Today's drone technology makes it easy to collect existing site conditions as a point cloud. Once captured, point clouds provide a wealth of analysis opportunities. In today's session we'll use Civil 3D to extract a material volume from a point cloud representing a large stockpile.

Hi Jeff nice video . I have a doubt. In your opinion for areal surveying , which app is better while considering photorealistic 3D models capability and accuracy ? Pix4D mapper or recap photo and civil 3D together.

Great video. In the uk with other 3rd party software we have a option that runs all those actions after the import of a stockpile. It is called a "stockpile/void" volume. Import,press stockpile/void. The volume appears. This would be great in c3d.

Great video Jeff, can you make a video tutorial for Civil3D calculating volume from 2 surfaces? I have lots of points taken with my GPS before the road construction and my second file is surveying done after the embankment is built. I would like to combine those two surfaces to get a model from which I can read the volume and cut out my profiles. I think lots of people would be thankful for this since your tutorials are so clear and on point! Thanks!

Hello and thanks for your videos, I want to ask you something, how should the computer be configured so that it can work that way? I have an AMD RYZEN 9 3900X processor, GeForce 2060 Super video card, and 64 gb of ram, but my processes are eternal even when my point cloud is smaller than the one you use in your video. greetings and thank you very much

Awesome work Jeff, and much appreciated. My question is regarding Recap Photo projects can no longer be pulled into Recap Pro. I now have to use Recap Photo either thru the online interface or the Recap Photo Desktop to prepare the model for Civil 3D import. Will there be an update to this process, it's much needed. Thanks

Awesome as always Jeff! I have some questions: What drone was used to capture that point cloud and what's the precision of it (m, cm, mm), can we really trust on it? Is it using ground control points to join the images or just the internal drone GPS? Is there any? Thanks a lot.
@JeffBartelsCAD
@JeffBartelsCAD 6 лет назад
Hi Luiz, The data was collected with a DJI Phantom 4 Pro. The Phantom 4 Pro has an integrated 20 megapixel camera that captures lat/long/altitude metadata for each image collected. This metadata was used to stitch the images together. That said, you could also leverage ground control points if you wanted to align the point cloud to other survey collected data. I would encourage you to experiment with the drone hardware you have available to you and compare your results against traditional workflows to determine the best practices for your organization. Thank you so much for your support!

For money saving, you can go with the DJI Phantom 3 Pro. It has the same. The difference is the camera is 12mp + 4K video. I bought mine with a carrying backpack and 4 batteries ($99 a piece). Paid $600 on ebay. Came with different lens filters, and a ton of replacement blades. I also heard the 3 is less than 0.55 lbs., which does not require you to register it. The 4, you do have to register it.

Todd Rogers Thanks Todd! Do you know whats the avarage accuracy/precision of really well done drone surveying compared to more traditional methods? Around 10 cm? Less? From what I know it's better and more precise to use drone together with ground Control points (GPS Post processed) instead just trusting the internal drone GPS to stitch ALL the captured images. Correct me with I'm wrong please. Thanks for your time and info.
@rekids3113
@rekids3113 6 лет назад
To be quite honest, you can get it down to about 5-10cm. I have found that the software used makes a big difference. There are 3 different ones I use. Pix4Dcapture, PrecisionFlight and Drone Harmony. My preferred is the PrecisionFlight. BTW, I use an Android.

Jeff i disagree with the creaying of the base for the stockpile. It may not necessarily be flat. We had a similar case where we needed to measure the cut volume from a near by borrow pit. Turned out that the cut extended farter then the original depression in the ground which couls be seen using goole earth. The best solution is to have a topo survey or a drone based point cloud for the base and then compared with the stockpile.top surface.

Great as always. You stated you were using state plane coordinates of NAD83 Ft. Understood. However, your units are set to Metric from the coords in the left corner. Does this matter? Since this was processed in ReCap Photo in the State Plane CS, I imagine it makes no difference in ReCap, correct? or, is there potential for reprojection?
@JeffBartelsCAD
@JeffBartelsCAD 6 лет назад
Good day sir! Yes, from my experience, if the coordinate system is assigned in ReCap Photo, that coordinate system carries through if you open the cloud in ReCap Pro and export a portion of it as a new .RCS. That said, if the exported .RCS is placed in Civil 3D, I would recommend turning on the BING imagery to verify the cloud came in where you expect. Using the dataset and workflow I showed in the video, the stockpile region exported from ReCap Pro falls in the right location when inserted into Civil 3D.
