Well spoken Tommy Howell you are a good man. I believe your intentions for the Soul Man movie were not out of malice but to draw awareness to the injustices plaguing African Americans at that time and now to this very day.
@@hotatpYeah when Mark is at the white girls house for dinner and her mother asked him that while the butler is serving desert. Right before we see her fantasy of him with the butter knife in his mouth and he's all sweaty with the jungle animal sounds and drums in the background. You mean to tell me you don't remember that scene? Next to the basketball game it's probably the funniest scene!
@@niradnagrom2356 right?🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣totally hilarious, that’s what I thought when you replied , that it was from that scene. That movie had no boundaries, his roommate was hilarious too “black? He never told me he was black, psh!”
C. Thomas Howell always comes off as a decent dude. He is in some of my fav 80's movies including Soul Man. I agree with what he says. I miss the 80's and will continue to watch the Outsiders, Soul Man, and the Hitcher.
Just letting you know that this is not tommy channel these are videos from Instagram or cameo we pay for. Enjoy them. However if you like to follow the real tommy hes on Instagram with the blue ✔
@@jcfc8197 False equivalence. The reason the Wayne's brothers need to apologize for White Chicks has nothing to do with "White Face". It was a horrible, unfunny movie. Stay gold Ponyboy. Stay gold.
Exactly my thoughts! 😂 And he also looks rough for 55 years of age. Kevin bacon is 64 and looks way younger than this guy. I guess it has to do with lifestyles.
@@kimber4t4 Thing is, he did another interview very close to around the same time he did this one and he has zero accent. Which tells me he turns it on and turns it off. I agree with pretty much everything he's saying here but yeah....the southern haggard accent is puzzling.
@@wendaltvedt4673 He was an actor, and they have a lot of trouble understanding how to be "real". That's why they choose that line of work and why they fall into line so easily.
The movie ends wirh his character Mark Watson punching out Ronald Reagan Jr of all people after he makes a racist walking.past Rae Dawn Chong's son! Their ain't nothing wrong with that movie, it's a classic and it had a point and not an offensive one! God Bless you C!!!
Soul Man has a good message if you've seen the movie. I think I saw it maybe 8 or so years ago. I probably didn't even focus on the racial aspects of the story. I was fixated upon the tuition price gouging that led the character to get incredibly desperate and creative to achieve his law school dream. That topic just seems to be completely ignored. So, that movie was in the 80's. Let's see, go look at the insanity of college tuition now. Sure, Harvard boasts generous scholarships, but they're NOT philanthropists. Harvard Law School is about $74,000 per year. Why??????? Please why???? This isn't medical or vet school. It's not as if law school requires a high tech lab, or supplies. It's a form of classism that is alive and well in these hypocrite institutions that parade social progress as their aim. How on earth is luxury tuition pricing actual progress? If anything, they're just continuing inequality as usual.
Very good. I loved Soul Man. And I don't subscribe to cancel culture much either, especially when it comes to racists. Sure, let them say what they feel they need to say because then we can educate them with the facts. It can be a teachable moment. I've debated with racists a lot. And nearly all of them have erroneous, patently absurd, and ridiculous ideas rooted in race pseudo-science and revisionist history which can and should be exposed and countered publicly. That, rather than canceling them, would nip a lot of their ridiculous narratives right in the bud.
Soul Man was a great show. Watched it when it came out when I was young and still crack up at it when I see it. It is as good as Chocolate Thunder. I am black, stop telling me what to be outraged about. Leave Howell and Robert Downing alone.
I Loved you in the outsiders! Soul man was a great movie too. Of course Spike Lee is upset. I thought it was great . Especially at the end. You married Chong’s Daughter? Cool! I think you could play any role great.why was soul mana bad movie. ?
Completely agree. I wasn’t particularly a fan of it just because I thought the premise was ridiculous (that anyone in the world would buy that blackface get up), but not in the way that the cancel culture freaks have a problem with it. I wasn’t offended at all, I just thought, “if anybody actually buys that this guy is black, they are the biggest idiot on the planet”. Tropic thunder makes no sense that people would get offended at it. It’s using blackface to make fun of…blackface, and Hollywood.. It’s what some refer to as “ demonstrating absurdity by being absurd”, which works in that movie because it’s a comedy.
3:25 Despite no longer married, him together with Rae Dawn Chong was a good learning experience for his side of the family. However, Christopher, are you able to squint to the features of an Asian unlike Emma Stone who didn't have or use prosthetics in Aloha? You took on this experiment to understand what is like to be black. Speaking of Rae, are you two still on speaking terms and if so, will ask her on how will you pass as an Asian? Thanks.
Ich kenne Thomas Howell nur aus The Hitcher.Oh ich habe mit ihm gelitten.Es war ein harter aber toller Film mit tollen Schauspielern.Rutger Hauer war sehr böse.❤❤❤
Wasn't sure whether to like or dislike your video as you had some valid points and points I disagree with. Cancel culture is banded about as a one size fits all label to silence any debate on difficult issues. Young people are angry because they see a lot of injustice and nothing is ever done about it. Truth is much of American and European wealth is built off the backs of Slavery and Empire. Conquering and subjecting people we regarded as lesser human beings to create wealth power and privilege. It is difficult to break down barriers and address racism when we have so many statues and monuments dedicated to people who built their wealth and power of the backs of slavery and injustice. This stuff is never addressed or taught in schools. I am British, and have many conflicting views on Churchill for example. He was a racist and imperialist, anti Irish, however if it wasn't for Churchill we would have lost the 2nd World War, and God knows what evil we would be living under now if Hitler wasn't stopped. All I am saying is we need to stop sweeping these issues under the carpet by labelling everything as cancel culture. Also it is not racist for a white person to play English, Scottish, Irish, American by changing their accent, but it is racist for a white person to play a black, Chinese, Indian person. Soul man I don't regard as racist because you were playing a white man pretending to be black to win a scholarship which quite rightly backfires. But this is different to blacking up to play an actual black person. However I know you are not racist.
Young people are tik tok virtual signalers who are creating racial problems that are not there. They don't care about facts and statistics it's all about being professional victims and virtual signaling. They are using racism as a weapon for their own authoritarian agenda.
@@wendaltvedt4673 by referring to young people as virtual signalures you are no better than the cancel culturists. Most young people ( and many of us oldies) just want basic fairness for everyone, but they have learned throughout history that not all people are created equal and to this day historic injustice prevails. We need to stop entrenching ourselves into our own beliefs and start conversations across all devides to address basic inequalities, otherwise we do start to head down the slippery slope towards populism and authoritarianism as we are seeing in Russia and Ukraine at the moment.
@@sljagger We are the least racist country on the planet. What the far left wants isn't equality in opportunity which is what we have today. They want equality in outcome and they openly discriminate against whites and even Asians to achieve this. They constantly demonize white people. They believe they can solve racism towards blacks by being openly racist towards whites and that's psychotic you don't solve racism by being racist. How many college professors have we all heard about in recent years that openly demonize white people, like trying to 'cure whiteness'? Talk about system racism.
@@wendaltvedt4673 you are deluding yourself if you seriously believe we are the least racist country. White people are not being gunned down indiscriminately by police officers. You have states introducing laws to disproportionately disenfranchise black, minorities and those who live in poverty from voting. Black people do not have the same life chances as white people and are far more likely to live in poverty, or end up in jail. America was built on the back of Slavery and many white people cannot accept children of slaves should now be considered there equals. It is the far right who is wanting to make America white again, not the other way round.
I just explained this to a co-worker. Most black people (can't speak for all) love the movie Soul Man. The black community has no problem w/laughing at ourselves. The movie definitely exposed a lot of backward thinking, not from black people but from other ethnic backgrounds. We're not overly sensitive about our race. If you're gonna attempt to tackle it, be correct, be funny, be true & leave the fake outrage at home.
Even if the intentions behind Soul Man were pure, I would still ask was it worth it? It completely derailed this guys career. He went from taking lead roles starring with the heavy hitters of the day like Patrick Swayze, Jamie Lee Curtis and Rutger Hauer, to becoming an obscure character actor in television and B-movies.
Ok Mr Howell but you and your family are still aware and old enough to see this was a terrible idea to take this movie .i would understand more if you just said I wanted the money and I got to work with Rae dong Chong . We all know that soul man was different because it made fun of stupid stuff that has cost black peope their lives and has stigmatized black people to this day . The black face to name 1 . Actors read scripts and you saw perfectly well that script was stereotypical and you taking that film has haunted you professionally to this day . To be honest I liked you as poney boy than you make the horrible soul man choice , but you have had to live with that for over 30 years not me .
