@@hockeypsychology I would love to see that! Fox is also an amazing player.. I haven't seen a d man that played like this since the Leetch years, back when I was a kid.. Fox reminds me a lot of Leetch in some ways.. Both Makar and Fox are top notch, elite players...
He Is the true definition of a dman. His instincts and awareness sets him apart from the other dman around the leaugue. I dont even like the avs but ill watch their games anytime.
Agreed. But he is not the true definition of a dman. He’s the best dman in the league, sure. But in my opinion he’s more like a skilled forward put at D. (This is just because in my opinion, his defensive skills isn’t close to his offensive. Plus there are better defensemen better at DEFENCE than he is.)
Great compilation and use of the slow motion. Makar is such a great skater. Elusive and unpredictable with where he's skating, a nightmare to defend against.
Countless hours... If you look at his junior highlights, he was doing this type of stuff then. Some were uncertain if it would translate at the NHL level but obviously he proved them wrong lol
So true. Anytime I look at old clips, I can't believe the lack of pace they played at. Of course i'm wrong because it's all relative, but boy did they look slow & clunky lol.
Players keep getting better and better over the newer eras. If he ends up in the hall of fame, there will be kids trying to be the next Cale Makar and mimic his skating. Now, there are amazing players like Zegras performing the Michigan lacrosse goal.
@@hockeypsychology that's because of the video quality back then. Obviously!! People 50 years ago weren't slower. We're not talking 10000 years here. If that were true. How the hell did Orr or Gretzky have so many speed involving records.
1:12 is astounding. Where does the energy come from when he stops on his left foot to then propel him backwards so quickly. Amazing edge work there. Watch it at .25 speed.
the common denominator with the guys mentioned in the posts is their skating technique. few are over 6 foot tall but their excellence in skating makes them superior. the lower centre of gravity, edge control, and powerful legs are all shared strengths and make it virtually impossible to separate them from the puck, and they make it look effortless.
@@TheNamesSlick mcdavid might be who knows mcdavid had speed to utilize maybe in most situations its more effective so he doesn't use his edges but could still have them
@@gatesgates7788 McDavid has better straight ahead speed but he is not a better all around skater than Makar....Cale might be the best lateral skater I have ever seen.
Three of the greatest defensemen of all time played for Colorado. Ray Bourque, Rob Blake and now Cale Makar. And all three won the cup with The Avalanche.
everyone forgets about adam foote he was the shut down d men in the late 90s to ealie 2000s, ask the red wings what they thought about him, he did the d so blake and bourgue could get the points
Blake wasn't nearly as talented as Makar but he was soooo fun to watch. Those hips checks were just the best. I've never seen anyone hip check like Rob Blake and he would do it all the time. Probably took it's toll on his body.
He is a great player, no question. Not sure about saying he is the best ever like some of the comments. He is quick and crafty but what really makes Makar is his skating, he does these open foot transitions at full speed (I call them duck foots to the kids I coach). You see that more in figure skating. It allows him to keep his shoulders square and it’s impossible for the defender to know which way he is going. It also creates strange angles of attack that opposing players are not used to seeing. If you’ll notice he fools a lot of defenders who simply turn the wrong way. Great player though. Pleasure to watch.
I would say they just use their edges differently. Makar is probably more explosive than Sid but sid did better at getting low and is very hard to knock off the puck. Two different players but both are fantastic at what they do
I don’t know what it’s called, but when he skates with both toes pointed out almost 180 degrees it fakes everyone out. Haven’t seen anyone skate like that.
i dont wanna be that guy but obviously cale has good edgework. and cales only getting better him and mackinnon they play off each other so well but this just shows how crazy sids edgework is compared to star players
He routinely makes moves I would've only thought were possible in a video game...by someone whose been gaming non stop for the last 10 years and knows how to 'cheat' the program.
I'm younger so I never got to see Coffey in action. I'd love to watch him for a full game to see all the little things he does that the highlights never caught.
Barzal is so damn talented as well. It will be interesting to see under new coaching if he starts to flourish more offensively now. I think he falls victim to how good of a skater he is sometimes as he has the habit to hang around the perimeter at times instead of attacking the net.
Makar's edgework is insane. Top 5 in the league for sure. One guy I think who is a prospect and will be in the NHL in a couple years though I think will end up being the best player with the best Edgework is Connor Bedard... Dude's skating is next level.
The NHL has gotten too soft he would have been buried in the 90s. I'm not saying I want the game to get back to that style but a little more toughness would be appreciated.
