The mage is an interesting character. His offense is strong enough to oneshot several of the game's boss enemies, but he's still one of the harder characters to win with. He levels up much faster than the other classes, attaining level 20 with only 22,000 exp.
At 17:20 I make the unorthodox move of trading away my staff of fire for a weaker iron wand. This is because the mage can only have one magic effect active at a time, so the staff's fireballs will interfere with his spellcasting. The iron wand's slightly lower attack power doesn't matter because everything I kill with it would take the same number of hits with the staff of fire.

I used to spend all my quarters on this back in the day.. what a classic. so incredibly hard never made it much past the gnome village though, was a kid with only a few bucks in quarters each try (but kept coming back each week). Playing it again as an adult is quite the nostalgic trip, insanely tough game. (for me anyway)

Nice, but you forgot 1 secret. As you climb down from town into the water, 2nd vine down push left side on wall. You'll get the item that makes screen flash when there's a hidden item on that segment

Ive watched this playthrough three times and its exceptional. I would like to see the Priest and Mage co op and both using all of their spells to really showcase what they can do w their versatility in magic

I discovered this game was available on the Switch eShop. I got it and immediately chose mage, because I’ve never seen him played or played as him before. I then proceeded to get my ass thoroughly kicked. I just about got my money’s worth in quarters worth of plays from dying so much. I even got past the black slime not knowing how to cast spells. It was shortly afterward I determined I was going to figure out how to cast spells. “Okay, there are two buttons and a directional stick. How hard could this be. Up attack actually does something! Just not magic. Right. Down attack is just a crouch attack. Press both? Just a bad jump attack. Uhhh… Charge attack? There it is!” I had only played it once in the very early ‘90’s, and didn’t sink many quarters into it because it was a particularly egregious quarter muncher in those days.

Forgot to mention! I didn't get far enough back then, but it was really rare for a game to actually change your weapon model when you got a new one. Magic Sword in the arcade and Faxanadu for NES were about the only games from the same era that you saw new weapon models for different weapons.

Mage was the only one I couldn't complete it with because of the anti-magical monsters in the castle at the end. Having watched this play through though, the ones in this version can totally be killed by magic. It was the grey tentacaly creatures that were static on platforms.

The grey ropers are invincible while spawning, but I believe magic works on them in every region of the arcade game. Were you on one of the console ports?

Yeah I like that the mage can hand out beatings almost as well as the fighter can.

There doesn't seem to be a way through the zombie-town without tanking it/taking damage, is there. Pretty impressive how much of the nasty later game you were able to get through with so little health.

It's possible to get through without taking damage. Zombie spawns (as with all enemies in the game) are tied to camera movement rather than a timer, so you can slowly creep through and deal with one or two at a time. But that's boring. A better method is to destroy their heads, which have 1 hp, and then jump over the legs. The mage is by far the worst character at the point in the game - his attack and agility are poor, and the zombies' lower bodies are immune to magic - so he might have to take it slow. The other classes will have a much easier time, especially the priest. To my knowledge, the only unavoidable damage in the game comes from the tree monster at 4:45, the fire elemental boss, and Baarogue.

My mom used to give 2 morrocan coins. I had to be very very carful or the game will finish and i start watching other kids for hours. Make it to the gnome village. Never after tho. Forget the name of the game but never the music of the octopus level. Man....
