I use a spray bottle to avoid cross contamination of grits when using the micromesh. I also stopped using accelerator after my neighbor showed me a walnut pen with a CA finish that developed a cloudy bloom after 2 months. I only use EM02, the thin Starbond, as it is less likely to build up ridges during application...and 8-10 coats applied wiping in only one direction (once per application) seems to produce a great depth of finish.

Doug Robins Hi Doug, thanks for the tips. The spray bottle is a good tip, I’ve see people use ketchup bottles too. Lol I have herd about accelerator clouding, but I have never had an issue. The most common causes for ghosting or clouding I found over the years is paper towel fibers; if turning too slow the towel fibers can get embedded into the finish causing a cloudy look. The other cause is moisture from the wood and at times can even separate the 1st coat of CA finish from the wood. Oil finishes under the CA can also cause issues if not totally cured. It’s a good idea to wipe the wood with rubbing alcohol before applying a finish to avoid oil issues, depending on the species of wood. Starbond accelerator is formulated to be a little bit slower to avoid whitening for drying too fast. I can attest to it being slower. Maybe less acetone in it, not sure. I’ve also used only thin before, but prefer to use medium viscosity mostly because I really like depth of finish. The wood to me, has a really thick glass-like-covering. The extra sanding for the ripples is quick, and doesn’t bother me. Hey, there’s always more than one way. I will say, all glue brands are not the same and methods should differ depending on which glues are used. Well, thanks for commenting I appreciate it. Have a happy new year and take care my friend. -Speros

Hi Speros - very nice video. I like your slow and clear method of speaking. Is that a Jet 1640EVS lathe you are using? I'm thinking about getting that model and want to know what you think of it. Thanks in advance.
@spwoodart
@spwoodart 4 года назад
Michael Driver Hi Michael, I am using a Jet 1640EVS lathe with bed extension, making it 16.5x60. I have owned it for a few months now and so far It has taken everything I’ve done with no problems. I also own a Jet dust collector, no issues. I did have an issue with the paint scratching, but it was my fault. I called customer service which was great and they sent me a spray can of Jet paint no questions asked. Lol I have a video you should take a look at on my Jet. I recommend this lathe for that price range. It’s a solid machine and I love the spindle lock and tail stock. Alot of this Jet lathe is almost identical to the powermatic lathes. Hope that helps. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mUGYeXseovU.html

Thanks for the great video. I use wet & drive sandpaper for acrylic blanks. I’ve used CA glue a few times when turning wooden pen blanks with hit and miss results. When sanding the CA, what grit of wet & dry sand paper would you recommend that I start with. What grid of sanding disc do you use when sanding the ends? Thanks, Peter
@spwoodart
@spwoodart 4 года назад
Petrus Scott Hi Petrus, thank you so much. Good questions. The sanding part is always the problem area, it’s kind-of-an Art. Lol When I start sanding with either 400 or 600 git of Abrenet. If I was using dry sanding I would start with 400 as well, but it’s harder to feel the groves disappear. I always use wet sanding on CA or acrylic blanks. Hybrid blanks are different and varies. Great question on the pen ends. When I’m using the disk sander I use a 320 with a light touch. Course grit will chip out the end corners. When I used to sand on a table or flat surface I would use 600 wet, then 800 wet sanding. It takes awhile this way but works with out chip-out. Again light touch. Hope that helps, thanks again Peter. Take care -Speros

One more question. I have a 8” porter-cable disc sander. I think it is the same model as the one in your video. The finest grit that I can find is 240. Where do you buy your 8” 320 grit ? Thanks, Peter
@spwoodart
@spwoodart 4 года назад
Petrus Scott I usually get them on Amazon, but I’ve not had to buy them in awhile. Any higher grit should work well, 220 and above. Petrus Scott sounds good, sorry I did t realize where you where. I believe any grit 220 and above would be fine for the ends if you don’t want to shop there. Thanks again. Take care.

Speros. Can I use this finish on a French rolling pin?
@spwoodart
@spwoodart 4 года назад
Roger Dale Scott Hi Roger, That’s a good question and I’ve herd many debates on the subject. I personally checked the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for Starbond (on their site) and it does say if ingested May cause adverse effects. I’m not sure if that goes for cured. I would say no, it’s not food safe. I’ve used it on bowls, etc. but they are display pieces. I believe CA was never intended for what we use it for these days and started out medicinal and house hold use. I don’t see CA glues are FDA approved. I always lean to the side of caution if unsure. Hope that helps. Here’s a link to the SDD for EM-150 (medium glue). www.starbond.com/product_pdf/Starbond%20EM-150%20SDS.pdf
