In this video I talk about growing in my new lawn from bermuda sprigs. I discuss the grow in process from the time the sprigs were put down all the way to the point that the lawn was completely grown in and went dormant in the fall. Transforming this area that was once tall fescue to this elite cultivar of bermuda was an extremely satisfying experience and I learned a lot from this process.
This cultivar of bermuda is called Iron Cutter Elite Hybrid Bermuda. It has a fine blade, excellent cold tolerance, early spring green-up, and high traffic tolerance.

As someone from the north, i never thought sprigging would come in that fast, man what a difference! Almost time to get that scalp done and some sand leveling done!

It was pretty awesome to see. I'll be doing a scalp here pretty soon. We're not quite out of the frost window here.

Amazing progress! I am so jealous of your minimal weed pressure you encountered during grow in. Can’t wait to see the progress this year!

I live in Creve Coeur and my neighbors Bermuda grass got just about wiped-out last summer, so I went over there and seen that his lawn has Chinch bugs. If you see a lot of brown grass along the sidewalk that is where it will start because the bug like the heat from the sidewalk. If you have a Mail Man that's deliver mail on foot he or she can pick them up from another lawn and deposit them on to your lawn. Once in a while just cut the bottom of a can sticked down to the soil fill it with water and see what is floating. St Louis had a big break out of the bugs and my sister's lawn was one of them too .

Getting ready to call a landscaper to grade and level my yard. I keep going back and forth between Royal TXD seed and Tahoma 31 sprigs. All the forums say that sprigging is easier. Looks awesome.

@TheLawnGuardian I actually just got fiber up and running. They came out with a cable trencher and left a nice little scar across the whole front yard and half the side yard about three weeks ago. Luckily it's already greening up.

I’m trying to completely redo my yard and because of it being on a slope seed isn’t a great option. Would peat moss with a tackifier or it by its self help with holding the soil and sprigs in place? I don’t really have the funds to sod 10k sq ft but sprigs seem do able.

@lawnguardian Looking to do something similar. (I'm out in Ofallon, MO) About how much did the bushels run you? I'm looking to cover 3600 square feet. How many bushels would you recommend?
@TheLawnGuardian
@TheLawnGuardian 2 месяца назад
I paid $3 a bushel and the sod farmer recommended 200 for the 4500 sqft I was covering. I'm not sure what the recommendation would be for 3600sqft. Maybe around 150 - 160 bushels. Not 100% sure though.

Your project has inspired me to undertake sprigging a similarly large area in my back yard. A few questions for you - how often were you fertilizing after the lawn was established (looked like about Week 7), and did you increase the Nitrogen 1000/sqft application rate? Great work, it's been fun tracking your progress.
@TheLawnGuardian
@TheLawnGuardian 3 месяца назад
Once the lawn was established I backed off the fertilizer to about a half pound of N/1000sqft every 4 weeks.

Lawn looks good and came in fast. I’m in the same process. Where did you buy the sprigs from? I live around a few sod farms but they don’t advertise selling sprigs and I was going to just go to the farms and see if they would sell me the scraps from when they harvest the grass.

@TheLawnGuardian
@TheLawnGuardian 6 месяцев назад
You are correct. Most people around the STL area do not maintain bermuda properly. I maintained some common/wild bermuda at my old house in Valley Park, STL and I could also make that look good as well. Not as good as this IronCutter but still dang good for it being common bermuda. You don't necessarily have to mow as low as I am, it can still look good at 1.5" to 2" but it really shouldn't be maintained higher than 2".
