The notes of the C Major scale are: C D E F G A B
You'll know that you're playing in the key of C Major when these 7 notes are played in such a way that the C sounds more prominent than any of the other notes of the scale. The C note is the 'root note' of the C Major scale.
When we play these same notes but put the emphasis on the A note then we are in a different 'mode' of C Major. Some people would name it, 'A Aeolian' (the 6th mode of C Major) but this mode of the Major scale is so commonly used that it is considered to be a scale of its own; A Natural Minor.
The notes of A Natural minor are: A B C D E F G
The A note is the root note of A Natural Minor/A Aeolian.
A natural minor is said to be the 'relative minor' of C Major because these scales share the same 7 notes (they are 'related').
