Governor Gavin Newsom signed the Right to Repair Act on Tuesday, which will soon make it easier for California residents to repair cell phones and other electronic devices. Californians will be able to access information, manuals and parts that they couldn't get their hands on before.
Electronic repair workers are happy about the change.

Next Mercedes Benz. They don’t allow people access to parts.

I wonder what this will do to console repairs.

Nothing. I believe consoles were excluded from this bill iirc. It's really difficult to get console r2r passed due to such strong lobbying from the opposition.

Apple will not be affected. They will just FORCE you to update your phone by making the new IOS incompatible with older app versions.

Point of order on the headline: the governor doesn't 'pass' legislation, the legislature does. the governor signs legislation. A small point but people seem to not know how the government is supposed to work and such mis-written headlines help to perpetuate this ignorance which is why people think the president can just make things happen without Congress.

This could drive Apple to make Iphones a subscription only model. In other words, you wouldnt own it. You'd be long term renting it.

As soon as they stop supporting the iOS on the devices as they become older they will be be obsolete. They already do this on older iPhones and iPads Mac books etc. Some you cant use apps because of the iso version being too old and can no longer be updated. SMH.

I’ve seen that on all phone operating systems. You are probably only familiar with iOS.

@@Bigpopp1 nah I had a $50 android that I had for years everytime my new phone would mess up I would go back to it at the end I just ended up using it as my main phone had it for a few more years till it finally broke & I could always download the same apps

You'll generally get about five to six years worth of iOS updates before your phone no longer is compatible with the newer aps. But honestly only a very small percentage of people actually retain their phones for that long; I generally keep my phones for about 4ish years and have the battery replaced at least once. While phones do have issues most people are careless with their devices and never have a screen protector or phone case and act surprised when they drop it and have to spend hundreds to fix it.

@@BartBasquiato ive had the same iphone x for years. it still works, can download apps, gets security updates. apple typically supports devices for much longer than anyone who puts out devices running android. its one of the few things they tend to do better

This is not how our country is suppose to work... we have a free country for a reason.. when you have governments forcing companies for to this it takes away from a free market... if you do not like how a particular companies in license's its products' and service's or going about business then vote with your dollars.... Most young people do not have any idea until they get a bit old and start to understand how a free country is suppose to work.. and then its pretty hard to reverse the Big Government standard they set..
@DKonigsbach

You are confusing "free market" with "unregulated market". They are not the same. An unregulated market virtually never results in what Smith means by the term "free market".

@@DKonigsbachhe is absolutely correct, all those stupid act feels like a communist party, that's why there are licensing and patents, if you don't like it don't use it , it's that simple

@deejones6047 9 месяцев назад
@@DKonigsbach Yes that’s what a free market is. If a company wants to not provide parts to their products they shouldn’t have to. To Force them is NOT a free market. Regulations are for fair practice. I think you’re confused on the definition. Our country did not become economic power it is by over regulating business functions. We because a power and grew only when regulation were at a minimum and business can flourish. I am speaking as a business owner myself. California is over regulated and look at the state of Business here. In your opinion is this a state you want to grow a business in ?

@@louiec9534 It sure dose feel like a communist creep happing in California. He dose not understand business. Corporations will leave as they have done. It’s the reason why we are #1 in job loss, and corporations leaving the state. Also, #1 in high income earners leaving … 25% of the tax base has left the state.
