Café Society directed by Woody Allen, starring Jeannie Berlin, Steve Carell, and Jesse Eisenberg is reviewed by Tim Grierson (Screen International) and Alonso Duralde (TheWrap and Linoleum Knife podcast).
Read what other critics had to say: www.rottentoma...
Set in the 1930s, Woody Allen's bittersweet romance CAFÉ SOCIETY follows Bronx-born Bobby Dorfman (Jesse Eisenberg) to Hollywood, where he falls in love, and back to New York, where he is swept up in the vibrant world of high society nightclub life. Centering on events in the lives of Bobby's colorful Bronx family, the film is a glittering valentine to the movie stars, socialites, playboys, debutantes, politicians, and gangsters who epitomized the excitement and glamour of the age.

Sure the film recycles a lot of Allens tropes and scenarios and poses similar questions, but for the love of god that doesn't make it a bad movie. Think of it in a vacuum and it's a well paced, funny, reasonably insightful, well-acted, good movie.

What a surprise that Alonso didn't like it. Picky dude. Obviously he's entitled to his opinion but I mean come on what does it take to impress him

Woody's last two films have been average or slightly below that. Hoping this is closer to Blue Jasmine and Midnight in Paris, those were very good, especially the latter.

true, but lets be honest. What is going on across the rest of hollywood? We have endless comic book movies. I love them, but they hit the same notes over and over. Its comforting to hope there is SOME variety going forward.

I swear, Woody Allen is trying to find an aesthetic for neurosis in cinema. He is hell-bent on making the same movies over and over.

Woody reworks the same story over and over. I get it. The same criticism is made about Neil Simon's movies. I still enjoy all of them. Some are better than others. Even the lesser ones are still damn good.

First Woody Allen film for me, so had no preconceptions of the style, humour etc. ,, Based on what I heard, that being that his films can feel like they're more or less regurgitations of each other, it probably helped that this was a first for me, but I thought it was very good. Casting was good, and was surprised at how good Kristen Stewart was. Great soundtrack, and the humour worked for me on the most part, but again that might be since I'm new to WA. Definitely not the best film I've ever seen but there was more than enough in it to make me want to see some more of his films

It was a fun watch until it just seemed to promote adultery like that's okay. Which it's not, which is why a lot of pain also comes along with it, when it does happen. Waste of time. It could have been something so much better.
@tthbro

@jasonleetaiwan

The 2 leads actually avoided adultery. I thought the film was about how the two leads did not end up together partly due to timing. The girl made the superficial decision instead of the person she had a better connection with and clearly regretted it by the end of the film.

Why can’t you EVER review a film on its own merit? No one could care any less of which other movie it reminds you. Can you even fathom how irrelevant your review is? A review is supposed to analyze, inform, enlighten, bring up aspects some viewers might have missed. None of that here. You guys are thoroughly dimming.

I can relate the storyline of this movie very much, it's just like me and the girl that I truly love (she loves me too). She can't be with me (at the time) because she already have a boyfriend. I moved on with my life and found myself a girlfriend. But now, we're (me and the girl) both broke up. Watching this movie makes me really wants to get her back.

Paesito Paez I've seen it and thought it was a fun movie, it was well-acted, got laughs all the way through and was gorgeous visually. It's not 'vintage Allen' or anything (I think Midnight in Paris is the closest we're going to get to that at this point in his career) but a 4/10 rating is pretty ridiculous
