C4 Corvette: The RIGHT Way To Get In & Out!

There are SEVERAL ways to damage your Corvette C4, just from getting in and out.
Here's the EASY way to enter and exit without hurting the car, OR yourself!
TWO METHODS
Method 1 is quicker but you need to be agile and able-bodied to do it.
Method 2 is slower, but much easier if you have an injury, bad back, not much leg strength, old/elderly, etc.
I also show common problems that come about when people get in or out the WRONG way, such as a loose steering wheel/column, or a cracked targa top, and how to avoid these issues.

No matter what brand of car you purchase NEVER use the steering for leverage to get in or out if the car is equipped with a Tilt Wheel, you will eventually loosen it.

@@barrylerer2645 Great advice...This is a common issue with cars of this era (ESPECIALLY from GM it seems). I think the Vette just got it worse because it was "needed" to get in and out more than other cars.

@@RetroCarsForever Method 1 for enter or exiting a vehicle can dislocate a knee. If you ever do it, then getting back out of the vehicle will be very hard.

It's also worth noting, that in any scenario, I highly recommend helping your lady friend out of the passenger seat and not subjecting her to any of these methods. That is, of course, assuming you want her to ever ride in the car with you again 😉

FYI, the two different methods presented in this video are essentially the "extremes" based on personal agility. You might want to use some sort of "hybrid" between the two, or perhaps use the windshield frame as a brace (a much better place to put your weight than the top or the steering wheel). Try it out and see what works best for YOUR bodystyle!

I'd say the top is save to touch, as it has a steel frame. Just don't rip of the metal frame.

Youre right that the targa top's FRAME is strong (it is load bearing after all), but the COVERING (either light fiberglass or see-through acrylic) is fragile and very prone to cracking. About HALF of the C4's you come across have cracked tops, either from people using it to help them get out, OR from them not being careful when removing them.

@@RetroCarsForever Yes, mine cracked too, without reason. But I think, while going in and out, you will stay away from the fragile areas in the middle and just toucht the strong parts :D

20 Years ago getting in and out of my C4 was easy. Today I'm old and fat. I just bought a C4 ZR1 at Barrett-Jackson, that I'm driving home cross country. I'll probably watch this video like five times.

I'm a an Old School gear head. I just recently bought a 87 C4 with a 4 on the floor + 3. I did tons of research on technical, mechanical, maintenance, ect. Your video was the most important thing that I have ever learned about C4's, Thanks!

Your C4 looks mint..only thing I'd like is a black interior...I'm not a fan of grey or tan/beige interiors. Gorgeous car though...one day I'd like to own one, living in the UK, they are expensive to buy and maintain.

Thank you! I personally prefer the gray interior because it matches the exterior, as well as giving the tight confines a less claustrophobic feeling, but to each their own. I bet they're not cheap over there (especially feeding that V8 a steady diet of premium petrol!)

Great video! Thank you so much. I plan to own a C4 one day, but it's not going to be cheap (I'll have to import it to the Caribbean). So all these little tips about saving on wear and tear on the car is REALLY handy. Keep 'em coming! Beautiful, Beautiful ride by the way. One small request: if you have friends who have Corvette competitors from this era, I'd love to see a comparison (Porsce 944/968, RX7, 3000 GT, 300ZX). It's just a nostalgia thing, not really necessary. Keep up the great work!!!

Might have to wait until after the pandemic is over, but I think it would be amazing to gather all those cars and test them, back to back. Especially as their values are ALL over the map these days!

Thanks! Actually there wasn't any clear videos out there for ME, either....That's why I wanted to make this one! There was ONE that's out there for the C4, but I dont think it's well done...It's a yellow convertible with the top down and the windows down (makes it WAY easier), and he uses the steering wheel. So these two methods are ones I either figured out myself OR found from chatting with other owners!

I have a C4. I am short 5, 8" and over weight so yes it is a challenge to get in and out of. Your tips are a great reminder. Thsnks By the way I love my C4!!

I have 2000 Miata. I use a combination of methods 1 and 2 to get in and out. Left thigh and core definitely get a work out. I will say it's much easier with the top down and not having to duck my head to miss the roof. Appreciate the advice.

You got it! I had a 1999 Miata (one of my fave cars) and will say that even with the top up, it was still worlds easier to get in and out than the C4!

_Totally spot on about entry and exiting a fourth generation Corvette Brad. (Yup, I've hit my head on the widow just once, and only once on the convertible top roof pillar). Lessons learned. Plus, with the interior and dash being freshened in '94 a person is less apt to hit their shin on the bottom of the dash. (In my '91 because of quick entry, I have a few battle wounds courtesy of the dashboard. And I'm barely 5'10" and less than 155 lbs). And yes like 90% of the C4s still on the road today, the steering wheel will have that same damn issue(my pristine condition 1996 is no exception, even though it's minor)...thank you Chevrolet._

Dude Thank You so much! You have no idea how timely this tip is! I am picking up a (Cherry) Red 1984 Corvette on Saturday! Its got 18k miles on it and got it through just dumb luck*! I wasn't even looking for one, I was waiting for the owner of a V12 BNW 750IL to get the title of his car so I could buy it and saw a Vette up for auction with 12 minutes left to go and bid on it. I never expected to actually win the bidding (hence the "Dumb Luck") Its beautiful! There's nothing quite like driving a vette! But you already know that 🥳 Thanks for the tips on caring for America's one and only true American sports car! Oh it has 18k miles on it! 😁

Very well said, this applies to a lot of 2 door older cars. I just hate when passengers huff and puff getting upset coming in and out because they cannot be bothered not to grab sensitive parts of the car

@@RetroCarsForever All cars with tilt column have the same problem. All the parts in that column are shared with every vehicle by that manufacturer. Pickups are real bad about getting their columns damaged, taller vehicle being climbed up into.

I've always gotten in and out of my cars like that. Sadly no Vettes. I now have a Mercedes and I'm 71 and have no trouble with using my legs. But I'm fairly slender like you so still flexible. Maybe when I reach 100 I'll need assist bars like they use in bathrooms for really old people. Lol

I can relate to your advice...the average age of new Vette owners, is 67!....As a 74yo man. the ingress/egress issues that I face in many cars is a problem--but when I finally get my Vette,, I will follow your advice for sure!

Best of luck! And if ingress/egress is an issue, I'd recommend a Corvette that's made after the C4. The C5 and on ward made great strides in making it easier to get in and out of, the tall sill was eliminated.

We had a Z3 as well...It's not easy, but I'll tell ya what, it's a LOT easier than the Corvette! And the Z3's steering column is fixed, so at least you COULD use it as a bit of a brace to help you in or out.

I guess I'm somewhere between method 1 and 2. Basically take method 1, but instead of keeping both arms up, I put my left hand on the door sill. As you are lowering your butt in, you can use some upper body strength to guide yourself in gracefully. What I didn't really notice until this past weekend is that I've also been putting my elbow on the back part of the door frame as another point of contact while I get in. Getting out, I reverse it, except I put my right foot on the transmission tunnel and push off, rather than from flat on the floor. As you mention for method 2, I always put the steering wheel up into it's highest position when I'm getting out so I have as much room as possible and that way when I get back in next time, it is still in that position.

OK, the getting out tip I really need is when the car is parked on an incline -- even at maybe just 5 degrees or so, I think the difficulty goes up significantly. My workaround has been to just not park on inclines :)

OK, one more and that is it, I promise. When I got my 1993, the previous owner already bought sill covers; they are black plastic with Corvette written down them in white (in fact, perhaps the exact ones at 4:28 on the left). I have to say the chrome ones you have look pretty slick, so I think I might be in the market for an upgrade :)

I figured a lot of people use some sort of "Hybrid" between Method 1 and 2, sounds like you're one of them! I just wanted to illustrate what I see as the two extremes. And yes, inclines SUCK! Thankfully we dont have too many of them where I live. As for the door sills, luckily mine came already installed on my car. Previous owner had great taste, as I love how the chrome sills look. They're super sturdy too. Plus they have the Collector Edition logo!

I have been getting in and out of my C4 for a long time and have to say the sill is the key, at 60 years old I dont consider getting in and out much of a problem, unless you can not open the door wide or you are parked on a steep incline.

Agreed...No matter which method you use, a steep incline or a tight parking space makes it a MUCH harder challenge.

@@RetroCarsForever I believe there is a guy out there that make oversize pins for the steering column that you makes rebuilding the steering column cheaper., you just replace the pins.

Good job. The trick is to get in and out without ever rubbing the lower or upper side bolsters. My car is 34 years old and I still have no wear on the side bolsters of the seats.

@@RetroCarsForever It's very similar to the one Marty had in the film. The delorean doesn't have deep sills like the C4.. But, you also have to remember to duck down because of the gullwing door.

I'm 54, not as flexible as I was once, and have had my C4 on the road only a few days. I'm sorry, but this felt like a video explaining how to open doors, or walk upstairs. Getting in and out isn't as easy as most cars, but it's not hard either. And you don't need instructions - other than the bit about not putting your weight on the steering wheel getting in and out, which is good advice.

That steering wheel collapsing is a HUGE part of what makes getting in and out tricky, and why I made the video. I can’t tell ya how many C4s I’ve personally seen that had busted/loose steering columns, almost half of them have that issue because it’s so prevalent!

It might seem frivolous to describe how to get in and out of a C4 but what he does is the way to do it. The seating is so low in my '84 that it is a struggle to both get in and out. For this reason, plus a few others, I opted for a '98 C5. In the C5, you basically get in and out horizontally, not vertically. I still own and drive my C4 but as a backup to the C5.

I get it! I actually wish I would've added something about the C5/C6 being great alternatives if getting in/out of the C4 proves too much of a challenge/nuisance. C5 is the same basic Corvette flavor, but its a VAST improvement when it comes to getting in and out and interior space/comfort.

Leaving the roof stowed in back is the best method. No problem getting in or out. Have all the head room I need. I keep mine garaged and don't drive in rain. Windows always down too.

Def helps getting in and out to not have the top on, less ducking down that you have to do. Structual rigidity suffers noticeably, but I love driving with the top off.

I'm old and your video popped up. I set my bottom on the side rail. Then I swing my feet in. Then I scoot my bottom into the seat. About reverse getting out. I grab the frame for leverage. Tried sticking my foot in and doing it that way but my hips would hit the steering wheel so I stopped before i broke it. Stupid loud uncomfortable car that I'm never going to sell. I daily drive mine in the summer.

God yeah I had to put in the over-sized pin to fix mine. It was really bad before that. The pin was cheap and easy to fix. Funny, my method is somewhere between the two. Fall in and use one hand when pushing out, though that is due to the deep buckets I put in.

Thanks! I love Grand Sports too but didn't feel like paying the extra 10 grand or so for the fancy paint job and slightly wider rear wheels (the only differences between a Grand Sport and my car with the Z51 suspension). All CE's come with the sports seats, which have a unique dimpled pattern on the leather and badging.

Very nice, however I am 6’ 250 and the way I get in is by my left hand bracing the front windshield and slowly lowering myself down or up. Same way you do it though!

You can get in real quick - jump in and out even if old - it’s all in using your arm leveraging the “A” pillar. Grip both the pillar and windshield glass - it’s very easy

I'm not sure what Corvette you have, but my 94 ZR-1 has heavy doors. Maybe I got the lead brick option. These doors are not light by any stretch.

Strange, they should be light! I do know that the doors on the ZR1s ARE different than other C4s, but dont know why theyd be so much heavier, as they're still made of light fiberglass. Perhaps the door hinges could use a greasing?

The C4 is actually easier to get into than any vehicle I've had using Method 1. Faster than stepping up into my SUV, quicker and smoother than getting into my economy car. I mean you literally just drop into it. Getting out isn't as easy compared to the others tho, but still not bad. I'm 5'9, trim and agile tho... I can definitely see it being hard for a lot of people.

@Retro Cars Forever it actually is, little stuff like that matters. I read about how in Japanese nursing homes (where they sleep on the floor), they have fewer injuries and maintain better muscle tone simply because they have to get up and get down on the floor and couple times a day, whereas in the West we have more of that "I've fallen and I can't get up" issue like in those old commercials. So the way I see it, the more you drive a C4 the healthier you will be 🤣

There should be a method 3 for taller people (93 owner here). it is similar to Method (1), but you swing your knee under the steering wheel first before you sit down. Then when getting up, you push yourself out with your right foot while standing up.

Maybe I’ll just get a c4 for my daughter. At least having it parked in the d/w so I can stare at it. Love the c4 body. Wish the c4 loved my body.

The Pontiac Fiero has many of the same steering wheel damage issues also...PITA to fix it as well. ANY vehicle that has you grabbing the wheel for support is prone to damage....Do tell, on all these lifted 4X4 trucks, what's the first thing you're likely to grab when you're hoisting yourself up into the truck???....the steering wheel.

I do not even have to watch the complete video as this advice applies to all vehicles. Before I even got in the first time the dealer I purchased my 96 LT4 from showed me the proper way to get in and I told him that is easy as that is how I always enter my vehicles any how because putting the right leg in first method always causes butt wear on the edge of the driver seat and that is why in used cars you will typically find the edge of the seat worn. I learned the hard way not to use the steering wheel to get out of a vehicle and especially one with tilt steering. I had the steering wheel break while making a turn in my '88 firebird because of this reason. Of course it was loose giving me the warning sign but I let it go too long....lol. Never close the doors by pushing the window as over time that will damage the tracks causing the window to not move easily up and down. A lot of this is just common sense as you need to remember doing an action once may have no consequence but doing it a thousand times will definitely have some effect.

A quick observation here: The steering wheel is not as fragile as some claim. It can still be used as a 'point of reference' with the right hand when exiting. Just don't yank on it or use it with any appreciable force or weight.

Good point, but I think it's just too easy to add more weight than you realized over time, and I personally feel it's best to use something ELSE as a point of reference (like the A or B pillar) than the wheel as a force of habit.

I'd put my right leg in, support the rest of my weight with my right arm back against where the rear of the door closes against to then lower my left leg then the rest of my body in. No damage to the seat bolster as it's not even touched and better if you've got weaker legs and stronger arms.

I have a 93 in good shape and im curious if theres normally a little bit of up and down flex on the wheel. Like if you pulled down straight from the top center of the wheel, should it have a little flex or should it be 100% solid?

It’s hard to find any C4 that doesn’t flex at least a little. My wheels in great shape but I can get it to bend down a half inch or so. If it’s loose/rocking as you see in the examples in the video, that means something got seriously bent or broken.

I'm 6'3 270 on an off year and the C4 is tight all around. The C5 gives you all the extra inches a bigger man needs. Unless you are at the track and wearing a helmet. That makes for interesting posture.

Interesting as I am 6'6" 275 lbs and fit fine in my '87 C4 convertible. I did remove the sun visors, but that's the only thing to accommodate my height. No problems getting in and out either. I do have to wear minimalistic shoes though.

@@BrianCollierSr the C5 gives an extra inch+ on head room and shoulder room. An additional 5 inches in hip room over the C4. Leg room is about the same. The getting in and out part is easier the younger and more physically fit one is. I prefer getting in and out of coupes and verts with the top off/ down, but it’s not difficult when the lids are on. Agree on the shoes. A pair of VANS work real well. Forget about wearing your Redwings .

Any idea if this was a problem for the 80's C4's? Whenever I see/hear about someone mention the structural weak point of the steering wheel, they are almost always showing off the 90's C4. Also, if the steering column is a weak point in the C4s, then I'm willing to bet that it's also a weak point for 4th gen Camaros and Firebirds.

This is indeed a problem for ALL C4s. I've seen plenty of early ones with the same floppy steering column. And you are correct, this is ALSO an issue with the 4th gen Camaros/Firebirds, just not as bad, as they arent nearly as difficult to get in and out of.
