I'm scalping and dethatching my dead lawn to convert my fescue to a bermuda lawn. At this point in my renovation, the existing tall fescue has been killed and I am ready to scalp and dethatch to remove as much dead grass as I can. I want my lawn renovation to be as successful as possible so I'm making sure I prep the ground and soil as best as I can. This is the beginning of my journey to convert this part of my lawn to IronCutter Bermuda and I hope you enjoy it with me. This is part of a mini series with several episodes of me documenting this entire process. Leave a Comment, Like, and Subscribe if you like what a show on my channel. Thank you for your support!

I live in St Louis to . The only things I hate about Bermuda is how long it stays green. You will be lucky to get 4 month of green grass. Another thing is your neighbors who has Fescue that will be invaded by Bermuda. Most HOA's like I am in will not allow Bermuda grass. If you have a HOA be sure to check with them or it can be big ordeal. Great video! .
@TheLawnGuardian
@TheLawnGuardian Год назад
Newer hybrid bermudagrasses green up faster and don't go dormant as fast. I've seen ironcutter stay green 5+ months in our area. No problem with the HOA either. Several of my neighbors have zoysia which was installed at the time the house was built 20+ yrs ago and has spread into other neighbors lawns. I grew up with bermuda in TX so I know how aggressive bermuda can be so to help prevent it from spreading as best I can, I'm putting in a landscape bed along the length of the property line with a 10"-12" root barrier in front of that to help keep things at bay. I'm hoping to have the video on that up by this weekend. Stay tuned and thank you for watching.

For sure. From what I have seen from other people planting this in my climate and a bit further north, it surprisingly holds it's color pretty long in the fall and greens up quick in the spring. A good storm will also help with exposing more dirt once the grass is killed off. Back when I did my full reno, I thought I'd need to dethatch again. But after a few good storms and soakings, the remaining dead material was washed away.

Any reason you didn't go with KBG instead of Bermuda?
@TheLawnGuardian

KBG in our area of the midwest would cost even more difficult to maintain and keep alive then tall fescue. Bermuda will thrive with very little input.

If I remember correctly you were battling a really high PH issue. Is this renovation related to that at all? Just curious. Great video.
@TheLawnGuardian
@TheLawnGuardian Год назад
I do still have some high pH but this renovation is unrelated. My pH has continued to drop each season. This year my soil result came back with a pH of 7.5, which is down from 8.3 in 2020. The main reason for this reno is mainly for lowering the cost and inputs. The bermuda will need far less money and overall maintenance than any cool season grass for the area I live in. Thanks for watching and for the support!

No fingicides?!! Really? I have a 20 year old bermudagrass lawn, and I have to begin preventative fingicides in mid May, so Dollar Spot doesn't become an issue throughout the growing season.
@TheLawnGuardian
@TheLawnGuardian Год назад
Bermuda in this area of the transition zone doesn't deal with the same intensity of heat and humidity that it does down south so it doesn't deal with the same disease pressure. It will still get some dollar spot but it will grow right through it and it is hardly noticed so fungicides aren't necessary.

@TheLawnGuardian Год назад
To each their own. These hybrid bermuda's are very soft. I have even maintained common bermuda at a low HOC and it too was soft. Warm season grasses will never feel like a cool season grass but from my experience many people don't like bermuda or other warm season grasses because they haven't seen it when it's been properly maintained.
