Cabin in the Woods Part 15: Metal Roof Standing Seam Valley Pan Installation

In this episode of Cabin in the Woods, I continue the metal roof standing seam details by sharing how we install the valley pan at the peak where two valleys come together and a ridge cap will be terminating. This is one of the harder standing seam details in my opinion and I am sure there are many ways to do it. Please leave me a comment if you thought it was good, but more importantly, if you have another method or link to a video showing a different and better way.
A lot have asked about the metal brake we have been using. It is the last piece in the puzzle of our snap table pro. It is a niche trailer filled with every tool you need to properly prep your standing seam panels. I will show it in its full glory soon.

This is what I totally appreciate all of that detail at that valley peak. you could have easily cut it "good enough for government work and then put the good ole "magic juice" but no, you did it to the very best of your ability! I also notice (weather you notice it not) but every piece you put up, it's like the very first piece you put on. Not only are you building to the very best of your ability but, you are teaching Greg craftsmanship, patience and attention to detail besides; taking us along with you. you sir sleep like a baby at night knowing you have the very best in your skills! Your clients are super to have you as a craftsman. I know Larry Haun would be impressed! Thank you sir for all the hard work and all the filming and editing. I for one am very grateful for all the hard work!

There used to be a time when craftsmen didn't use sealant or caulk and things didn't leak. What's interesting is many of today's "craftsmen" are charging way more for their services than any time in American history, yet the end product is substandard compared to past history.
@Robbievigil
@Robbievigil 4 года назад
This is not an example of that. It used to be that there were no sealers and adhesives to be used. I guarantee if the technology was available old timers would have used it.

46.49°?? What happened to the 43.5° you've talked about all throughout the valley tin application???
@RRBuildings
@RRBuildings 4 года назад
The 46.49 is the opposite angle of the bottom when entering the valley. All triangles add up to 180 degrees. One angle is 90, the other two have to add up to 90. One is 43.51 and 46.59

I know this comment is pretty late, but I'm 15 videos into this series. I love how detailed you guys are. I feel like if I was in the construction trades, this is how I would be. It's not always about speed and quantity. I'd probably starve if I relied on those factors. I love taking my time and doing it right, and when I hire a contractor I expect professional results. Otherwise I'd just do it myself. I'm always willing to pay more for a service if it's done right. You guys are awesome! Enjoy the content and the positive work environment you and Greg have with each other. That's pretty uncommon on most trades videos I watch. I should mention that I work in IT, but most of my RU-vid history is filled with watching people do their trades. It's just very interesting to me.

Once in my neighborhood Johnson's had a dream to fix up their house so they hired Euroclad for the roof. Their old roof was in bad shape, with holes and leaks everywhere. They put their faith in Euroclad's know-how. A nice crew showed up without any fuss and turned the Johnson's roof into a copper showpiece that got the neighbors talking. The Johnson's felt proud and safe, like they had a brand-new house, thanks to Euroclad's top-notch work.

Is there a certain multiplier for roof size to reduce having to cut and mess with things? Like a 20x30 roof is best? Or 12x18? I know enough to be dangerous. I am a young widow and my teens and I are planning to build a dry cabin in the next 1-2 years when we move to Alaska. I am power watching video series and learning and after you spoke about planning ahead when doing the underlayment (believe it was video #14 of this series and YES! PLEASE do a video over formulas. I believe in math too but wouldn't mind cheat sheets based on standard sizes.) could I reduce a lot of beginner struggle by making everything certain size? I know you market and teach to those who do this for a living but I REALLY appreciate your sharing. I also agree you can never have too many tools but when you can't rent and you are only building a few dry cabins what is the financial roi....can you do a series for good, better, best in which tools per job? Ex: hand brake vs that super fancy roller thing. OR hammer and nail vs roof nailer. I understand power always wins but when you are a beginner and have minimal/basic tools ... Another thing I would love to see is a price range for what materials cost and how it would compare to an alternative. Standing seam vs metal roof vs dimensional shingles type thing. Thanks again. I am loving this cabin series and while I wanted a metal roof I am now wanting the standing seam. I never understood why you'd screw through and create a weak point but didn't realize there was an alternative. Stay safe!

Most roofs have a pattern, and it looks like you've got it down. I could teach you how to put a 1" dbl folded seam in the top of that valley, eliminate those screws and you'd only need caulking at the pinch points. Also, putting in J-chan at the peak and boxing the pan tops, makes it super easy for cap install. Anyways, good job guys.

midwest make a long bill offset snip that is awesome for cutting both max rib and standing seam,just use short bills for cutting through the double thicknesses such as the male part of the standing seam. i have recently started using a 6" depth dewalt bandsaw(20 volt) and after adding the 1" for the fold cut the line then cut through the male side at the fold line ,use snips to miter the cut to intersect at end of band saw cuts at the end of the day your hands will thank you ...summer time hand cramps sux and hurt
@apt7777
@apt7777 3 года назад
Is it possible to miter that valley W trim and solder the joint from the back... maybe work up a piece with 2' tails into the exact point you need based on your math and the valley. Use like a 2" strip to go across the back of the seam to get a good hold of both pieces as they come together. Smooth as can be, a lot less joints and laps.

Why not grab a piece of high temp peel and stick and put it overtop of that area? Just enough so you don't see it when putting the ridge capping on? Surely peel and stick is better than your cut and caulking.

Really impressive work! I'm learning a lot about mostly technique and the different products you use which is basically the majority of what a carpenter does for the most part I would say. I'm going to build a shop using the method you are using with a metal roof but probably or most likely, wood and brick siding. I was actually thinking of building the framing out of steal since the prices are low right now but I'm not sure. What do you think about building the same buildings that you build out of steal verses wood like you use?
