César Franck (1822-1890): Cantabile in H-Dur aus „Trois Pièces“, 1878
Franck gilt als einer der bedeutendsten französischen Komponisten, Lehrer und Organisten der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Nach der ersten musikalischen Erziehung in Belgien und ersten Auftritten als Pianist zog seine Familie nach Paris. Dort besuchte César Franck von 1837 bis 1842 das Conservatoire und wirkte ab 1846 als Organist an verschiedenen Pariser Kirchen. 1858 wurde er Titularorganist der Kirche Sainte-Clotilde in Paris, eine Position, die er bis zu seinem Tode innehatte. 1872 wurde er zum Professor für Orgel ans Pariser Conservatoire berufen.
Im Jahre 1878 wurde für die Pariser Weltausstellung der Palais du Trocadéro errichtet, in dessen Festsaal mit über 5.000 Sitzplätzen der Orgelbauer Aristide Cavaillé-Coll eine große Orgel mit 66 Registern erbaute. Es war die erste große Orgel in einer französischen Konzerthalle, für deren Einweihung eine Reihe von 15 Orgelkonzerten präsentiert wurde. Zwei Monate lang konnte man hier zweimal wöchentlich bekannte Organisten in einstündigen Konzerten hören. Franck spielte hier die Uraufführung seiner „Trois Pièces“ am 1. Oktober 1878.
Als einziges der großen Orgelwerke Francks basiert das am 17. September 1878 komponierte „Cantabile“ in H-Dur auf nur einem Thema, keine anderen Abschnitte kontrastieren mit seiner Durchführung. Vincent d'Indy charakterisiert das Thema als „anmutig und andächtig ... das Gebet eines Künstlers und aufrechten Christen. Zweimal erklingt dieses Gebet, und wir bewundern den großartigen Kanon, der leicht dahinschreitet und die Zierde der Melodie bildet ...“
Und Albert Mahaud, ein Schüler César Francks, schreibt: „Dieses Werk, das durch tiefe und eindringliche Emotionen gekennzeichnet ist, bedarf keiner Analyse. Es reicht aus, nur zuzuhören, um den Gesang der Seele des Meisters zu spüren.“

Franck is regarded as a highly important composer, teacher and organist in France in the second half of the 19th century. After his early music education in Belgium and first performances as a pianist, his family moved to Paris where he attended the Conservatoire from 1837 to 1842 and worked as an organist at various churches in Paris as from 1846. In 1858 he was appointed titular organist of the Basilica of Sainte-Clotilde, a position he held until his death. From 1872 he also taught as a professor of organ at the Paris Conservatoire. ln 1878 the Palais du Trocadéro was constructed for the Paris World Fair, including a banquet hall with more than 5,000 seats and an organ with 66 stops built by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll. This was the first great 32'-organ in a French concert hall which was inaugurated by a series of 15 organ concerts. For two months, well-known organists could be heard in one-hour concerts twice a week. César Franck premiered his “Trois Pièces“ here on October 1st, 1878.
His “Cantabile” in B-major, composed on September 17, 1878, is the only one of Franck's great organ works that is based on just one theme; no other sections contrast with its development. Vincent d'Indy characterizes the theme as “graceful and reverent... the prayer of an artist and upright Christian. This prayer is heard twice, and we admire the magnificent canon, which moves lightly along and forms the adornment of the melody...” And Albert Mahaud, a student of César Franck, writes: “This work, characterized by deep and penetrating emotions, requires no analysis. It is enough just to listen to feel the song of the master’s soul.”
