BYD Dolphin - out of its depth?

BYD may be a new name to the British car market, but they aren't exactly a minnow when it comes to the size of their business; or intent. We drove the ATTO 3 crossover/SUV back in March which waded straight into battle in one of the most fiercely contested market sectors. And now here they are, yet again choosing one of the most popular areas of the UK market, the C-sector 5 door family hatchback? Does the Dolphin have a few tricks up its sleeves, or will it be a bit of a damp squid? Armed with one of the most thorough road test reviews, not to mention some seriously corny puns, Bryan puts it through its paces to deliver the only verdict that matters - the AutoEV one.
AutoEV - all electric, all independent.

British Expat here! I've been driving my BYD for nearly a year and I could not be happier. I've owned Ford UK, Ford US, Audi, BMW, Austin, MG, Mercedes Benz, Suzuki in the past and this is by far my favourite car, for so many reasons.

I bought the Dolphin Extended (150 kW, 60 kWh) here in Thailand about a month ago. The Dolphin is cheaper here in Thailand. It costs about GBP 20,000. After 3,000 kilometres I am happy with my decision. It is not perfect but fulfils my need as a daily driver. The car is very comfortable. I also looked at the MG 4, which looks better but misses some comfort features.
@SRNoobR

Hi, may I know what comfort features the Dolphin has that the MG4 does not?
8 месяцев назад
@@SRNoobR Here in Thailand the MG4 has no rear windscreen wiper, no middle arm rest, only 1 USB port in the back and no electric adjustable seats. The Dolphin is also a more comfortable car. But the MG 4 looks better and the RWD gives a better feeling while driving.
@StephenLawrence01
@StephenLawrence01 8 месяцев назад
@ MY MG4 in Thailand has electric adjustable seats but once adjusted you are not going to move them again much. The ride and handling are streets ahead of the Dolphin with it's dreadful cheap tyres - making it noisy and a bumpy uncomfortable ride, so chose the MG4.
8 месяцев назад
@@StephenLawrence01 Thank you for the update! The electric seats in the Dolphin have quite a good range of adjustments. The Chinese tyres on my Dolphin Ext. are quite good, far more better than expected. For me, the Dolphin has a more comfortable ride than the MG4. But there is a huge difference between the standard model (torsion beam) and the top model (multi-link). I prefer the style and the driving dynamics of the MG4, but the Dolphin was the better solution for my needs.

Just return from China, This car sells very well in China, I see it everywhere. Went for a drive in my friend's and I liked it. Its very comfortable inside. Big screen in the middle is great for apple car play. Heaps of leg room in the back for a small car. Boot is bit small but don't really mind. They got the smallest battery, but still heaps for couple of days of urban commute, just charge it backup at night when the eletricity is cheaper. For longer trips, everyone just chose to use the high speed rail anyway.

Why are these British reviewers so biased against BYD and all prefer the MG4. This car is priced very close to MG 4 in China as it is in UK. And it is the best selling BEV right now selling 22 thounsand units in August. And MG4 (called Mulan in China) is a car that no one is buying here in China. If you compare these two cars side by side, you will find the Dolphin beats the MG4 in almost every aspect that you can think of apart from the "handling". The dolphin has better battery technology, saftey and comfort features, interior material quality and finish and back space, computer chips and screens and software. Also, the dolphin has a heat pump and panoramic roof, which is both missing on a MG4. Just sit in these two cars like I did, and take a look at the spec sheets of both. You will find the value they offer are not comparable. I find it funny that this reviewer complained twice about the plastic of the interior, find me a EV at this price level has less plastic. The material of the Dolphin is about as good as you can get for a EV of similar price. Most of time it's "all right" and "OK" by the reviewer. And the 7s 0-100km is just "enough" for him, again find me a car with faster acceleration at same price. Maybe they still regard MG as an "established" brand originating in UK. But in terms of EV, BYD is way more "established" than MG.

Agreed! So many UK reviewers talking about MG as a “British” brand is gone beyond the joke level now. Why they don’t also call Nissan a British brand now, also puzzles me - Nissan have done more for UK employment than “original” MG did 40 years ago. Personally, I will try to avoid buying Chinese cars for as long as I can. Even though, most cars now have at least some Chinese components. That is for political reasons, as I object to Chinese political policy on many issues- e.g. South China Sea, human rights, freedom of speech. It bothers me, how much Chinese origin products that I already have! Plastics- yes, this scratchy plastic complaint is wearisome - particularly as I’m sure many reviewers are not aware of why soft plastics and hard plastics make a difference - apart from scratchiness ! How many people actually get into their car and scratch different surfaces ? As for interior colour, yes, there was a time when BMC cars (MG’s original parent company) back in the 1960s and 70s had mostly red and brown upholstery and then in the late 70s and through the 80s, all brands had blue (light and dark), brown, tan, green, tartan, etcc… Separately, I am glad to hear that, for Europe market cars, the “Build Your Dreams” text on the back of the cars is going to be removed, so will only have the small BYD badge. I guess that they had to try it out, but we’re not into that level of expression over here !

Big difference with the Dolphin over the MG4 is the bigger battery is LFP, which means you can charge it all the time to 100%. The MG4 long range is recommended to 80%, so in the real world the result is a much longer range for the dolphin.

Don't mind the looks prefer it to the MG4 but then I drive a MG ZS. Recently had the MG4 as a courtesy car and found the Lane Kill Assist really annoying as it yanked the wheel constantly on country lanes and felt like the path other cars. Had to disable it every time I got in the car through a series of menus. Certainly as an older driver BYD is very much on my radar and looking forward to a review of the Seagull. A fair review but with one major issue and one or two minor quibbles. The Battery technology deserves much closer attention especially compared with its competition. The Blade configuration is more compact forming the cars basic structure, and the battery chemistry is significantly more durable than some of rivals. It also requires a significantly higher temperature for it to attain a runaway fire condition. In addition Tesla has started to purchase BYD's blade batteries which must be a vote of confidence. Tyres in OZ are Chinese and possibly contribute to the external noise (the Seal uses Continental tyres) The lane assist on the MG (I own one) is even more interventionist than that of the Dolphin. Price in Europe is high but unlikely to come down so long as, firstly, they can sell every car they make, and secondly, any reductions are very unlikely so long as the EU is investigating "subsidies." I think that your comments about older drivers are spot on. It's a sound buy as an urban runabout, commuter car, shopping trolley. BYD's capacity to reduce prices in future will terrify rivals.

Byd 's fires have been at least 99% in hybrids and were apparently started due to a software malfunction on the changeover from electric to ICE function. Looking forward to hearing what you think, I’ve got my test drive of one on Friday. PS. Now I’ve driven the car for about an hour and a half, these are my thoughts. Very comfortable and quiet, very good build quality and very well specified indeed for the price. It drives really well and is well suited to British B roads as well as motorways etc. a good handling comfort compromise. The niggles? Lane keep assist, needs some serious tweaking to be anywhere near as good as my eNiro on back roads and B roads. It’s fine on the motorway and dual carriageways, but is invasive on narrow roads. Get that sorted and it’ll be outstanding, especially for what you’ll pay. I loved the refreshingly designed interior as well, a really happy place to sit, with a much higher quality of finish than my eNiro 4+. A really solid 8 out of 10 for me. Now I’m going to wait for the active model to be released or possibly the Seagull. Don’t need a big vehicle anymore, the days when I needed to impress people didn’t even know are long past.

Just bought the the top spec model in Australia, great car for city driving and even some long distance trips. Some key comments that were missing in the review are below. 1) I am getting 420+ km range (14-14.4kw/100km) with city/highway driving. The latest Dolphin version can charge at Tesla V3 and V4 chargers that are now available for non Teslas in most locations. So removes range anxiety/concerns about broken non Tesla chargers. 2) Early 2024 software update improved ADAS warnings - less intrusive/don't go off every time you go over the speed limit by 1-2 km. ADAS functions are there so cars can rate 5-star safety and are based on European standards. They can be irritating and are present in most of the new ICE and/or EV models. On the Dolphin you can turn down the warnings, or simply turn off these functions. I definitely turn off lane keeping in the city + speed recognition. You can also set up short cuts on the screen as well adjust these via the steering wheel. 3) Overall, the software is good, but not up to Tesla standards. 4) Love the voice commands on adjusting the aircon, sun shade etc. Never use the screen anymore for these. 5) Apple Carplay currently only works with a cable, but a new update is being released to make this wireless.

The problem is that there will likely be someone in China that will flatly refuse to accept anyone wouldn't like to see that on the car, and would take offence at the mere suggestion - so I can't see it being possible to remove without a third-party hack, or a vinyl wrap as mentioned. The same has happened with Chinese smartphones, although over time they adapt to different markets - which BYD, MG and others are clearly going to do in the coming years.

EV designed tyres could help reduce at least some of the road noise and may get more range and efficiency. Not sure I'd say MG4 is the leader for competition as the BYD has more safety systems and has LFP battery across all batteries unlike MG which it only has on the entry level 51kWh. Planning on trading in my 2013 Mazda 2 for one of the following: BYD Dolphin, Hyundai Kona EV, or Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid. I wish the Yaris Cross came in full EV, then it would be a no-brainer. My GF liked her old Hyundai i30 and I know several ppl who've owned a Hyundai and had no real issues with them, but I don't know anyone who's owned a BYD and I'm hesitant to be the first. I'm not what anyone would call an "early adopter".

The BYD has become the biggest selling EV now in Australia for past two months now, knocking Tesla off top spot. And the largest demographic purchasing car is fifty plus with mature family , people with a few cars in the drive way, and BYD being used as the daily majority drive. To spend $6 on electricity to charge compared to $90 on gasoline. It’s a no brainer. And the look is conservative which Toyota proves sells in volume.

i bought a brand new ev in 2012 and it was £12k, and run it for 7 years and 60000 miles virtually zero maintenance and cost, 4 tyres and 1 wiper blade, no road tax, charge for free mainly from solar and free car chargers- they were fairly common place then

In my opinion, it is wrong to test the vehicle with the tires that come with it, instead of Ling Long tires that play ping pong with our safety, it is worth investing after the purchase about another 200/250 pounds in a quality tire (Michelin/Goodyear) and get security, comfort, stability and quiet driving Then the vehicle gets more credit points after upgrading the tires.

Wish reviewers would read the handbook first. You should know how, or if, you can switch off the Lane warning facility. I think the battery technology is supremely important. The increased safety and ability to charge from 5 to 100% safely is a major consideration. A bit of colour inside the car is a delightful change as well instead of the usual dark greys and blacks. Would prefer to buy British rather than export even more of our industry to China.

Add on $1K shipping and logistics, 10% import duty, 15% stealers profit, 20% VAT on top. Comes in just under $20K or £16K. Likely they will import the higher end trims so it may make it under £20K if you are lucky.

I'm test driving the AWD version on Friday and can't wait. Of course the skeptic in me is somewhat cautious about this "unknown" brand, but for me, simple things like retention of a physical turn signal, gear selector etc helps it stand out from Tesla. No technophobia here, but do I want to be scrolling through menus or swiping on a touchscreen to throw a car into quick reverse, it isn't for me. Plus this car actually has some styling to it. Can't take away from the success of the Tesla 3, but to me, it seems somewhat soulless. Anyway, I'll have a better real life opinion come this Friday

I like the look of it but surprised to see the top of the range has a manual boot opener. Don't like the scratchy plastics on the top of the range car either and what about a frunk ?. I really feel the price is just a bit too high for an unknown (in the UK) car manufacturer. Maybe start at £19,999 to £29,999 and it would be nearer the mark especially when you can see the price of these cars in China. I imagine it will soon be discounted rapidly to more realistic pricing or have selling incentives such as free charger, or miles or zero APR etc. to get it off the ground. Stopped once for fuel and a pee and once more for a pee. Food was premade and eaten enroute. When some people want to get going, they stop pissing about (apart from the pee stops). When not doing long trips I fuel the car once in 3 weeks. No need to plug in every night only to find the wife wants to go somewhere that evening. I just go and in the unlikely event that I need fuel it takes 5 mins to fill. Constantly managing fuel issues is not my idea of an advancement in motoring.
