Standard Landsat 8 data products provided by the USGS EROS Center consist of quantized and calibrated scaled Digital Numbers (DN) representing multispectral image data acquired by both the Operational Land Imager (OLI) and Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS). The products are delivered in 16-bit unsigned integer format and can be rescaled to the Top Of Atmosphere (TOA) reflectance and/or radiance using radiometric rescaling coefficients provided in the product metadata file (MTL file), as briefly described below. The MTL file also contains the thermal constants needed to convert TIRS data to the top of atmosphere brightness temperature.
While the TIRS bands were designed to allow the use of split-window surface temperature retrieval algorithms, (such as the use of split window techniques for atmospheric correction and retrieval of surface temperature values), it is recommended that users refrain from relying on band 11 data in quantitative analysis of the TIRS data due to the larger calibration uncertainty associated with this band.
Since the launch of Landsat 8 in 2013, thermal energy from outside the normal field of view (stray light) has affected the data collected in TIRS Bands 10 and 11. This varies throughout each scene and depends upon radiance outside the instrument field of view, which users cannot correct in the Landsat Level-1 data product. Band 11 is significantly more contaminated by stray light than Band 10. It is recommended that users refrain from using Band 11 data in quantitative analysis including use of Band 11 in split-wind surface temperature retrieval algorithms. Details about Landsat 8 TIRS stray light can be found in Appendix A of the
Conversion to TOA Radiance
OLI and TIRS band data can be converted to TOA spectral radiance using the radiance rescaling factors provided in the metadata file
Conversion to Top of Atmosphere Brightness Temperature
TIRS band data can be converted from spectral radiance to top of atmosphere brightness temperature using the thermal constants provided in the metadata file
3) Conversion from At-Satellite Temperature to Land Surface Temperature
Now we are ready to convert the At-Satellite Brightness Temperature to Land Surface Temperature, using the following equation.

For those who are looking to find the right sattelite image, use remotepixel. You can download all bandwidths seperately, as well as the metadata. search.remotepixel.ca. The method used here is based on Sobrino & Paolini's paper from 2004 called "Land surface temperature retrieval from LANDSAT TM 5. " I believe.

Thank you to this useful tutorial, I have a question why u used float in calculating NDVI.
@shabanimagawila2643
@shabanimagawila2643 4 года назад
We have to use float because mostly during NDVI calculation we expect to get decimal number as results. Its true that NDVI range from -1 to 1 but is not exactly a whole number, because some place have low vegetation and some high. So it encouraged to use float in order to classify them.

I already calculated the surface temperature using a Landsat 8 imagery through the built-in calibration tool in ENVI. Having computed the statistics for the resultant image, I noticed that the statistics are different between the two thermal bands based on which the temperature map has been created. More particularly, the min, max, mean temperature are quite different. I am wondering on which thermal band I should base my analysis and how these two actually compare to each other?

Thanks for the video. However, I came across one issue I'm hoping you can answer. This video, along with another blog I read, left out "Oi" (the correction value for band 10) in the first equation listed in the USGS article on this whole process. The equation is: TOA = Ml * Qcal + Al - Oi You've left out Oi, and I'm hoping you can explain why, because I can't find that answer elsewhere. Thanks!

If my NDVI doesnt range from 1 to -1 , is it wrong? Im getting between 0.49... and -0.15... . This affects PV and eventually the LST in calculations, any advice is appreciated
@ytsen13
@ytsen13 5 лет назад
It's not wrong, it only gives extremes like that because the map here isn't clipped. If it would be it would also give a minimum of around -0.15 (which is often water), and a maximum closer to 0.6 for trees and such

That should not happen. can you check what is the range of your bands (b5 and b4). they should be positive i.e, 0-10000 only. if they are negative scale them to >0. then run NDVI

What is NDVI means?
@Altobrun
@Altobrun 5 лет назад
NDVI is the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index. It's a value ranging from -1 to 1 based on how "green" vegetation is. Values closer to 1 are more green. Values under 0.2 are not vegetation. It's calculated with the formula NDVI = (NIR-Red)/(NIR+Red).
