What would happen to an astronaut’s body if it were pushed out of a space shuttle? Do people poop when they die? Can Grandma have a Viking funeral? Every day, funeral director Caitlin Doughty receives dozens of questions about death. Doughty takes Town Hall’s stage, bringing us wisdom from her book Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs?: Big Questions from Tiny Mortals About Death to offer a blend of her scientific understanding of the body and the intriguing history behind common misconceptions about corpses. She offers factual, hilarious, and candid answers to urgent questions about what happens if you die on an airplane, the best soil for mummifying your dog, and whether or not you can preserve your friend’s skull as a keepsake. Join Doughty for a look into the fascinating truths about what will happen (to our bodies) after we die.
Caitlin Doughty is a licensed mortician and the New York Times best-selling author of Smoke Gets in Your Eyes and From Here to Eternity. She is the creator of the “Ask a Mortician” web series and founder of The Order of the Good Death.
Presented by Town Hall Seattle as part of the 2019 Homecoming Festival.

re:at 47 minutes. I was given Caitlin's book as a gift to read when I was stuck in hospital after a serious suicide attempt.I know it raised a few2 eyebrows. But it was amazingly entertaining and as she says,it in no way has influenced my notions of suicide. Also,as a non-binary person,I applaud her efforts to express absolute respect for people of all genders,sexuality,races etc. Every human being deserves that amount of respect in death irrespective of their status.

You are my death hero!!!! I dont have to worry about the older generation they are all gone. I'm almost 61 and since I was 5 and my grandfather died I have been panicked by death. Since watching every single one of your videos I've now became comfortable with death. I panic at being sealed in a box under six feet of dirt and concrete or being burned nature burial with a tree growing out of my remains have really fixed all that. I've even talked to my kids and let this be known. They are good with that.

Literally I am slowly accepting that I will die. I didn’t realize that I was scared of dying. I didn’t realize that I needed to talk about death. And at some point I will talk with my parents about it. As well as have all three of us fill out Advance Directives for our state of Montana. I NEED this, I KNOW it will relieve stresses, because it already has.

Our brains have a strong unconscious tendency to avoid our own mortality. It's a price we pay for being sapient yet I have to agree that having my last obligations taken care of makes me much more relaxed for a long term. I want to live but if I happen to die tomorrow my mortgage is insured, my will is written and my funeral planned in said will. My family knows about it and even in shocked state there is not much for them to worry bout in legal sense.

Touring in Japan must have been a "headache"...boink. Unless she stayed in western accommodations, bed length and showerhead height were a daily annoyance too. The opportunity to observe Shinto rituals made any inconvenience miniscule in comparison. My travel companion shared how our gracious host even spent a week altering her late uncle's kimono so that he could be properly attired. In group photos, her uncle was often seated as his 5'9" height posed a challenge. His grandchildren still have the small folding stool he brought to family events so as to not inconvenience the photographer. 🌹

I educate myself on death and the death industry because I have issues with suicide. Im a survivor. I've been obsessed with dying since my Mom abruptly died in front of me when i was 13. (sudden on-set arrhythmia, her heart randomly stopped... she wasn't sick. Her biopsy came back with no cause of death) I have always wanted to be with her, I have always felt there was nothing here for me without her. I think those feelings stemmed from her body being poorly treated after she died. Even at 13 looking at her bloated and waxy looking body... I knew it wasn't right. It haunted me, still does. I could tell (even knowing nothing at that age of how bodys are prepared) that her mouth had been sewn shut. They kept her away from me before they drained her. They took her body away so swiftly a if she was contagious. I wasnt ready to part with her body yet. I was in need of sitting with her and holding her hand. To truly come to terms that she was gone. I was not scared of my mothers lifeless body. It was the body that created me. It was the shell of the woman who kissed me goodnight and took me to school everyday. She died in our living room, I just wanted to sit with her for a while. Educating myself in death has helped me understand my death doesnt have to be that way. I dont have to be a scary bloated wax figurine. I don't need to be swiftly taken away from my loved ones. Someone can hold my hand after I'm gone. Which I would want. It also has just helped me build a healthy relationship with death in general. I am still obsessed with the idea of dying, but in a healthy way... not in a going to take my own life way. Im no longer in a rush. Shout out to Caitlin for helping o many of us.

Hi Caitlin , My best friend from 1966 to current day worked as night attendant at a funeral home. Since he lived there full time we would hang out there in his living quarters. The lady whose husband founded the funeral homes lived on the upper floors and liked having us around as built in security. We were very respectful as befits the purpose of the Establishment. We had several Halloween parties there and made sure to tell our friends that the work rooms and viewing areas were strictly no go zones and if they violated the rule they would not be allowed back. Also, there was an old timey radio show called “The life of Riley” would sometimes have an undertaker named Digger O’Dell. The gallows humor is well worth the time to give it a listen. Looking forward to seeing more of your vids

On the topic of talking to friends about death and suicide, I had a very good friend some years ago, and we'll call him KD. We lived together; him, me and my husband at the time. However, my husband was gone a lot, so me and KD ended up spending many nights out on the back deck, contemplating life and death and everything in between. We were both raised Southern Baptist and had similar family histories, so we had many things in common. One night, he asked me "What would you do if you found out that you had stage IV brain cancer and you maybe had a couple of months to live?" I said, "Well, I wouldn't want to put my family and friends through that all of that, because that's a death sentence, so I would leave everything and everyone and check off as many things as I could on my bucket list, probably go to Disney World one more time; then I would find the tallest tree on the prettiest mountain I could find, and I would hang myself." Around that time, bad things happened between me and my second husband, and we weren't together anymore (not because of KD, before your mind starts spinning...we were just very good friends, and I still miss him so much), so I moved and didn't hear from anyone for a couple of months...but then KD went missing. Everyone was looking for him. He disconnected from the internet, disconnected his phone, and God, I hope he went to Disney. They found him a few months later, hanging from a tree on the TN/NC border in the mountains (beautiful, btw...if you go through there, take I-40 through TN and NC...it's breathtaking), but it was a few months before he was found by some hunters. They did an autopsy and found that he had stage IV brain cancer, stage IV meaning it had invaded his entire body, but it had originated in his brain and apparently there were tumors everywhere. I would have never known it. He seemed fine to me; we just liked to talk and drink (and smoke left-handed cigarettes, hee-hee) out on the back deck. He had been asking me a question about something he already knew was happening to him, and I said I would ultimately kill myself. I have never been able to forgive myself for that. I feel I gave horrible advice to someone who really needed to be held and loved and hugged until his last day. How does a person get over that?
@SouthCountyGal
@SouthCountyGal 7 месяцев назад
I'm so sorry about KD. Please, if you haven't already, consider seeing a therapist. They can be very helpful in the wake of a loved one's suicide. Whenever that guilty feeling starts up, say this to yourself: "His death was not my fault. I was not responsible for his actions. I could not have saved him." I don't mean this in a dismissive way. I am offering advice from my own experience. My brother committed suicide in a similar situation. It might help to think about this from what you can imagine was KD's perspective. We can never know what someone was thinking and feeling when they chose to go through with a suicide, but some deductions are reasonable. KD had advanced cancer. He had to be aware of his diagnosis to have presented you with that supposedly hypothetical scenario. He was going to die soon, and had to be thinking about what his decline would be like. Like most people with a terminal medical diagnosis, he likely felt that he had no control over what this disease would do to his body and his consciousness; how it might erode his personality, his sense of self, as mercilessly as it was ravaging his body. I strongly suspect that he wished for a way to gain some control, and that suicide was already very much on his mind. At most, your conversation gave him a beautiful, adventurous plan to consider. It must have resonated with him, or he would have chosen a different scenario. But he may well have chosen to end his own life regardless of whether you had that conversation. KD's death was a deliberate choice, obviously planned in advance. Creating this plan may well have brought him peace during the time between your conversation and his death.

If I had been more aware of my mortality when I was young.. I believe I wouldn't have made so many mistakes, or made so many of the negative choices I made. When your young you feel like adulthood, old age.... is soooooooo far away.. like you can put off responsibilities for awhile and get back to later.. like school, starting a career, ect... but that while tends to become a wee bit longer than awhile... then becomes a habit... and so many find themselves in the adulthood and realize they never got around to their desires and wasted their life.. bc they thought they had forever.

But isn't it "hallowed grounds"? Also, "Oh, I wasn't expecting a woman" isn't sexism. "Uh, can I get a man instead?" and "Are you really capable of doing that job?" and "You've only been given that job because you're a female" are examples of sexism, all of which I've heard as a forklift driver and electrician.
