Full Throttle Fall Fest(Track Club USA & SCMC) at VIR November 13th, 2022.
Red run group. Third session on Sunday.
Car is a 2004 Corvette Z06.
Engine: Lots of reliability mods. No power mods.
Suspension: Stock leaf springs, T1 sway bars, Bilstein B8 shocks, delrin control arm bushings, poly shock mounts, SKF Race hubs. -2.6/-1.5 camber
Brakes: AP Racing CP8350, 325mm rotors front and rear. Ferodo DS1.11 pads.
Wheels/Tires: CCW C14 18x10, Pirelli P-Zero DH Slicks(scrubs) 285/645/18 front, 305/660/18 rear.

Glad you had track insurance and the frame is okay it looks like you are staying positive and bringing the car to the next level. This looks like the chaotic catalyst you’ll look back on a few year later and be glad it happened both for the car and your wisdom. It should help to know by putting this out there more people will be able to learn from it myself including. Liked commented and subscribed 💪

When I've been to VIR to watch races it's turn 4 that bites most of the cars. glad to see you were not hurt and the car can be fixed to run again.

I was at VIR in November and 3 cars spun in the EXACT fashion you did. Two instructors and a red run group car were totaled going into that same straight off the lower S's

Dang man I’m sorry to hear that. Glad you’re all good and the car is in good enough shape to get it back out on the track eventually. I’ve been wanting to do a track day in my c5 but my wife isn’t huge on it. Did charity laps on Saturday and was worried about getting into the curbs there for that exact reason. Hate to see that it can snap around that quickly. Looking forward to see what you do with the car.

If you had fun at charity laps and want to get on track, I'd encourage you to go for it. When the weather warms up find a group that does instructed novice sessions. If you're concerned about risk to your property out there, consider getting track insurance. The snap you see in the video is a result of the temps and the tire compound. Under typical spring/summer/fall track day conditions your C5 would be fine out there.

Man I was up there this year on Pirelli slicks when it was 30 degrees and was like driving on ice. Totally feel your pain, its a tough thing. Hope you are back out there!

Yeah, they are sketchy for sure at those temps. They were awesome in the warmer months but I think I'll avoid them in anything approaching cool temps.

Yeah man this really sucks however it IS an opportunity now to do whatever you want with the car. You were already veering off into non-street legal track-rat territory with it anyway and now you have the golden opportunity to go full race-car. Excited to see how your build progresses! Thanks, I appreciate the comment Charles. Before this happen I was torn... hoping to get into wheel to wheel eventually I need a car with a cage. Wasn't sure if I'd sell the C5 and pickup something already caged. Well, this happening made it possible to keep the C5 and get a cage!!

I crashed my 350z in that exact same spot about 8 years ago in the rain. Almost identical car reaction and impact. No drive train or suspension damage....but a lot of ruined body work.

There are a lot of tire marks in that spot heading off in the same direction. Catches a lot of folks out. Hopefully you got your Z back up and out there.

@@hnel_on_track Mine had similar damage. Maybe a few more bent panels because it snapped around and hit the tires again on the driver side. I was able to drive it back to the pits. I had some professional bodywork done on rear and front quarter panels. Replaced a door , bumpers and hatch myself. Put a roll bar and race seats in it and it is still my track car. Hope you are still tracking yours as well.

Sad to see that happen to your C5 man. Man that sucks. If you don’t mind me mentioning, as stated in the video - I’d like to see you go in depth on the Track Insurance. I track at my local racetrack Hallett, and I do track days quite often and I’m very interested into doing the insurance as a incident like this, it really helped out big time for your car.

I can see animals ran over, people fighting over the silliest things, or tornados ripping buildings apart, but seeing a Vette wreck makes me cringe. Glad you didn't get damaged yourself!

Thanks! Wheels are CCW C14 in 18x10, seller listed the offset as 50.8mm and I never bothered to measure. I seem to remember 21ish pounds. There are definitely lighter wheels out there but these were a good deal given that they're forged.

Hate to see the crash, glad your rebuilding. I watched your track build log video and from the looks of one of your still shots your are running the stock leafs and didn't go coil overs? Well your quite a good driver and maybe people jump to that mod too soon? 2023 is my first year to track, been planning for 2yrs. thanks for your info.

Hey Mark, glad to hear you're getting out on track in '23! I stuck with the leaf springs for two reasons: cost and simplicity Penske based coilovers are the gold standard. Whether the Spec Corvette ones or GSpeed developed units, they are expensive. I put the money elsewhere. Other part of it was to minimize the variables at play while I gained experience on track. I'm giving up some performance by having non-adjustable parts but it lets me focus on my driving. So far I have not felt limited by the leaf spring setup. In fact I just had some used T1 springs(stiffer leaf developed by GM for use in SCCA T1 racing) delivered and will put them on the car before next season. That was an inexpensive way to get some higher spring rates without going to coilovers. Down the road I may go all in with coilovers/drop spindles/full aero but that is a long ways off.

Thanks for you're response, I do have T-1 suspension in my notes as a option other than coil overs but watching you drive I don't believe I'll worry about that for awhile lol. Sway bars and shocks will do. I'll be subbed for you 2023 season!

I have a ZL1 1LE that I dropped a valve in and it took out a piston so I have been out of commision now over 6 months, Still making payments on it but I took the time to do a good rebuild on it even though it only had 45K miles on it I am uping the HP to the next level, It gives us something to tinker with so think of it as a time to upgrade and make it what you want it to be. Sounds like thats what you are doing. Good luck with it. Be Careful

Thought has cross my mind to be honest but not necessarily for looks. Taking the roof off the FRC/Z06 platform was a huge pain. Fixing this kind of damage on a coupe would have been easier. Probably going to do a bolt on roof once I get the cage in so I don't have to deal with the epoxy bonding again.

VIR has to be one of the worst tracks in the US for damaging cars. Grass makes for bucolic parks, but it makes zero sense stopping off track cars in the shortest distance possible.

I did not think I'd see "bucolic" used in the comments for one of my videos, well played! Agree with you on the grass. To make matters worse there had been a lot of rain in the days leading up to this event so the ground was pretty saturated too. There was a significant amount of mud on the underside of the car. I'm not blaming the conditions. My inputs caused the car to spin but the factors mentioned above come into play when looking at the end result.

@@hnel_on_track sorry that happened to you. I had Pirelli Diablos on my Ducati 916. I never fully trusted them even when warm. Michelins made it handle markedly better. Safe is always good.

Exhaust is stock from heads to tail pipes. Microphone placement is a big part of why it sounds so good :) I've got it attached to the inside of the bumper just above the muffler tips.

My inputs exceeded the grip available in these conditions and on this part of the track. That started the slide. The tire construction and compound in these temps played a big part of why the snap was so hard. The Pirellis on the car are full on race slicks. They need to build up heat to get sticky. For those temps, I should have run a tire that reached optimal temps fast. Live and learn.
