BYD is actually a well-established brand in China, but Chinese car brands are something new to developed countries, so some people may think this brand is new to the automotive industry.
BYD never had an 'all electric policy' lol They made PHEVs for years and years in China but they never sold them here in Australia. This is just the first one imported here. Sometimes I think I could do a better job than auto journalists without any experience or training.
Have you just woken from a coma? Almost every single new hybrid car right now has no spare tyre, so I don't think that was a fair criticism. Sounds like you're nitpicking just for the sake of nitpicking.
I live in China and have had one of these cars for the past 4 months (BYD Song Plus). I have the single electric motor and 1.5L engine. It is plenty fast enough and VERY economical. I have the top spec model, very pleased with it.
If we talk about a 100 km journey, how many liters of gasoline does it consume after a fully charged battery is discharged? Assuming that you travel at an average speed of 100-110 km
@@borsavepiyasa2535 to be honest, I'm not entirely sure. I've never really calculated. Most of the time I use my car to commute to work and normally drive it in EV mode and charge it every three days. When I have driven further, I've not recorded it to make a calculation.
@@borsavepiyasa2535 also, you can't completely discharge the battery. Once it gets to it's lowest charge point, of 20%, it then switched to hybrid mode and charges the battery to maintain this level and uses battery when pulling away from standstill.
@@mattgage1021 Then can I ask like this? In real use, the vehicle moves at speeds of 100-110 km/h. If the battery is 100% charged and starts driving in electric mode, how many kilometers can the battery travel until it reaches 20% charge? Can it travel between 60 km and 70 km?
BYD are going to sell a heap of these. Everyone I know who has a BYD has been really happy with it. This will meet those people who want an EV, but are nervous about the charging networks and the convenience. and its not 65K like a lot of its Plug in hybrid rivals (Mitsubishi)
For us this car is perfect. Live in Sydney with family down the South Coast. Drive around the city on electric during the week. No range anxiety when we go down the South Coast. Charge overnight on standard AC power point. And a lot cheaper than the Mitsubishi. Also there are after market spare tyres for the atto 3 - I'd expect the same for the sealion.
This reviewer always seems like he’s making things up on the spot lol. Either a poor memory or does no research before doing a review. Makes Carsguide look quite untrustworthy.
Wish I could have bought this instead of the irritating CX-60 I currently own. Though very disappointing to see we didn't get the bigger battery they offer elsewhere!
@@thedualtransition6070 maybe you should google what car byd started with. I remember when I was young back in Beijing they had models copied from Toyota.
@@Tuzi523 Maybe you should take an english comprehension test. Of course I understand that BYD started with ICE cars, I am a bloody researcher in the area, and that does not change the fact that they went fully EV 2 years ago. Most Chinese manufacturers started off with joint ventures with foreign manufacturers, now they have outgrown those JVs.
You're driving the model with the grey/blue interior but we don't get a proper look at it! Plenty of shots of the black/brown but we only glimpse the grey blue from a still photo of the dashboard.
I once called uber and it was BYD sea-lion and I was like waow which car is this. I thought it must be those super expensive German car. The uber guy told me it’s BYD and that was first time I heard about it. I asked the price and I thought at that time, I would not spend that much money on a car which don’t have long term reputation. I was thinking of buying RAV4 or CX5 but now I am really incline to buy sealion 6 because it looks really good plus it’s electric.i have checked different reviews and they’re pretty good. I hope, I will make good decision by buying this car. It will be my first car
BYD has been around in Europe for ages but just started hitting the Australian market. I test drove the hybrid front wheel today and it was beautiful. I’m deciding between BYD and Tesla model Y🤔
Aside from Toyota being a established name, I don't think this RAV4 is playing in the same league in terms of technology, interior and other specs. It's even would be beyond what Luxus can offer in other areas such as battery and electronics.
It's surprising to see CarsGuide jumping on the bandwagon of labelling designs as unoriginal. It's an outdated critique, especially when numerous auto makers draw inspiration from a wide array of existing vehicle designs. BYD, in particular, has a rich history of innovation, having employed the renowned German car designer Wolfgang Egger, who has an impressive resume with several top brands. Additionally, it's important to correct a common misconception: BYD has never exclusively been an EV manufacturer. Though they've made a significant impact in the Australian market with their electric vehicles, they have long been involved in producing internal combustion engine (ICE) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs). It’s only in recent years that they've shifted focus to fully electric vehicles. I'm well-acquainted with these facts, having lived in China for an extended period and witnessed BYD's evolution first-hand.

I think it is good move because the electric range is enough for most daily drives and gives new EV users more security for long ranges.
So Byron THIS is how you look like 😂 - been following you over the decade and beyond reading your many excellent articles on GoAuto - excellent review, this! 👏
Should clarify that BYD makes ICE vehicles, not just EVs. If talking about just the Aussie market then it’s a correct statement, rather was. The Shark will be a DM-i as well, so a hybrid.
Almost all of hybrid and electric car has no spare tyre nowadays. Your reaction makes me fell i should research again. And i found that tesla never used spare tyre in their vehicles.
Nothing is said about real life range on the battery and what is fuel consumption when battery is depleted and how the hybrid system works in this case.
According to a Chinese reviewer who tried to deplete the battery (~18 kWh) and the fuel tank (~64 L), it's maximum range on highways (average speed ~100km/h) is over 1000km. According to some other reviews, pure battery range in cities (AC off) is around 110-120km (sometimes reaching 130km), much higher than the claimed WLTC range 100km.
I tested it today, and it’s amazing! I found it better than the new Camry and Model Y. It has plenty of space, is zippy yet comfortable, and for the price, it’s a no-brainer.
Geez mate, just a bit of research would help your credibility. Never had ICE? Abandon the no ICE policy? Who on earth has been selling more PHEV's .. BYD!
"Dinosaur fossil fuel technology!!!" Yeah when the charging infrastructure in the country is still in Dinosaur era, having a bit of "Dinosaur fossil fuel technology" makes sense.
Omg do these people do any research at all. Byd have built deisel and petrol vehicles since the 60s. They have been a major builder of plug in hybrids for years.
@@daweigo6851 Problem with German brands nowadays is they can no longer justify the outrageous premium price. Quality is mediocre and no tech differentiation. German ICE engines in 2024 aren't much better than those of 10 years ago.
Does this guy even realise the head of the BYD' s designer is Wolfgang Egger? He was the head designer for Alfa Romeo, Audi and Lamborghini, and currently as the head designer for BYD. Shem on this guy who has no clue what he is talking about.
Speaking about originailty, one US car analyst suggest to allow BYD to build factories in US so they can bluntly steal BYD's intellectual property 😂😂😂😂
I don't think BYD or China care as producing battery is not easy. Copying is no issue. US do have capabilities to do that, there's supply change to overcome for massive production numbers, these take time. Also China battery technology is out 2nd generation, there's definitely 3rd & higher generation in pipe work It is even better if US do allow BYD battery production in US, or partnership with BYD battery as US can learn take this quicker! Highly likely China BYD & other battery companies will be ok with that. US gain battery tech & manufacturing at one go! Although Not the newest generation of products & production But everything comes lighting quick if US have brain or allow that to happen
I haven't tried the Chery yet, but I tested both the RAV4 and the Sealion, and the Sealion definitely feels and drives much better. It offers more backseat space and superior technology. Plus, the RAV4's design feels boring.
Reviewer needs to do more research about cars or the brand of the cars. Probably avoid adding person opinion to things that are quite factual. Car guide is supposed to be expert in the field, not just on spot comments. I was surprised you don't even know as much as what i have researched myself about the car and BYD itself. By the way, I'm only an ordinary driver, user, has no ideas about cars. But i think i managed to get to know BYD and Sea lion 6 better than you. Please, seriously get to know a bit nore history of brand before commenting or the reputation of Car guide can be questionable.
