells them for as low as $10,000. The cars are not yet sold in the U.S., where hurdles include a 25% import tariff. Meanwhile, U.S. lawmakers are concerned that smart car technology could be used to spy on American drivers. NBC News' Janis Mackey Frayer reports.

It's cheap, sorry. You're Chinese, Hong, so your bias will bleed heavily here. It's commendable to sell cars at $10,000 but corners will be cut for a price that low. I think China is capable of producing quality but it's just not worth it for you guys, the profit is too good. You must drive GDP up at all costs, even if it undercuts important priorities, which is your government's policy. Kias and Hyundais sell for about $40,000 and are still cheaply made. These cars have severe engine problems, faded paint, falling plastic trims, and burnt lights when they're less than one year old...China is notorious for this too but arguably at even a more severe degree.

BYD bought and retrofitted Ford’s Motor Olant in Camaçari BA Brazil. I am sure they are going after Ford franchised dealerships. Made in Brazil is a big deal for Brazilian car buyers. They want access to spares when needed. As for Renault’s lack of success with its own KWID , that model is based of a legacy ICE econobox. Not a smart buy , probably not a great range , in a country with a scant number in points of recharge.
@FabioCapela
@FabioCapela 28 дней назад
@@serafinacosta7118 It's not just that Brazilian customers are big on local production; Brazil also has pretty high import tariffs on cars, which at 35% makes importing cars just not competitive with locally produced models. That tariff is currently partially waived for EVs, but will be reinstated even for them in a few years. This is why Ford is being essentially ejected from the market after having chosen to stop local production; with it now having to pay those tariffs on all local car sales it simply can't compete with the likes of GM, VW, Fiat, etc, all of which have local production, or even BYD and GWM, whose local production hasn't started yet but whose import tariffs are currently lower due to them selling mostly EVs.

It’s a tough issue. There is no way that even with innovation that US makers could compete with the Chinese. The economics of employing a US workforce vs Chinese is vast. Look at most sectors the Chinese compete in. So that leaves allowing the wholesale import of BYD. OK, so what then? No US manufacturing. Then what? I’m not arguing for things one way or another, but realistically how is this matter addressed? Tack on a tariff? Ok, so that would be reciprocated if it hasn’t been already. Then what?

Let's tell the truth about the subsidies instead of misleading people: government subsidy is for the whole EV industry: 1. Government requirements for install charging stations in every expressway rest stops, shopping mall parking lots and quick permits process installing in residential compounds etc. 2. 10% of registration tax (sales tax) is waived for EVs, but this includes all brands, domestic or imported, such as Tesla, BYD, VW, any EV from any brands, made anywhere 3. Grants for battery research (there're government funding available for research on new type of batteries or improvement of existing batteries. University research labs as well as companies can all apply 4. In some cities (mainly Shanghai and Beijing), license plate is not immediately available, but rather a lottery system is established for ICE cars, and fee is high, meanwhile, EVs can register and get license plate right away 5. For the first couple of years, auto makers get a cash back for every EV they make, but soon it was abolished because the government found that some auto makers make the worst EV at the lowest cost that's possible, just to claim the cash back. That lasted a couple of years. Again, the cash back is for all EV makers, not just BYD or domestic manufactures. Conclusion: BYD is able of building a $10,000 car is not because of government subsidies, but rather because of its efficiency and automation and vertical integration. When I worked in China 15 years ago, BYD started research on LFP batteries already, and they firmly believed it was one of the best technology for EVs. NBC should tell the truth, not mislead people.

@1.25, the commentator said that "...for a limited time to allow the US manufacturers to catch up..." That is the general theme that has been thrown around, but ultimately, it failed. In Australia, the one locally designed and manufactured car, the Holden brand, was protected by the government by...yes, tariffs. Japanese cars were better, more consumer focused, and would you believe it? Cheaper. The government was desperate to have a local car industry for employment as well as prestige, being a car manufacturing nation. Despite the tariffs on the Japanese cars, Australians still chose them over the Holden cars because of many factors. Quality of finish, economy, value for money despite the extra tariffs on top of them, and reliability, finally closed the chapter for Holden, and the Australian government's desperate desire to have a car industry. So how long can tariffs protect US car industry? It depends on how patient are US consumers. When they realized that they have been ripped off by the government and the car industry, they would choose to cope the tariffs and buy imported cars, and stuff the patriotism bit.

I doubt it would happen due to BYD having to build them here first due to regulations and tariffs. Otherwise I heard they are planning to build them in Mexico to keep costs down from importing them from China.

Yes but vertical integration is the key word, they practically make everything by themselves...very little outsourcing. They even own the mines that dig up the materials for their batteries as well as the huge ships that transport their vehicles to overseas markets.

Cars are too expensive in the US. You buy a new car today and after 5 years it loses tis value completely! Why do we then need to spend so much money?

C'mon man, it's just 27% import tariff. As Malaysian we need to pay 100% import duty for CBU cars.
