Just discovered her tho I remember the song and heard the sample use... I'm the same age 67 she was when touring again w this... I must learn this but the arrangement from Cadet/Chess records BRINGS IT
Legendary Watts Music Festival in 1972. It was all peace and love back then, dancing and grooving, no one packing heat. A different time, baby! California Soul indeed, baby!
@@MemoGrafix that’s my point there was no handheld phones yet and certainly no phones with cameras so they couldn’t take selfies anyway if they were a thing then people would , it makes no sense to me when people slate young ones for taking pics and having their phones all the time but it isn’t their faults it’s just the time they’ve grown up in and has been invented
@@Emilyxx495 - Yes it is the times younger people are growing up in. I would like that people are not so self-absorbed and having the DumbPhones as the ONLY window to the world. People can talk about hardcore drugs all anyone wants, *_Digital Drugs_* are by far the most addictive for many _(not all)_ people. This is worse than TelLieVision addiction. At times I will not use any digital electronics for several days just to detox My mind from the Digital Pollution, except to answer My phone when some one calls. I rarely go on FaceBook, TikTok & YT Shorts. They make attention-spans equivalent to a mere Goldfish as a few Scientists, Biologists & Psychiatrists have researched & tested.
This was a groundbreaking concert. NO FIGHTING, NO BANGING, just great music from the great Stax Records provided as a gift to the town of Los Angeles. No East Coast/West Coast Rivalry... non of that Rapper crap! Just a great time! It lead to the Funk Festivals with Funkadelic, Parliament, Bootsy's Rubber Band, ConFunkShun, the BarKays, and so many more! with over 100,000 people!! When LA knew how to party on a nationwide level! I miss those days... CALIFORNIA SOUL INDEED!!
I remember borrowing Driver San Francisco from a friend and while in a chase with the cops this song played. This song was the song that got me into 70s and 80s music.
Well dammit I just threw out my back, cramped up my thigh and threw out my elbow not expecting this video would get my old 58 year old body moving and dancing right in my bed seeing those beautiful Watts children brothers and sisters ande mothers and fathers too so proud so fnky perfection i'm gonna be laid up for a day now played tis over and over damn
I CRIED. THIS IS BEAUTIFUL. FUCK. I LOVE BEING BLACK. I LOVE MY AFRICAN HERITAGE. I THANK YOU GOD FOR ALLOWING THIS. I LOVE ALL PEOPLE, BUT I SHO NUFF LOVE ME.
Culture and attitudes drastically changed and not for the better. There is so much that people of different races, cultures could share like this music that is phenom.
I'm a white guy who was only a year old in 1972. I heard about the Watts riots in the 60's but don’t ever recall hearing this time period being a bad time for anyone of any color or nationality. Everyone here just looks so happy and in the right vibe of everything! Everyone may be one race here but good vibes are contegeous. Inside we are all the same people and we should all be loving and respectful of each other. RIP Mrs. Shaw
I can't tell you how refreshing it is to see a mass celebration of music like this. Fast forward 30, 40 years and crowds today are now celebrating Lakers Championships by overturning and/or torching cars and lighting dumpsters on fire. For as bad as things sometimes were back then, it seems they indeed were the good old days compared to what we now have in 2013. Unfortunately.
This was an absolutely amazing video, I feel in love with it. I play this video constantly when im studying. Real smooth and very easy to listen to. Thanks for this gift
The music industry is often more interested in capitalizing on America's musical heritage than celebrating it. Although the two can co-exist, industry executives found it more profitable to co-opt a sound and cross it over to a larger, more affluent audience. I'm sure these artist's could empathize with the frustration of being left out of the American dream or played out in it's pursuit.
2015, what in hell has happen to us, no gangsta-gangsta no shots fired no cosmetic surgery and very little Police presents. Wattstax was during the time when Blacks from every class came for the cosmic vibration. We're has the love gone.. Aw, The Most High help today..
pre crack, pre olde English 800. little did we know while we were dancing and having fun, the devil was in the lab inventing ways to sic the fire hoses and german sheppards and nooses on our asses on the downlow.
chris, I love this piece superimposed on this footage of Watts. Fascinated by diplo's imagery in his visuals for the exact same piece of music, with the disc brake action . Just love everything about this, including the legendary event, and the Ashford and Simpson original. Captures the mood of that time and Wattstax sooooo well. A fleeting moment of cultural transformation, ecstasy, and hope.
To this generation. Look close at this video. No guns ,no violence,no crazy crap. What u see is young an old black American folks having a good time. Take some lessons from the video.
Oh my goodness looks like one heck of a festival and concert...unfortunately I wasn't there because I am almost certain I had too be around thee or four back then❤️♥️💯💢
@Grendelmonster8u Yeah- I chose this version because it synched up so well with the video and it is also a tasteful remix. Marlena is still out there performing live. Last I heard she was bouncing around Europe a bit. I'd buy that for a dollar... and quite a few more...
Depends from person to person. No matter where in this world. Be it from the inside or the outside. Some people look beautiful outside but don't have a beautiful soul (unfortunately). Not all "blacks" are "beautiful", not all "hispanics" are, not all "whites", not all chinese people etc. etc. etc. ;)
A good family friend was dating the lead singer of the Bar Kay’s back then and used to go on tour with them. The stories she tells about that time...smh😂
