Cabell Caloway III, known professionally as Cab Calloway, was an American jazz singer and bandleader. He was a regular performer at the Cotton Club in Harlem, where he became a popular vocalist of the swing era. Fayard Antonio Nicholas was born October 20, 1914, in Mobile, Alabama, and Harold Lloyd Nicholas was born March 17, 1921, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Harold Nicholas played the role of Ernest "Sarge" Johnson in the movie the Five Heartbeats. Harold was also the first husband of the actress Dorothy Dandridge. This is a form of Jazz called "Swing". The people in the video are members of The Silent Generation, those born 1928-1945 with the end of WW II. The women are not "Flappers", that was during the Roaring 20s. This movie was during the "Jazz Age", the in-crowd were called "Hep cats" for the men and "Kittens" for the women. In 1939, the jazz singer Cab Calloway published Cab Calloway's Hepster's Dictionary: Language of Jive. A hep cat was "a guy who knows all the answers, understands jive." The hep cats and hepsters Calloway described would in the following years become known as hipsters. Those who were hip eventually became Hippies by the mid 1960s.

I had dinner with Cab Callaway. My Dad was friends with Clayton "Peg Leg" Bates, (a famous Black Dancer). Mr. Bates built a Resort in the Catskills (Upstate NY) that welcomed all races but catered to a mainly Black Clientel as this was the only resort that welcomed Black people at the time. Most of the resorts in the Catskill catered to an all Jewish Clientel. Mr. Bates frequently invited our Family to come up to see the shows at his resort. Sometimes we were the only White people in the nightclub but we always felt welcome . After Cab Calaway performed he came over to eat dinner at the table with Mr, Bates. What a nice man and a great Entertainer, This has to be an old video as Cab was much older when I met him. Watch his "Minnie the Moocher" video. Cab was a big part of the "Blues Brothers" movie starring Dan Ackroyed and John Belushi.

My favorite version of 'Minnie da Moocher" is the Betty Boop Cartoon! It seemed that he, Mr. Callaway had a good sense of humor.

This is even more impressive when you realize this was done in one take, no rehearsals.

Even more impressive, both brothers were in wheelchairs from polio at the time.

Then again, if you actually research this, you find that there was a lot of rehearsing and that while the stair part was filmed in one take the rest was not.

This is from the 1943 film entitled "Stormy Weather." It may have been enhanced somewhat for purposes of the video -- but know that b&w films years ago were of good visual quality as were the excellent quality of the 1950's MGM musical films. At any rate, that's where this particular scene originates from.

It's from the movie Stormy Weather, made in the 1940s. The Nicholas Brothers have been dancing since the 1930s.

I've watched this countless times. Watch Down Argentine Way, Gal from Kalamazoo and Lucky Number(when they were young). Just fabulous talent. They added gymnastics moves to their routines.

Cab was a master of the Jazz form called Scat. One take. The Nicholas Brothers were contemporaries of Fred Astaire, Buddy Ebson and Bojangles Robinson. The up and coming kid of the day was Sammy Davis Jr. 1943 movie, no errors.

Cab is a whole other level of entertainment. ❤ I love him. They even used him in cartoons by tracing his dance moves frame by frame.

It's from the movie "Stormy Weather", in 1940. You'd be surprised what people have been capable of in movies since even the early 1900s.

When you talked about Tom Jerry “ Is you is or is you ain’t my Baby..” Tom & Jerry got that from Louis Jordan hit record a few years before. You are watching history that hasn’t been duplicated 81 years later. The dance routine was from the movie “ Stormy Weather “ 1943.

That's when music was MUSIC! It had meaning, it was fun & oh all those instruments that aren't even used anymore -- damn shame. Singers & dancers HAD to have natural talent -- no auto-tune, no faking the dancing -- it was all live w-just a couple of re-dos to get it perfect.
