Cajon Pass "Great Race" & ATSF 3751 (Longer Version)

The first clips are from the "Great Race" (Southern Pacific 4449 and Union Pacific 8444) over Cajon Pass May 8, 1989. This was part of the 50th anniversary celebration for LA's Union Station.
The second ones are from Santa Fe 3751 pulling the Santa Fe Railway Employee Appreciation Special, August 30, 1992 (Los Angeles - Chicago - Los Angeles). This was it's first distance run after restoration. This footage is from Anaheim, Corona and Riverside, then to Cajon.
Gotta love the sounds. And the reaction of people at grade crossings who had no idea...
Keep in mind this was filmed trying to balance a 20-pound shoulder-buster direct-to-tape VHS camera in some slightly precarious positions. Luckily, I knew my way around from years spent chasing.
I wish I had today's technology back then...

Thanks for the footage of the 3751. It holds a special place in my heart. My grandfather worked on the restorationof the engine and would also be the fireman on occasion. Love the steam

Man 4449 and 844 are just perfect together in my opinion. They raced and doubleheaded together, bet soon something else will happen with both the completion of the 4449s inspection, and 844s updates

This is an awesome race! Interesting how this sorta resembles the Thomas & Friends episode Thomas & Bertie's Great Race of Season 1.

So If anyone has "Steam to Los Angeles" from Pentrex, this part of the film is my favorite part. Because of 4449's chimes. I've been looking everywhere hoping someone got a different vantage point. And now, NOW I've found it

I would have been in 6th grade when you recorded the 1989 video. I wish I had known about these steam locomotives running, I would have loved to see that!

Neither did 3751, it wore a D&RGW 5 chime for the longest time

The irony is that if they were to repeat something like this with these two locos, they would most likely be on the opposite tracks. 844 would be on the Palmdale Cutoff, while 4449 would be on the Cajon Sub. Interesting when you think about it.

How horrible was the traffic for you in the 1989 race and going up to Summit? Also what was the traffic like with 3751?

RE: 1989 -- I honestly don't remember, I was more concerned with getting to the next spot ahead of them. I knew my way around pretty well and knew most of the back roads. Plus, if I recall, it was a weekday. RE: 3751 -- most of the shots were local to my work, so again, knowledge of side roads came into play.

From what I hear, the high pitched whistle on the 4449 on the run up Cajon was a CB&Q 5 chime from one of their 2-10-4’s, though I’m not all that sure on the wheel arrangement of the locomotive it first came off of. The five chime that is heard on the 3751 in this video was actually a Santa Fe five chime rather then a Lima five.

Great location at 5” but terrible camera operation. Also it must have been a cheap movie camera with old video tape. To bad you didn’t have a decent 16mm motion picture camera.
@craigisaman4124

I will concede to the camera work, but as I mentioned, this was shot with a shoulder held direct VHS recorder (borrowed from my mother-in-law - all I had was an SLR...) Apparently, Kodak had just started producing consumer-grade hand helds in 1987, so were (probably) hard to come by and exorbitantly expensive.

@justahillbilly7777
@justahillbilly7777 2 года назад
4449 wasn’t wearing its SP 6 chime on that run up Cajon. It was a five chime, presumably of CB&Q 2-10-4 origins, though I’m not all to sure about the wheel arrangement of the locomotive the whistle first came off of.

the bullshit part is that they put 3! diesels. behind the steam loco....with only some public carrages to pull 1 would have been sufficient insurance!
@justahillbilly7777
@justahillbilly7777 2 года назад
Ease up man. The 3751 was going the entire length of the Southern Transcon from LA to Chicago WITHOUT an auxiliary water tender, so preservation era logic tells you that those diesels were there to make the steamer’s fuel and water last for as long as possible so that they’d be able to cover as much ground as possible before having to top the tender supplies back up.
