I'm embarrassed by this interviewer, asking him about boy George and all kinds of crap that has nothing to do with him this man was the coolest cat I ever saw! one of the all time greatest singer/ bandleader/ entertainers in the business, and he was gracious, and polite even through this awful interview.
Same. Rather than asking anything engaging during the interview. It was as though the interviewer was fishing for some fashion type drama, drama that simply didn't exist . "What's your opinion on Little Richard?" "What's your opinion about how Cher and her clothing choices?" ".....Prince?" "...Bowie?" "... boy George? FfS the man was a entertainer. CAB WAS SO MICH MORE THAN A ZOOT SUIT, good grief.
Cab knew this interview was a train wreck. The interviewer made it all about her: asking Cab to react to her personal taste. All those questions about contemporary rock stars he didn't know were a waste. At the end when she wraps it up and says the interview brought out a lot of good stuff, Cab smirks and says, "You think so?"
I've never seen an interview with Cab and he carries himself quite well. Perhaps there's more interviews, but seems weird to talk to an absolute musical legend and spend the whole time talking about what he wore. Dude led some incredible musicians and ruled the stage for many years. His musical influence affected musicians for decades.
I have admired Cab since my late father introduced me to his music in the 60s - my father was a semi-pro clarinet / sax player from the 1930s, I loved Cab's flamboyance and life as an entertainer. Black American musicians were and still are so cool. Initially, I nearly ended watching this, because I felt the interviewer was almost putting words into Cab's mind and mouth, without letting him roll.....if you guys know what I mean.
Just here for the comments. I paused the vid at about 20 seconds. Mr. Calloway and his family did a great interview with Edward R. Murrow. It’s on RU-vid. This was such a wasted opportunity and a LOUSY interviewer.
@@geerowr.6666 You have to be kidding! That Murrow interview was so scripted it would be offensive if it weren't just the state of things at the time. There is zero spontaneity and they may as well all be on stage performing roles. This footage may not be pretty, but it's the real deal. The better interview is the "Day at Night" one with James Day.
@@awo1fman You must be related to this horror of a hack interviewer. Murrow's piece was what his network told him to do. At least he knew how to listen after he asked a question. Murrow did several interviews with other celebrities. He hated doing them all, because he was a serious newsman who had covered WWII. YOU on the other hand are delusional.
@@geerowr.6666 LOL you're an idiot. This was test footage, not the real interview. That's why the interviewer wasn't miked up and why they did the extreme close-up to focus the lens. They did them individually and this was just Calloway's part. Somebody ran across the footage in archives and decided it was worth releasing because it shows him unguarded and unscripted, unlike anything else you're likely to see. The Murrow interview was terrible, regardless of what you think about either man. It's flat and weird and there's no humanity. Like I said, if you want to see a good interview of Calloway then watch the Day at Night one.
The interviewer was absolutely disrespectful. Cab is still the coolest cat ever. If it wasn't for Cab Calloway, there would be no need to dance. RIP Mr Cab Calloway......classy dude all the way ❤❤❤
The Great Cabell Calloway has shown us that the color of your skin doesnt stop you from greatness. Its your attitude and talent that goes along way. Ty Mr. Calloway for leading the way for many talented entertainers. You will never be forgotten⚘🎶🎙🎺🎸🎹
bad interview, nothing but clothes which is not the most important thing for a performer, made him feel unconformable, cold, and i dont think she really knows who he is, hes not a THEATER ACTOR!
I don't like this interviewer at all. She's just asking questions and is not in jibe with Cab at all! He starts to warm up and mentions he had a number of Zoot Suits and one of them was even green, which would have been really out there, and he laughs a little knowing how ridiculous a green zoot would be and she doesn't reciprocate with him at all about that detail and goes right into the next question. You can hear in her voice that she's got no connection with him or what he's saying. She's just there to fire questions at him. I agree with some one else, she probably didn't even know who he was. Probably just watched a few clips on RU-vid or read a few articles of Google at best. She doesn't seem to be excited or eager to meet him and digs his music. What a shame. Man, what a wasted interview. I had a hard time sticking with it, it was painful to watch. I only did it because I wanted to hear Cab's voice talk and he was dressed pretty snazzy, as always.
You tube wasnt invented back then, he passed in 94' she didn't have idea about his history, thats a fact, she did her homework on him in one day apparently, she was into jazz, but not a Callaway fan
I'm a good friend of his grandson's and I recently spoke to Cab Calloway's daughter and she invited me to her home then the coronovirus hit....she was amazing entertaining and very knowledgeable. She's 93 years old and sharp as a tack. Blessings to the family.
the interviewer was terrible but you could see that this is a classy old school black man the type that were so common in my father and grandfather's day
Interviewer keeps cutting him off plus she's asking him loaded and presumptuous questions. Plus she keeps asking about his clothes??!! THIS MAN IS A LEGEND. The interviewer She's kinda cold, ignorant, and DEFINITELY NOT QUALIFIED to be interviewing this man!!
I get the impressive Mr. Calloway is thinking... 'What the **** is she on about?' What a fascinating and amazing performer - and what did this interview allow him to say about himself? He got his coat from England... This must have been an interview for a fashion magazine or something?
It’s funny how interviewers do the same to women all the time yet everyone is mad when they do it to a man. Whether or their career level or not people should be able to ask about clothing since it’s important when you’re an influencer or celebrity.
Wish those days could come back , all tho I was not born yet during that time,I feel I missed out on that aria.... I love the way the dress in those days.the music, the lyric.... Love that time!!!!!!
What a cool cat, never ceases to amaze me on the similarities between all creative artist. The "I'm doing me, fuck what every one else is doing" mentality. Good shit, good shit. It's to learn from, install and apply to your own brain network.
I loved this man!. Every time I watched The Mask with J Carrey in that yellow suit and Janet Jackson It's Alright video, there's no one else I thought of other than Cab Calloway and he was in that video. He was one of my favorite performers.
where are the questions about his music, his songs, his stage clothing style, his technics in dance is 2/3rds of his talent, his songs and arrangements as a singer and band leader is another 1/3, and to me the one that shows his real talents.
This was a rehearsal interview the zoom to the face was to set the focus for the camera. Many entertainment interviews go through this type of routine to see what works.
Man had Classic, High Spirits ....... during a time in America when bring black was a crime. They pro formed from the heart, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Joe Turner. Jazz Benny Goodman, Fletcher Henderson & John Hammond jazz impacted American culture. Race didn't mean a thing when it came to Jazz!
It's pretty frustrating that everytime he starts to push the conversation towards music, she goes right back to asking about fashion. Cab Calloway was the man! As lame as this interview can be at times, it's still actually pretty informative at others. I Love the part where he starts to lay a little vintage jive on 'em: "Man look at that cat! He is really comin' on! He is togged out from his conk to his stomps! Got on a thread there that will gas ya!"
Horrible, horrible interview, as if Cab's singular accomplishment was wearing a zoot suit. In actuality, Calloway appeared much more often in tie and tails.
What a silly interviewer..She's fortunate enough to be in the presence of Musical Greatness!, and then ask silly'ass questions about someone else's clothes...unbelievable! Mr. Calloway handled this ridiculous interview like the true gentleman he is...I wish i could've experienced your shows. RIP🙏⚘️ Thank you RU-vid...We can now watch Mr. Cab Calloway anytime!:)
This was a sad interview, his grace is evident but asking all about his style and not letting him expand on his answers. Like the dances….he could have told so much more.
She didn’t know the right stuff to ask. She keep talking about clothes, Cab was more then clothes, he was a great entertainer and a early pioneer of Rock N Roll. She should’ve asked Cab about James Brown, Michael Jackson, who was as great as Cab. I think James was influenced by Cab. Induct Cab into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.
This is obviously an interview for a fashion magazine. Still fascinating. Anybody know what he's talking about @1:57 ? I can't find anything about "Buddy Boys in England"
I say he influenced Salsa music more then anything else. Salsa is a mixture of Americans Jazz and west African rhythms. Early Salsa artist took ideas from American Jazz performers from the 1930's Like Can Callaway. Cab Callaway would yell out something and then his band would yell out a verse behind him. Salsa bands to this day still to that. Cab Callaway was doing that in the before Salsa music was invnted.
The man did much much more than only fashion! These questions are not creative at all. You can feel from his short answers that he's bored and rightfully so.
Perfect example, of why you never let a woman conduct an interview. Ridiculous! Looking for him to make comments on what other entertainers, shows, did, do..Instead of asking him about himself, his showx, & people he knew. It’s like she’s just trying to create friction..
I enjoyed hearing his view on other people especially since he’s been around so long and so has drag in all the things we think are something new. I don’t think people realize this is a practice interview I don’t know what happened to the original interview or where it went but I think it’s really interesting to hear his view, his knowledge on history fashion music, etc. I’d like to see you and interview and what she talks about there.
