Laying down the floor beams! Things are moving along as I try and get ahead of the winter weather that's coming.
** EDIT ** I did not know how to mount the beams to the concrete originally. It seems kinda simple but for whatever reason, I couldn't wrap my head around it. If you keep watching episodes, you will see that I eventually use dry anchors (wedge bolts) into the piers and attach the beams. Better late than never!
WINTER IS COMING.

I don't recommend piling dirt up around the piers because it allows termites to travel a shorter distance before they reach wood. They will even travel across a treated beam to get to untreated wood. A piece of square sheet metal placed on top of the piers with the edges bent downward will make for an inexpensive termite shield.

Yes, I’m watching all your videos in order. Been through a microwaveable pizza, and two ice cream cups. Lol I’m actually going to build a home for myself soon on a piece of land that my parents gave me. So this content really is helping me more than you know. I appreciate the jokes and just being human as well. Dropping the tape measure. Using your drill as a hammer every now and then. It’s real life. Glad to know I’m not the only one doing those things. Concrete poles in ep one are gold for me. I’m learning more than you could understand

If you keep watching episodes, you will see that I eventually use dry anchors (wedge bolts) into the piers and attach the beams. Better late than never! Looking back I wish I had the confidence to put wet anchors in the concrete but was scared they wouldn't be square.

That’s why you needed batter boards to pull a string over the tubes with wet concrete. Then you set them in a perfect straight line.

Not only were you wasting your time putting the dirt from your vegetable garden around your concrete peers, you’ve created a very handy entrance for the termites to get into your cabin! That was a very bad idea! Now you should go back and remove all that dirt and just let the concrete show and that gives you the advantage of seeing any termite tubes coming up the side of the concrete to your cabin!

I think these early episodes are your best and most enjoyable. You are an absolutely fantastic teacher, producer and I have gotten energized to build in part because of you. My only suggestion is to take out some of the added music and let the content exist a little more. Quietly building a small cabin is by itself some of the best mental health therapy I have. I can relax to just watching this and you describing what’s going on. It’s how I can relax in 2020: relaxing and learning.

For your garden maybe you should try adding sand in with your soil, it may help
@fernando9175
@fernando9175 4 года назад
One tip next time you build wood beams cut sheats of plywood of 3/4" in by the 1/2" less than the beam width by 8' or 10'. Try to make a sandwich with the plywood and the 2 beams and in the middle try to leave like a channel of 1/4" deep. Then nailed down both sides. However for extra strenght and prevention of funny sounds like squaking it can come after beign built. Build the sandwitch using liquid nails. That will hep the structure to gain a lot of strengh more than the just 2 beams attach together
@WoodnessGoodness
@WoodnessGoodness 4 года назад
Ah! Thanks for this pro tip! That sounds bomb proof! My next cabin I will take this into the plan making.
@fernando9175
@fernando9175 4 года назад
@@WoodnessGoodness If you want another tip. When you decide in your plans. Where to make the pipe columns. Not only make holes for the columns. Try to excavate 1 feet more than the area you are planning to build on. Escavate 6 inches and make the whole lo level then making the holes in the appropiate place your plans suggest and allow them to be at leat 4 feet deep. Then after dry. Try to make the holes and prepared them for the utilities such as plumbing electrical or anything that goes underground and place them where you are planning to go according to your planning. And build it to go outside where the plumber electrician may come and finish it. Then with those pipes at leat 1' 1/2 feet above the ground level. Try to flat the dirt and make like a dirt slab leveled all around with 6 inch deep. See videos on how to build an concrete slab with plastic. Then do the same and over everything. Use mesh rebar Then when putting concrete make and slope of 1/2" from the ends of the area toward the drain pipe you installed Make it nice and neat And let it dry. Why this because you want the property be protected in the foundations from animals, water, and seasonal stuff. Also you may want to have a crawl space for cheap with no brick intallation where you can fix leaks or anything in a clean place Also you want no cracks and no flooding from ground up due to erosion then this is why you may want to out plastic to avoid humidity in the slab. Plus it will protect your foundation from natural issues in ground to last for several years. Now how you cover the outside? Well after you build you first floor try to cover with wood the sorrounding area expose between the concrete slab an the first floor. Make a door way for you can enter the space and some holes for the place may have ventilation. For vapor relief. Them paint the surface of the same with paint that may help mortar and wood to bond then with some steel mesh for stucco nail it with nails and make some mortar and do some stucco yourself. This method is cheaper than building brick around the house and is fast.and protect. How to save on concrete or mortar. Buy portland cement by bag and buy gravel and sand by yard Rent some concrete drum for cheap. And build it mix it with a electrical generator that may good enough to supply the machine. The ratios for cement, water. sand and gravel you can esily find them online up to 10,000 psi wich is twice the psi any premix concrete home depot bag have. There are types of cement of portland vary by uses So buy type S used for foundation retaining walls and rough structures.

so I have a question, let's say if you wanted to go this route (cabin on peirs).....but lived in a northern climate like Canada. If you wanted to run water from a well, usually you need a heated crawlspace or foundation, but what if you ran the water pipe through an insulated and heated box up through the floor, could that be done? is that a thing?

Bringing the dirt up the concrete to the wood is begging for insects to be part of your home. You can insulate the pilings, and not with dirt? Your area under the shed/house cabin should be sealed and free of moisture and excess dirt piles. 14' runs shoulb be 12" or greater You say 12' ft boards but looks like you chose undersize 8" rough, whimpy ones you are doubling? Do you hasve a height restriction in the woods. I hope your rim joists also sit fiully on pilings, we will see iof you hang them off of nails screws or hangers?
