Why on earth wasn’t this Oscar-nominated for cinematography? They preferred The Black Hole instead? SMH.

I've always thought The Black Stallion has the best cinematography of all movies. It is #1 in my book! Thank you for your beautiful work!

The Black Stallion is such a great film.

I love how the part where Alec and Black are stranded on the island had no dialogue until the part when they got rescued.

This was the first movie my father took me to see In a theater.

I love this movie! I was a kid when I first saw it. My dad had the VHS of it and I watched over and over. I have continued to watch it at least once a year because it is just a awesome movie.

Intended or not I saw a whole history of the relationship between human art forms and the horse in the island sequences. The shots of the shadows on sand evoked the look of cave drawings of horses. Some of the running and riding echoes Muybridge and the pure hypnotic rhythm of a simple silohette of the running horse recalls the classic zoetrope loops. Perhaps no animal on earth looks quite as good at 24 FPS as a running horse.

The photography lifts this film up among the great movies

The unit went back to Sardinia three times to get extra shots, and the entire film was shot over a three year period. Kelly Reno was 11 when they started and 14 when they finished.

Yeah, I prefer and miss the ways of old Cinema too. Done in-camera. Not that I'm Luddite because I believe a marriage of both special effects and visual effects are best but we have a saying at our company's Divisions especially Imagination Workshop Studio and it goes, "We use technology when it is needed but if not then we don't and opt for imagination, craft and techniques combined from over a century of Cinema History to pull off a shot or sequence."

Has the film been restored? I absolutely love this film, but was heartbroken when I saw it again maybe 7 or 8 yrs ago at the AFI in Silver Spring, MD, as part of a festival celebrating the horse in film. The film's color had degraded quite a bit. I was told they had a hard time finding a good print and that it was badly in need of restoration but seemed unlikely the master could be saved.

I shot a movie with elephants using the same techniques and approach with the crew. You should have mentioned how all of the helicopter and riding shots that happen after the underwater scenes where Kelly mounts the horse, were shot on a beach in Oregon three years later.
