BYD Song L Driven - A Chinese Car That's Actually Fun To Drive

Chinese electric cars have proven their overall competence as products, but they're rarely much fun to drive. The BYD Song L is one such exception. Not only is it stunning to look at, it delivers on the thrills behind the wheel too, feeling far more connected to the driver than pretty much every other Chinese car out there. And no, we didn't think we'd be saying that for BYD either.
The Song L proves that BYD can now do affordable, fun, and sexy as well, and we're all for it, because the way to the hearts and minds of European consumers is through the wheel, not just through touchscreens and heated seats. If this one goes abroad, it should be a hit.

I am a fan of Zeeker and BYD(for its blade battery and DM-i technology). BYD’s DM-i technology is truly amazing, it makes Toyota’s hybrid be like a technolog from the Paleolithic Period. I guess that's why Toyota is gonna adapt BYD’s DM-i technology. Also like competition, that's why Tesla has dropped over $30k in last few years because of Chinese competition. A BYD Seal cost US$30 in Australia but it sells for US$52 in Europe, I think we are lucky in Australia. We can use the saved $22k to make holidays, buy groceries, pay bills, etc. Thanks for competition.

A Chinese car that's 'ACTUALLY' fun to drive? You make it sound like all Chinese cars are NOT fun to drive. I have driven a few Chinese cars recently. They were all fun and pleasurable experiences.
@InsideChinaAuto
@InsideChinaAuto Месяц назад
Haha, well you can see I've driven quite a lot of Chinese cars on this channel. Many are very competent, the SEA platform stuff especially, but most are fairly numb to drive, no real feeling, not much through the steering wheel, artificial feel or weight, but this doesn't rely on that, it feels instantly more tactile in your hands when you start moving, and I appreciate it for that. There are other good ones, but this one is better. I haven't driven the Seal yet but I heard that was very good to drive.

Hi Mark another great review hear you lucky man. Especially driving on them near empty roads where the hell are you it's fantastic. I'm quite taken back that you said it's one of the best cars to drive. I've driven the seal here in Australia and I thought it drove really well but not as sharp and dynamic as Tesla Y LR not as linear and Smooth in accelerating . Very good and they will get better. Buy idea bringing out the hybrid here in the sea lion I believe. I was hoping by d would only bring out electric stuff including the one you drove. What's the difference between the sea lion 07 electric there and the song L?. Also I wish they'd up their game on the charging speed. Did you enjoy your Zeekr tour with all the boys I saw you at the circuit in the background while Tom was driving. Which was cool.. I thought the 007 or 001 would have driven better. Or even my other favourite the Nio ET5 . Anyway keep them coming hopefully you'll drive the Xiaomi SU-7 next.. Regards John
@InsideChinaAuto
@InsideChinaAuto Месяц назад
Good to see you again John. I am indeed a lucky man, there's some incredible views here and lovely roads. Really not sure about the difference between this and the Sealion 07 EV. I've seen it advertised in the elevator at my compound and the overall shape is virtually identical but the Sealion looks a tiny bit cheaper. I'm going to have to check with BYD because they have so many models now it's getting confusing. The Zeekr cars drive great by the way, the best ride quality of all of them, but this has sharper steering and more feel. Instantly more engaging. Maybe Zeekr will get custom dynamics for foreign markets, at least I hope so. And yes, was good meeting Tom at the Zeekr event. We'll get a video of that out pretty soon I'd imagine. Xiaomi SU7 not far away now I hope too.

No need to adapt to me. XPengs drive very nicely, the P7 has really good balance in RWD form, but they're not as engaging as this, that's just a simple fact. Engaging isn't what everyone wants, many just want comfortable.

The words "fun to drive" are empty motoring journalist yap-crap. Most people never drive their cars anywhere stupidly thinking about whether the car itself is "fun" to drive! People want at best to be able to comfortably get to places that get them away from their over-familiar surroundings and 9-5 routines. And to enjoy themselves as much as possible with or without people whose company they genuinely enjoy. Intelligent adults don't necessarily need to have "fun" let alone have "fun" because their means of escape and transport is ostensibly "fun" to drive !! "Fun" is a childishly simple or silly word that motoring journalists and our media by definition robotically over-use and misuse. Paul G

Fun in this context means it's engaging and has some feel, which I personally, regardless of whether it can perform on corners, appreciate as it helps to feel connected to the car. I can equally enjoy the soft, soulless comfort of a Li Auto, but as somebody who enjoys driving I prefer this as it puts a smile on my face. If you'd got that far in the video, you'd see it explained more elaborately than in a limited character title.

They're certainly considered more mainstream, like a Ford or a Honda, because they came from a very bad place in terms of their quality and cars, but they're proving themselves to be a really good brand now, I would call them kind of mainstream luxury, like XPeng, so not quite full premium but very very nice.
