I’m living in Midwest and was given a two and half foot long cutting from a friend couple, on November 12th 2023. Planted in cactus mix and friends said NOT to water. It’s now Jan 30th, 2024 and I noticed the plant was more soft than before and sorta wrinkly. So I RU-vidd and found your video. I just finished watering the thirsty gal!!! I hope any roots that may have started did not dry up and die 🙏 before I did. 🤷‍♂️ Of course in the Midwest i must bring this in for winter; fortunately I have a nice grow area downstairs with florescent T5s and Spider Farmer LEDS. I over winter many succulents and tropicals. Anyways, I thank you for this video and hopefully this desert girl grows tall and strong. Although seeing how big they get it may be difficult to bring in next year. I’ll find a way tho!!😊 Cheers from Indiana.

God bless you Carmen. Hope you are doing well. I just bought a small cactus, very similar to yours but it doesn't have a lot of cactus "flesh" in the middle. The grooves are very deep and they almost meet in the middle. I repotted the cactus when I got home and noticed that it did not have any roots. It was a local nursery. I think they just cut it, let it callus and put it to be sold. I am so glad you made this video, it's just what I what I needed. And thank you for replying to my last comment, it was very helpful. Have a wonderful day Carmen, God bless you

Yes, it sounds like a cutting that they just placed in the pot. I would treat it just like a cactus. Make sure it gets at least morning sun, water only when soil is completely dry. You can sprinkle in a couple tablespoons of worm castings for fertilizer if you want. Hope this helps. 💚😊🐶

Hi! Very helpful video! My cactus was recently broken in half by our naughty dogs so I am going to let it callous, and then plant like your video, but in a new pot. Do you have suggestions for what type of soil content I need for it? My first one was gifted to me and already had an established soil so I'm unsure what it needs ♡
@carmenwhitehead

I like to use Tank's Green Stuff Cactus soil. But, you need very fast draining and chunky soil. If you do use store bought soil, add some perlite to make it chunkier.

So glad you enjoyed the video and it was helpful. If you're drying them indoors, I would choose the room that has the lease humidity and maybe dry them up to 10 days instead of 7. You can check the cutting by pressing your finger on the wound and see if it feels dry and firm. Good luck!

Hi. Great video! 💚When they don't have roots and you're trying to get roots, how often should you give them water. I'm scared to cause root rot 😳 when you do give the cutting water so you just mist the top layer a little or water all the way through?
@carmenwhitehead
@carmenwhitehead 9 месяцев назад
I wait at least a week for the cutting to harden off. Then place it in dry soil. I wait another week before giving it a first watering. Make sure it's a gritty mix for cacti or succulents. I then wait till it's dry again before watering again. Good luck!

Do you know what kind of soil is being used? I’ve seen some soil that’s for cacti, palm and citrus and normal potting soil. I have a whole bunch that needs a good trim and I want to make sure I give them the right soil.
@OffGridInvestor
@OffGridInvestor 10 месяцев назад
Basically 2/3 normal potting mix WITHOUT added fertiliser and the remaining 1/3 perlite. I have about 200 cacti of this family. Cacti fertiliser is quite different from regular fertiliser and it should only get it twice a year in the hotter months. That's why you don't want potting soil with fertiliser in it. And the formula I explained here is the standard amongst cacti people because we see cacti potting mix as a rip off.

Don't worry about the slant. Doesn't really matter. Cinnamon keeps the fungi from attacking the fresh cut. Personally I use sulphur because that's the industrial version. And because local vineyards have literally tons and my father got a bunch.
@bg4599
@bg4599 Год назад
When you cut it do you have to wait a couple of days to repot or can you just repot immediately?
@carmenwhitehead
@carmenwhitehead Год назад
I always wait a few days and let the cut portion dry over or callous over, before placing in soil. This will help reduce rotting.
@OffGridInvestor
@OffGridInvestor 10 месяцев назад
If you don't let it dry well, it will just rot a big brown mess and you have to start again after cutting the rotten base off and getting a new batch of soil. Also don't keep the soil damp while rooting. Let it dry out almost completely before watering pretty well but not enough to make it flow out the bottom of the pot. Most people keep it barely damp. Columnar cacti are crazy in the fact that they can start roots by LAYING DOWN. I have a 3 inch chunk broken off from collapse after wind that has rooted although the chunk is a messy piece. It has a huge big shoot coming up from it about 9 inches long, just from that ragged 3 inch piece laying on the ground. Someone dug it up from sand and I bought it from them.
