The main difference between Miranda and Call me Kat is that Miranda’s talking to the camera is seamless. It’s so natural that you don’t see any break in the acting. In Call me Kat it cuts off what is going on and it seems awkward. I love both shows, but what worked in Miranda does not work as well in Call Me Kat.

A show that I felt did the best dealing with the breaking of the 4th wall was It’s Garry Shandling’s Show. It was less wink and a nod, and more so obliterate it. It made it feel as if you were watching a live stage play, and it worked very well with Garry’s personality. It’s hard to do, and it could be used as a crutch, but when done right, it can be quite funny. With the breaking of the 4th wall, what’s most important is that the character’s personality shines through and it’s organic. Easier said than done.

@@anettecamou5335 No, the audience was cringing at George's stupidity 30 years ago. It was okay once, but, I can't watch most of the Seinfeld reruns because of him. People don't want the 'sitcom staple', we want originality. That, and intelligence, are why Big Bang is so popular. Big Bang also made us understand and become more empathetic toward the 'nerd'. I don't want to see an intelligent woman play the overused 'shallow buffoon' role when there are far better options. Also, we have all had enough of lying being portrayed as normal behavior. I have crippling social anxiety, and I have therapy for it twice a month. I have friends, both nearby and online. I work from home every day (even before covid). I wear jeans and hoodies when I go out, and I wear pajamas at home so I'm always comfy. I speak out loud to no one ALL THE TIME. I talk to my cats and bunny too, but usually it's either just to the silence or to myself. And I'm happy. Sure, I'm lonely sometimes, but mostly I AM HAPPY. I LOVE this show. If someone doesn't like it, or if it doesn't resonate with them...they don't have to watch it. I love the show! Part of its appeal is that the character does dress and “ look” like most of us regular people. We don’t run around at home and sometimes work, in heels or dressed to the nines with hair and makeup perfected looking like a plastic surgery fake. We love our parents but they think we should live the life they expect sometimes, we have friends who are different but like our life in the moment. I’m so glad to see you back on tv and fingers crossed the show gets an actual chance to acquire an audience.

It's always difficult adapting a UK series for a US audience, especially one that relies primarily on the very particular talents of the lead actor. "Miranda" also had the advantage of having a long development, from the Edinburgh Fringe to BBC radio, before coming to TV. As a result not only was there a known winning concept but the actors had lived in their characters for a while before coming to the screen, making their relationships as old friends and family easy on day one of filming. All that aside, the main criticism I have is that there is too much narrative exposition. There's an old playwright's dictum: never say what you can show. Kat doesn't have to tell us she has social anxiety, that should be obvious from her actions. She doesn't have to tell us her mom wants to set her up, when she waltzes into the cafe singing "Matchmaker, Matchmaker." Over-explaining suggests the writers think the audience needs to be spoon fed the plot. Have a bit more faith in your audience's intelligence.

isn't that, 'what I like to call' the concept of the show!
@ElliotNesterman
@ElliotNesterman 3 года назад
@@bits68 Breaking the fourth wall for comic or dramatic effect, or to soliloquize, is one thing, but breaking the fourth wall to to explain things which do not need explanation, as they become obvious from the actions of the characters, is redundant at best. It's more engaging for the audience if they discover rather than being told.

I don’t know of one show (apart from maybe ‘The Ropers’), that has done well transatlantic, I think that even though we may speak the same language, the ‘subtleness’ of British English and ‘nuances’ are such that perhaps there is not a full understanding abroad. We watch American shows, but very few are ‘reworked’ to a British cast.
@ElliotNesterman
@ElliotNesterman 3 года назад
@@adelesteele2008 We've had a few UK shows that became hits when reworked for the US audience. "Till Death Do Us Part" became "All in the Family," "Steptoe and Son" became "Sanford and Son," both developed by Norman Lear who is rather a genius producer of comedies. "Man About the House" became "Three's Company," with development help from the same crew Lear had used for "All in the Family." And, of course, most recently there is "The Office." The US version of "House of Cards" was a big hit, until Kevin Spacey's awful behavior put the kibosh on that.

I think the last one the country is too big :) I mean in the UK there might be a week where they go to Wales and Scotland in the same week, it would be difficult (logistically) to go 'coast to coast' in the states!

Remember the days when if someone didn’t like something they just didn’t watch it, read it, look at it or whatever and they ignored it and moved on with life because they knew it wasn’t for them? Instead now a days people just can’t do that. They want to complain and be outraged even over absolute ridiculous things. This nonsense has to stop. Social media has been the downfall of our society. While there have been positives of course there has been way more negative that have destroyed our way of life. There’s a reason not everyone needs a platform yet everyone has one and people don’t know how to weed out the noise. And now companies and others are doing what they can pacify the people they shouldn’t be. Most people who scream the loudest are not the ones you want to bend to. We need to realize that quickly.

TV/movies always portray women with cats as objects of pity, but compassion is cool. After losing my only baby, I was in and out of a deep depression for several years. I recently rescued a kitten. The ER vet said she would not live for more than a few hours. So the least corrupt countries who held their citizens hostage for the shortest amount of time had the lowest Boogey Virus rates. Of course.... because people don’t get sick from germs, they get sick from being scared and upset about something that happened in their lives. Enter the worldwide FEAR CAMPAIGN. The Germ Theory was never actually proven to be 100% accurate, yet the trillion dollar medical industry is entirely based on that theory. What's the CAUSE of death in people with this "virus"? Does their brain explode? Does their heart stop beating? The CAUSE of death is still pneumonia. Pneumonia is not something you can "catch". It's a biological result of being "scared to death" of something which is exactly what the media has done to people dumb enough to watch them. You've heard the term "Worried sick". That's because your BRAIN causes you to become sick due to the stress it is perceiving! Why do you think young kids aren't getting the Boogey Virus? Because they aren't sitting in front of the news being scared to death because they're too young to understand a Fear Campaign. These pathetic "experts" just make shit it up to explain their narrative as they go. First they tell you kids bring home every illness from school because they're not "exposed" to enough things, then they say somehow they're immune to a Boogey Virus? Does anyone have common sense?! You don't show the symptoms of "disease" until you stop being panicked and afraid. These symptoms usually show up 1-2 weeks after you've relaxed and resolved the upsetting event. There's no such thing that some diseases you can "catch", but not all. It's not that complex! If you can't "catch" cancer, diabetes, MS, arthritis, etc., from other people, then you can't "catch" colds, flu and Boogey Viruses. So governments around the world are CAUSING fear frights in everyone based on an unproven THEORY by one man, Louis Pastaur, who redacted his claim of the germ theory on his death bed, yet no one listened. So of course, when everyone is allowed to escape the hostage situation the governments have put their people into, and they start relaxing about the Boogey Virus, that's not in any way transmissible, they will begin their healing phase (get sick), and believe they then have it, and more panic will ensue as well as martial law. The longer people allow this government to hold them hostage in their homes, the more severe the "sickness" will be. Can anyone put 2 and 2 together to figure out what I'm saying?? Western Medicine is pure fraud, and people's lives are destroyed because of it. There's no critical thinking anymore. People think they're educated because they've memorized the lies they've been told for 100 years.

I LOVE your show! I too am a 39 year old single childless woman who LOVE cats. I'm also an Actor. When Kat broke the 4th wall I was like *GASP!!* BRILLIANT!! Your show is so funny and on point for this type of woman. We must be a rare breed for anyone to criticize how this show is presented. My favorite part is everyone popping out at the end to wave to the audience. I'm a Stage Actor (currently creating video content on youtube) and I loved you bringing that theatre element into a tv series. It's so inspiring!

I particularly liked when you interacted with the camera. That was a different approach. No one should judge a comedy by the first couple episodes. It takes a little while for everyone's timing to click together. I laughed out loud several times. We need that nowadays. Thank you.

I binge watched “call me Kat” It is cute and hope it will be a long running show. Watched Miranda years past and loved it. Glad that it’s a departure but also keeping the quirky personality. Keep on keeping’ on

as a newly 40 year old single human who presents as female with an average size body this show is so representative of me - thank you for doing it. i grew up watching blossom and seeing so much of myself in her and it's so special for me to again see a human who looks and acts and lives like me. thank you!!

So excited that this show finally premiered. As a crazy cat lady from KY, who is very real - it sure hit home. So fun! Thanks!

Regarding the 4th wall: I liked that about Blossom, even though it was her video diary, it was a way that the fourth wall was broken in an innovative way. I see a lot of similarities between the two shows. And I'm here for it.

I saw the same similarities in both shows. I'm very excited about Call Me Kat for that reason. I LOVED Blossom.

I'm a background actor on this show. It's a great show, with an amazing and talented cast and crew. This is one of the few shows that I've worked on that treats their extras like they are part of the team and as human beings should be treated. Trust me, I have horror stories. LOL. The cast chemistry in real life is genuine, they are supportive of one another! Mayim is the most down to earth celebrity that I've encountered. She is extremely talented. Jordan is a hilarious sweetheart, Kyla Pratt is beautiful, sassy, and funny. Julian reminds me of Kevin Hart. And, Oh, Cheyenne, his voice is simply amazing.

I can't believe breaking the 4th wall is a criticism when Deadpool and The Office have such cult followings.

The Office is a mockumentary, it’s not fourth wall-breaking

it wasn’t necessarily that for me, but it seemed to be too frequent and not at times that were necessary. Like a simple eye roll to the audience, a smirk etc would have been enough for me. But lots of time a first episode isn’t the best and this show has promise. I will definitely tune in again. Im sure many people will love this show, such as those who liked Two Broke Girls (which did great and I didn’t like that one either). Some people totally love the overacting types of shows like TBG. This too me felt like that type of show so far.

It's a cop-op. She's deflecting from all the critics who said the show is awful. The 4th wall is normal for tv shows. Nice try, mayim!

I don’t like either of those and for that reason. Breaking the fourth wall is simply unacceptable.

I like when they "break the 4th wall." It makes me feel like I'm part of the show. I like Kat. She reminds me of me. I'm currently binge watching it on Hulu. And I'm hoping it picks up season 2 when it's made. (I have a job and can't catch it on network television.) I love you, Mayim. Forget the naysayers, stay true to yourself. 💖 Nothing but love. 👍👍

Mayim and EVERYONE involved in Call Me Kat: Thank you for the joyful escapes into the worlds you create. As an "older" teacher who returned to full time teaching in the midst of a pandemic, the levity and laughter you share is what's getting me through each week. Much gratitude for all you do!!!!!
