1943 from the film Stormy Wheather. The '40's (& some late '30's) were known as "the big band era" -- Benny Goodman, Glen Miller & the great Lionel Hampton on the xylophone.

These brothers did this in one take, the dance.

The emcee/singer was Cab Calloway , who led the big band playing in this clip....50 years later , he was featured in "The Blues Brothers"!!!!

What you're watching here is the final scene in the landmark 1943 motion picture, "Stormy Weather." It was the first big budget movie from a major motion picture studio with an all-black cast. Cab Callaway was one of the top "Big Band" bandleaders (and in Cab's case, a singer, too) coming out of the World War II era along with men like Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, and others. And The Nicholas Brothers were very young with this was filmed. They would go on to be booked to perform in numerous other motion pictures because if audiences knew they were in the movie, they were box office gold. This dance scene was once described by Fred Astaire, who is thought by many to be the greatest dancer who ever lived, as "the greatest dance number ever captured on film." Astaire ought to know a thing or two about legendary dance numbers captured on film. There was no “almost fall” or misstep. They killed it perfectly every single time. They were the masters of dance and all dancers then and now are in awe of their amazing talent. Fred Astaire ,a legend, stated that there were none better than the Nicholas Brothers and this was a flawless performance; if he didn’t see a misstep, it didn’t exist. This was 1943 during the Big Band Era and right in the middle of WW2.

Cab Calloway is a motherf***ing legend.

My mom told me that she seen the Nicolas Brothers live at the Apollo Theater. My grandfather (her dad) took her to see them when she was a kid. She said to see them do this live, is incredibly. This scene here is from a movie called "Stormy Weather". The Nicolas Brothers did one rehearsal, and then shot the entire dance scene in only one take. Nice reaction. 😊

It's so cool to see you totally digging this. It's about 20 years before my time but I have a deep appreciation for it. And the MC there is cab calloway, who was kind of The Godfather of the black Harlem Renaissance opulent period. Tap dancing was huge back then. 1943. Hey, you're young and you've just been introduced to some of the most fabulous entertainers from a time period which most people don't even know existed...and don't care about, either. Now you've got plenty of time to discover more of these guys and others. The legendary Cotton Club in Harlem (100 years ago)..check it out. Also, Cab Calloway, late in his life, appeared in a big role in "The Blues Brothers" (1980). You've got to see him magically transformed onstage from 1980 back to his Cotton Club glory...white tails and all.. and singing his signature tune "Minnie the Moocher" to a theater filled with 1980 blues fans. It's the highlight of a very funny film, and Cab's performance really is something to treasure.

Their granddaughters and now dancing! These brothers are fabulous. They also had a dance piece in the movie called The Pirate with Judy Garland and Gene Kelly.

There was no misstep. These guys could dance like nobody’s business.

Cab, the director, singer, was a master of Scat. Scat was singing, that if you forgot the lyrics, you faked it with class.

Growing up in the "60"s We would watch all the movies , musicals, music shows and everything else from the "30"s,"40"s and "50" it was AWESOME , I REMEMBER watching this so many times!! 😍🎶🎹🎷🕺

The original one take wonders! This was done in one take with not a lot of rehearsal. They were extremely talented brothers who were dedicated to their craft. Something I wish we had more of today!

1940's Big Band Era, Cab Calloway a major star, a real legend and the Nicholas Brothers were unparalleled dancers, no one, even the dancing legends at the time or since could do the things they did in their dance routines. Historical times in entertainment. This whole dance sequence was done in one shot, no AI, no CGI just pure unadulterated talent.

Yep, it's fun seeing the past. When folks say they aren't a fan of history it's a sure thing there is something from the past they will be interested in. I've watched this performance many times now & it still gets me. I believe this is from the 40's because I've seen a longer version of this performance & the crowd gets up to dance & all the men are in uniform from WWII.

Swing music is a lot of fun to hear ! I have to plug the one contemporary Swing band I got into recently - Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. They are a class act ! Saw them live 5yrs ago and got to see them killin it up close. Their cover of Cab’s “Minnie The Moocher” is a hot one and there’s also “Mr Pinstripe Suit” with it’s cool video.

this was filmed in one take and with no rehearsal if I remember correctly. the nicholas brothers were self taught.

It's fun watching folks' first-time reactions to the Nicholas Brothers and how they're amazed at the start of their dance here and knowing that there's so much more and amazing to come.

Since you're listening to music from this era I recommend Ella Fitzgerald. She was an excellent singer known as 'The Queen Of Jazz' and 'First Lady Of Soul'. Names she very much deserved as her voice is absolutely incredible. I recommend her version of Over the Rainbow. Although I could only find an audio video version for that one. If you want a actual video to react to I recommend looking up some of her performances on The Ed Sullivan Show. Some of my favorites performances are Thanks For The Memory, I'm Old Fashioned, S'Wonderful, Hotta Chocolatta, and It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing). Ps. Hilariously my Lupus fogged mind got this song and another one mixed up, so initially I was confused when they started singing. The name of the other song is Jump, Jive, an' Wail. 😆 It's a Lupus day look over me. I haven't tried to drink my paint water yet. I'm counting it as a win. 😂

After watching this originally, I fell down a Nicholas Brothers rabbit hole and there are so many great dance performances by them. They were incredible.

The brothers only 5 '4" and 5'2". They were NOT twins. They were 7 years ago in age. 1904, 1921.Calloway performs the song with his orchestra and the Nicholas Brothers in the 1943 MUSICAL MOVIE Stormy Weather.

1943 Film Stormy Weather . The Nicolas Brothers. I was lucky enough to see a Tap Extravaganza in the 1980 s put on by the great Gregory Hines featuring a teenage Savion Glover and a large crowd of the best living Tap dancers including surviving Nicolas Brothers. Amazing show ☮️

This is 100% entertainment value. The Nicholas Brothers were the BEST specialty act Hollywood ever had.

These dancers, the Nicholas Brothers, are exceptional dancers and would never make a faux pas in kicking an orchestra member. There are no missteps. These two brothers are perfectionists. There will never be another pair as the Nicholas Brothers.

I also recommend the Blues Brother movie. It starred Dan Akroyd and Jim Belushi trying to raise money to save the orphanage they were raised in by a nun. So they decided to get cash by robbing a bank truck. It also had a lot of stars you might recognize. Cab Calloway was in it, too.

WOW !!!...Everybody went wild when Michael Jackson did his Moonwalk I believe in the 90s, and these guys danced on the rest of the palnets in the 40s.....AMAZING !!

Yes Tap Dancing but they were very acrobatic and created, yes Flash Dancing! Their style was individual and was called Flash Dancing at the time. RIP Patrick Swayze.

I highly encourage you to spend time watching the old movies of the forties and fifties. It will help with old customs faster then any history book or class ever will. It will also give you a jumping off point for old music, mysteries, dramas, and customs. Some of which we are better off having in our history, the further back the better.

Even Fred Astaire named them as the best dancers EVER. That was not a mis-step. It is tap dancing. This generation don't understand performance flair. A lot of the movements are creative style and flair. I'm glad you digged their video. They influenced MJ, Janet, Gregory Hines, Paula Abdul, and many others.

I know I'm three days out on this but I would guess that Michael was a big fan of theirs and picked up some moves by trying some of theirs.

So much music history lost. Glad you found some of it. Scat is amazing. People used to make ACTUAL music. My parents danced to this and brought me up on big band music. Everybody danced this way in the nightclubs and speakeasies.
