In this video I have a look at a Cadillac DTS that was towed in from my used car guy. He picked it up at the auction as a no start. They replaced the starter and the battery but it still will not crank over. Let's see what it really needs. -Enjoy!

The biggest and most famous Northstar problem was the head bolts pulling up out of the block and stripping the threads. It spawned a whole industry to repair the problem. But that was the first few years of production, '97-'99, and the 2000 semi-fix involving longer head bolts helped but did not fix them entirely. But in 2004, bigger head bolts with coarser threads were used, and no more problems after that - aside from the usual GM type issues that were far less serious. So the used car guy was probably on to something.

A basic scan tool would have send them in that direction. So its safe to assume they didn't try that. Therefor only were able to conclude that when the key turns the starter doesn't work. They also didn't notice the fuel pump didn't activate. If they did they wouldn't have tried to fix it with a starter. Its actually quite logical why they did what they did. From a 'limited information' and 'basic understanding of a car' point of view. At the very least they attempted to fix the problem themselves, which unfortunately didn't work. Can't fault people for trying. I mean if it so happened to be the starter... they would have fixed it. Not trying would have resulted in no results either. No guts, no glory :)

Those turds are big because it’s a big engine, if it was 1.8 or similar, the turds would be a lot smaller.
@flagmichael
@flagmichael 3 года назад
Sometimes they are the wrong size, and have to be returned for the proper size. The shipping delays are what makes the job take so long. "Ma'am, the turds were the wrong size from the supplier. Air boxes were so full of mesquite seeds and insulator pad fibers, it maxed out the air filter minder! Mileage went in the tank as well. That was textbook! Great video, and well explained. I bought a Caravan a couple years back, a very shoddily rebuilt vehicle that had been hit hard right where the fuse box, PCM, and body harnesses meet. Shredded probably half the wires. How many wires is that? There are 192 pins on the PCM alone. I knew the wiring was junk when I bought it, but I love electrical stuff. Spent a week going over the wires with a powerful light and dental mirror, looking for nicks or damage, and repairing everything. Over 100 nice neat solder splices, going around each splice with a smooth-jaw pliers after soldering to make sure there weren't any pointy bits sticking out, then double-wall heat shrink tubing. I also loved that you actually soldered the wires like you need to do for a reliable fix. Too many guys use crimps or even wire nuts (aka Marette connectors). Or just twist the wires together and electrical tape them, like these chumps did with the airbag wires in my Caravan. One thing I would recommend that I didn't see you use is double-wall heat shrink tubing, which has a lining of hot-melt glue. Otherwise moisture will get in to the copper wires and cause corrosion which WILL eat completely through the wire in 5 years or less.

Everybody's wires are. Mice climb up the tires and get into engine compartments and air intakes, and then the party starts. When I worked in IT Field Services for a large electric utility we had a lot of trouble with pack rats at mountaintop sites; they not only chewed wires, they chewed coolant hoses. Sometimes half the hose would be gouges. Then we would call the company who maintained the APUs and called our "rat patrol" department. They found the entries, stuffed steel wool in them, and filled them with urethane foam.

Just had a flashback from when I was a young man.(18) I was hard on my Moms car. A 1966 Chevy 6 cylinder. I fried the clutch so I had to get it fixed. Brought it to a friends shop. They put new clutch, throw-out bearing etc etc. When it was all done I got in and was backing out of the garage. I did not realize the door was open as far as it was. Needless to say I snapped the hinges in half.. (pot metal) Long story short got the door back on and locked it. Forgot to tell my Mom about it. When she went to open the door, it fell to the ground..lol Boom. Just wondering if you have ever had this happen? Thanks for the walk down memory lane..51 years ago

I chased down a bad "o2 sensor" on one of these, after and ecu swap it was fixed. Your channel is part of the reason i was able to chase the wire all the way to the ecu that had a dead o2 sensor channel:) voltage on wire was solid, while ecu reading was jumping all over , rather that shotgunning an O2 sensor like the mechanic that "fixed" it before me. The real fun is getting that car to pass one of the emissions tests involving deceleration for 60mph.( It nearly idles at 58-65mph.)

I'd say a rat chewed on the wiring,as far as the 4.6 litre Chevrolet Northstar V8 engine goes, they're good once the cylinder head bolt thread problem is fixed, they blew gaskets because the thread pitch was too fine & the threads were aluminium so the bolts eventually would pull out then strip.out the threads,they used M11 × 1.5mm bolts. The fix was to fit thread inserts into the engine block to repair the threads, replace the cylinder head bolts & gaskets. I know in my 5.7 litre Chevrolet LS1 V8 engine they were like an M11 × 2mm thread size so it was never a problem in them , Cadillac eventually did that with the Northstar V8 engine to fix the problem,they used M11 × 2mm cylinder head bolts in them instead. They put out 224 kilowatts & they were dumped from their lineup in 2011 leaving a choice between the 210 kilowatt 3.6 litre V6 & the 270 kilowatt 6 litre Chevrolet L76 V8 engine as an option !

The northstar is a great engine if maintained properly. Head bolt issues were fixed in 06. I had a 97 deville that I bought with 130k and put another 30k on it before selling. Didn’t have one issue and all I did to it were coolant changes, brakes, tires, and oil changes. People who say these engines suck are people who buy these without testing them first.
