Wow. I was really shocked at how quickly the roots grew over 2 weeks. Much faster than if you just lay them out and wait for them to grow a tiny root.

NEVER EVER touch Bunny cactus without wearing gloves. The glochids are barbs thinner than hair and numerous numbers of them will embed themselves in your skin, causing a lot of irritation.

I was watching them grab the cactus with his bare hands with my mouth agape, and came running to the comments to find this comment to ease my mind. I knew surely I couldn't have been the only one in complete shock watching the horror. otherwise it was a very informative video. Thank you kindly for also sharing this concern.

I’ve handled it without gloves but maybe it was because it was a younger plant, the barbs didn’t get in my fingers.

They suck when they get in your eyes and under your nails. If you have a beard and they get in your facial hair, you have to deal with em for several showers...
@radhawolf4649

Planted and replanted without gloves or anything. The spikes are rather soft and harmless, but if you DO get painful irritation from cacti just place your hands in hot water, the heat makes the gentle spike structle to dissipate,and irritation under skin will eventually pass
@erikm8372
@erikm8372 3 года назад
Two notes: I heard that if you mist these cacti with water then the spines become super heavy and don’t stick you as much. At least It will weigh them down and prevent them from becoming airborne and dislodged from the plant. And another thing, all species of cacti will regenerate a new plant from just one areole, the place where the spines grow out of. You could literally lay a pad on the ground and it will root into the ground. As long as you ignore it LOL
@erikm8372

Basically you can chop up a cactus into 1 billion pieces and Simply lay them on dry soil in the shade; watch them re-grow and make roots.

Yes, no gloves. This is an opuntia "microdasys" - the dwarf version. On my end, its just fine to touch it as long as you don't press it hard. It is different from the thorny prickly pears or "Opuntia" - the big version. Wearing gloves is best, but this is just my personal preference :)
@stevenschnepp576
@stevenschnepp576 6 лет назад
Weird. I'm just the opposite; the big thorns I can deal with and avoid a lot better than the tiny prickly hairs that get into your skin at the slightest provocation. I was cringing every time I saw you twisting the pads.
@succulentsforbeginners
@succulentsforbeginners 6 лет назад
Hi Steven, thank you for your comment. It really depends on personal preference, I can handle both bristle hairs and big thorns by hand :) and I'm used to it, so it hinders me doing these things with something on. I might wear something in the future so some viewers can concentrate on the process rather than on the thorns heheheheh!

Great video! I do have a couple questions. We recently moved, I put the pot in a room and forgot about it for 2-3 months. There are 3-4 in the pot, each having grown maybe 8" with all the lobes. Just noticed the base lobe (in the dirt) is basically rotted and brown, but the rest is fine. Another, a middle lobe is soft and yellow and the rest is fine. I'd be inclined to separate the bad parts and replant the good parts, but wasn't sure if they'd survive with regrowing root systems. The video makes me think they grow pretty fast. Help and thanks!

I have a bunny ear cactus infested by mealybug. After sterilizing it with 70% isopropyl alcohol, the main was in very bad shape to survive. I took the three small ears (about 1cm in length) off in a hope of propagating them. They are not very infested, but I sprayed them with alcohol and tried physically remove the bugs as well. I live in the DC area in USA. It is now 3 days from November. Would you suggest to let them sit through the winter and propagate them in spring or I can just do it now? I live in an apartment with southwest facing window. In mid winter, the room temperature will be kept at around 62-64F. Thanks for your suggestion!

Abhishek Patil - hi, no I did not use rooting hormone here. If you use rooting hormone, your succulents will get more established faster. When is it advisable? - it's just a matter of preference. The seller told me that to propagate is twist the pad and put in the soil, but he did not tell me to wait for 24 hours. Does it have any problem if I did not wait? And I don't need to do anything with mother's wound (I don't know how to say in English. I mean the original one's wound), right? The other question, I got pricked by its glochids at my arms and forearms, even I wore gloves. I don't know how did it fly to prick me there. How do you handle this problem?
@succulentsforbeginners
@succulentsforbeginners 5 лет назад
Does it have any problem if I did not wait? Ans: It's ok as long as your soil is totally dry and you did not water it until it grow roots I got pricked by its glochids at my arms and forearms, even I wore gloves. I don't know how did it fly to prick me there. How do you handle this problem? Ans: wash it with soap. As long as glochids just stick to your front of fingers (skin similar to palm), its easy to remove them. But if they reach at the back of your fingers and other parts of your skin, it can get very irritating and itchy. So when handling this, make sure not to touch any part of "bunny ears" with your skin other than the skin of your front fingers (skin similar to palm area)

Hi Sheilene Villeza, that's a sign that your opuntia is not getting enough sun. The elongated growth will not fatten up but the new growths will grow rounded pads when exposed to sun properly. Just dont forget to slowly introduce it to sun like 3hours in the first week, another 3hours in the second week and so on

Mine do that over the winter while they are indoors, I dont give them any direct sun so they grow leaning toward the nearest window. Im in upstate NY, not cacti friendly during winter. Every few weeks I turn the pot a bit and by springtime they look almost like a spiral. Some grow 5 or 6 inches. During the summer some get thicker and grow new ears and some break off and keep growing.Some of them look very odd. 10 years ago someone gave me 2 of these and now have 50 or 60 + gave away a bunch. Also have a bunch of other cacti species.🌵🙂

Hi Mirtel, thank you for the comment. I absolutely know those things but despite of that I can handle well with bare hands. I know someone will react to it like you that's why I put a warning sign in the video saying "warning, use gloves". Not many people can handle bunny ears by hand :)

You shouldn't water the soil, because of scars the plant is likely to be affected by mold or fungi

I just keep it moist, on my part everyday or every other day sometimes.

I have this cactus and it keeps flopping over, how can I keep it standing straight up and growing tall without cutting it down??
@succulentsforbeginners
@succulentsforbeginners 5 лет назад
I can't say because I did not see it. It could be that the top part is heavy for it. Cutting it down might be a good option though if this is the case

My very large Bunny Ear has some pads that are getting pale and drooping. Anyone wanna help figure this out for me please?
@succulentsforbeginners
@succulentsforbeginners 11 месяцев назад
It could be lack of sun. Or it's a natural aging. Or fungus or insects. These are the possibilities

Hey! What is the watering interval after getting the roots?
@succulentsforbeginners
@succulentsforbeginners 2 года назад
when the soil it totally dry, you can water them. It really depends on many factors but that's the basic

I cut my bunny ear cactus in half 3hrs ago because it has rotten. Do I need to wait for the wound to heal before potting it or do I have to wait for a week? I'm confused coz other tutorial say that it should be potted after cutting but others say that u have to wait. Please answer because my cactus might die. 😭
@succulentsforbeginners
@succulentsforbeginners 4 года назад
you can do either of this two things: 1. pot it directly in a totally dry soil 2. wait for it to callus over for like 2-5days whichever you want, both works just fine remember to put it away from direct sun (place in shaded) because it might get dehydrated

@succulentsforbeginners
@succulentsforbeginners 5 лет назад
Hi Sumitra Subba, thank you for watching and for your comment. I'm not sure I understand what you mean, but are you asking which is better - grafting or potting? If this is your question, it depends on the type of cactus or succulent. There are cactus that grows faster when grafted. While this bunny ear cactus I find them to grow faster if we cut it in pads and pot it. You can also comment here in your own language, internet will translate it for me :)

Hi Dominique Scalia, thanks for watching. There are lots of factors to consider like animal attack, water problems, roots insects attack or somebody might have bumped into it... Hard to tell without visual though :)

I need more info on this. It could be overwater, underwatered, insect infestation, or oversun exposure...
