Yeah, those temps in the mid 20's a few of the mornings early last week put it to bed. It was not normal to have temps like that this early in the year so it'd likely still have some color to it right now since it warmed back up after those temps. Regardless, it keeping decent color up to Halloween is something I am completely happy with. I was mowing it 2 or 3 days before Halloween.

We had temps in the mid 20's a few of the mornings early last week so that definitely put it to bed. Prior to that it was still holding some decent color for how cool it was getting. It was not normal to have low temps like that this early in the year so it'd likely still have some color to it right now since it warmed back up after those temps. Regardless, it keeping decent color up to Halloween is something I am completely happy with. I was mowing it 2 or 3 days before Halloween. The tall fescue is obviously looking good now due to the time of year but it too is getting close to not really growing much anymore.

Sprigs will be cheaper but obviously there is a longer time before you have a lawn compared to sod. Sprigging has a bit more work up front to get it going and there is always the chance of wash out, especially if your lawn is sloped. If it flat washout won't be too big a problem. There is far less variables that can make a sod job go wrong. In regards to things not being smooth for reel mowing, things don't need to be perfectly smooth to start reel mowing. With either option you can always gradually top dress each season to smooth it out. I hope this helps. Good luck with everything. It's dormant now. It went dormant right after Halloween. If we hadn't had unseasonable cold temps in the low 20's around that time it would have been green well into November.
